CHAPTER 6: What Happens in the Morning

Elara’s POV

Sleep never came.

I spent the entire night moving between the bathroom and the bed, too afraid to close my eyes for more than a few second, afraid that someone was watching me. Every time I closed my eyes, the message flashed behind my eyelids like it had carved itself there.

I know what you did last night. I have photos. Meet me at the café at noon. Come alone.

I must have read it twenty times. Maybe fifty. Enough that the words started to los

Elara's povThis was war and I was done fighting.Elara couldn't sleep well, she kept on staring at the photo in her phone screen—quiet but she feels heavy inside herShe sighed deeply —--She began questioning herself.Who could have sent this message to meThe room felt colder and tensed what does this unknown person actually want. She was thinking about Julien and the way he showed her care feels extremely different. She felt safe with Julien more than her mother or anyone, for the first time in her life she felt alive and treated like a queen by a man without her showing any effort. Then an unknown message from a stranger ruined everything completely. She remembers Bryan's actions and the way he turned my mother against me to humiliate me publicly was extreme. She murmured; No I can't continue to live under Bryan's pretentious and funny act anymore—- I can't be his puppet anymore it all ends after the divorce —-She suddenly paused and thought carefully she made a hasty decision an

Elara's POVI took a cab home. Not because my mother asked me to. Not because Bryan expected it. I took it because I needed my documents, my clothes, and the things that were mine before any of this started. I had a lawyer to prepare for and I wasn't going to do it from a hotel room with nothing but the clothes on my back. The cab driver didn't try to make conversation. I was grateful for that.I watched the city slide past the window and tried to organize my thoughts into something useful. Everything else, the blackmail message sitting unanswered on my phone, my mother's texts I still hadn't opened, the way Julien had looked at me in that café doorway, all of it could wait until I had what I needed. A divorce. One thing at a time. The house looked the same.I don't know what I expected. For it to look as broken as I felt, maybe. For something on the outside to reflect what had happened inside the marriage. But it was just a house. Same painted door. Same potted plant I had been keepi

  • MY CHEATING HUSBAND'S VALENTINE SURPRISE.   Chapter 7

Elara's POVThe silence in the café lasted exactly three seconds. Then everything came back at once. The clinking of cups. The low murmur of other people's conversations. The soft background music that had no business playing right now.My cheek was on fire.I didn't raise my hand to touch it. I didn't cry. I didn't look at the people around us who had gone still, caught between looking away and not being able to.I just stood there and breathed. My mother's face was twisted with something between anger and righteousness, the particular expression she wore whenever she believed she was doing something necessary. She had worn it the day she told me my father's accident was my fault. She wore it the day she told me I should be grateful any man wanted me at all.She had worn it my whole life.Bryan stood slightly behind her. His facial expression was in concern mode, I'm sure it was for his public image. He was watching me the way he always watched me when something happened. Calculating

Enough that the words started to lose shape while the meaning behind them only grew sharper.By dawn, the bathroom light made me look ghostly and pale. My eyes were swollen from exhaustion, too wide and too awake, like my body had decided danger was near and refused to let me forget it.I gripped the edge of the bathroom sink and stared at my reflection in the mirror.Someone knew. Not just about Bryan cheating. Not just about the divorce that was already forming in my mind.Someone knew about Julien.About the way I had fallen ap

“Real Love Doesn't Hurt”Elara's POVI didn't sleep. I lay in bed replaying the confrontation with Bryan, searching for regret and finding none. That scares me. Five years should hurt more. The absence of pain feels like its own kind of loss.At 2 a.m, I give up and go to the balcony. The city never sleeps here. Lights twinkle like earthbound stars, and somewhere below, people are living lives that weren't falling apart.A soft knock pulls me from my thoughts.I open the door. Julien stands there in sweatpants and a T-shirt, hair messy, looking like he couldn't sleep either."I saw your light on," he said. "Couldn't sleep?""Not really. You?""Same. Want company?"I stepped aside. He follows me to the balcony, and we stand side by side, watching the city breathe."Can I ask you something?" I said after a while."Always.""Why are you so gentle? With me and with everything."He was silent for a long while. "My ex-wife used to say I was too soft. And being too soft is a weakness. That I

“Unlearning Love”Elara's POV"I have a tour booked at ten," Julien says, stirring sugar into his coffee. "Some architecture walks through the old district. Want to come?"I should say no. I should keep my distance, process what happened last night like a rational adult. Instead, I heard myself say, "Sure."His face lights up but not in the performative way Bryan does when he gets what he wants. Just sincere pleasure."Great. Fair warning, I might bore you with facts about flying buttresses and Gothic arches.""I teach literature. I can bore you right back with symbolism."We finished breakfast and headed out into the city. The morning air was crisp, clean, washing away the stale hotel smell. Julien walked beside me, hands in his pockets, not trying to hold mine or guide me or own the space between us."So about last night," he started. My stomach drops. Here it comes. The regret. The awkwardness."I don't want you to feel like I took advantage. You were vulnerable and I should have.
