THE DEAD MAN WALKS IN

Alessia called Julian four times before nine in the morning.

The first two calls rang out. The third went straight to voicemail. On the fourth, a clipped assistant's voice informed her that Mr. Sinclair was unavailable and unable to say when he might return calls, and something in the careful neutrality of that sentence made the back of Alessia's neck go cold.

She tried Dr. Rowan next — the physician who had signed off on the Sinclair family's arrangements after the explosion, whose name she still remembered from a stack of condolence paperwork five years old. His office told her he was traveling. No further information available.

She sat at her desk with her phone in her hand and the vanished message still burning behind her eyes. *Your husband wasn't on that plane.* Five years of certainty, and in less than a day it had turned to sand between her fingers, and no one — not one single person who might actually know something — would answer her calls.

She told herself it was nothing. A cruel prank, maybe, or worse, some stranger who'd found her file, her name, her tragedy, and decided to make sport of it. She told herself this while getting dressed for the board meeting she couldn't reschedule, while fixing her hair in the mirror with hands that wouldn't quite stop trembling, while rehearsing, uselessly, the version of herself who would walk into that room today and be nothing but competent, nothing but composed, nothing but the woman the world had built out of the wreckage of five years ago.

The boardroom was full by the time she arrived — twelve members of the Bellamy Atelier board, two representatives from the client securing the largest commission in the firm's history, and Rafael at her right hand, already deep in conversation with the head of the client's legal team.

"We're finalizing phase two," Sienna murmured beside her, sliding a folder across the table. "This is the biggest signing we've ever had. Try to look like you slept."

Alessia managed something close to a smile and opened the folder, forcing her attention onto numbers and timelines, onto the one language that had never once betrayed her.

She almost managed it.

The doors at the far end of the room opened without a knock, without an assistant announcing anyone, without any of the small courtesies that governed every other interruption in this building.

Every head at the table turned. Twelve board members rose to their feet on some instinct older than protocol, some reflex toward the kind of presence that didn't need an introduction.

Alessia didn't stand.

She couldn't. Her body had gone rigid in her chair, every part of her locked around a single impossible thought, because she knew that outline in the doorway. She had memorized it across a decade of doorways just like this one, had turned toward it a thousand times over a thousand dinners and mornings and ordinary unremarkable days that she would have given anything to have back.

Older. Harder — something in the set of his jaw that hadn't been there before, some new permanence to how still he held himself. Dangerous in a way she couldn't have named five years ago, because five years ago she hadn't understood danger was a shape a person could grow into rather than be born with.

The watch on his wrist caught the light. She recognized it immediately — the same one he'd worn the night she signed the papers, the same one that had supposedly gone down with him somewhere in the Atlantic.

Her lungs had stopped taking instructions from the rest of her.

He didn't look at the board. He didn't look at the client's legal team frozen mid-sentence, or at Sienna, who had gone white beside her, or at Rafael, whose hand had found the edge of the table like he needed something solid to hold onto.

He looked at her. Only her. As though the twelve other people in the room were furniture he'd already accounted for and dismissed.

"Alessia."

Her name, in his voice, after five years of silence, undid something in her chest she'd spent half a decade carefully welding shut.

She rose from her chair without deciding to, some part of her still convinced that standing might prove this was real, might prove her own legs still worked, might prove she hadn't simply lost her mind somewhere between the vanished message and this room.

"You're dead," she whispered. It wasn't a question. It was the only sentence her body had left in it.

Nikolia held her gaze, and for one unguarded moment something moved behind his eyes that looked almost like grief, almost like five years' worth of things he had no right to say to her in a room full of witnesses.

"I know," he said.

  • MY EX-HUSBAND IS ALIVE AND WANTS ME BACK    FIVE YEARS OF SILENCE

Alessia's private office had never felt small before. It felt small now, with Nikolia standing in it, filling up space that used to belong entirely to her.She closed the door behind them and turned the lock without thinking about it, some old instinct from a marriage that no longer existed. "Talk," she said. "You wanted alone. You have alone.""Alessia—""Five years." She crossed the room, put the desk between them like a wall she needed. "Five years, Nikolia. I buried you. Do you understand that? I stood in a room with your father and your sister and a bag with your ring in it because they couldn't find enough of you to bring home.""I know.""You know." Her laugh came out jagged. "You know. That's it? That's what you have?""I have more than that. I just can't give you all of it here.""We're alone. You made everyone leave. What exactly are you still protecting me from?"Nikolia was quiet for a moment, and she watched him choose his next words with the same care she remembered from

  • MY EX-HUSBAND IS ALIVE AND WANTS ME BACK    IMPOSSIBLE

For a long moment, nobody in the room moved. Then everyone did, all at once, a dozen voices breaking over each other like a dam giving way."Is this a joke?" one of the client's lawyers demanded, half-rising from his chair. "Someone tell me this is a joke.""Mr. Sinclair." The head of the Bellamy Atelier board, a silver-haired man named Preston, was on his feet, staring at Nikolia like he expected him to dissolve. "You're — the reports said—""I'm aware of what the reports said." Nikolia's voice was calm, even, entirely unbothered by the chaos he'd just detonated. He hadn't looked away from Alessia once. "I'd like a few minutes with my wife.""Your wife?" Sienna was on her feet now too, color rushing back into her face in the shape of pure fury. "You don't get to walk in here after five years and call her that.""Ex-wife," Nikolia corrected, finally glancing at her. "My apologies.""Your apologies." Sienna laughed, short and disbelieving. "Do you understand what you're standing in the

  • MY EX-HUSBAND IS ALIVE AND WANTS ME BACK    THE WOMAN HE LEFT BEHIND

The lights above the stage were hot enough to sting, and millions of people were watching, but Alessia's hands were perfectly steady as she pulled the cover off her model. The International Design Summit didn't usually feature a woman under thirty on its final panel. It had taken Bellamy Atelier four years to earn a seat at this table, and Alessia had learned early that earning it once wasn't the same as keeping it. Beside her, Henrik Voss — sixty-two years old, three continents' worth of skyline behind his name — had already delivered his pitch with the easy confidence of a man who assumed the outcome before the judges spoke."An interesting submission," he'd said of hers, loud enough for the front row to hear, before her own presentation had even begun. "Ambitious, for someone so early in her career."Alessia had smiled and said nothing, because she'd learned that the best answer to condescension was always the work itself. She walked the panel through the tower now — a residential-

The room they took her to didn't look like a morgue. It looked like a conference room that had been apologized into something softer — low lighting, a box of tissues placed too deliberately in the center of the table, a woman in a gray blazer whose entire job, apparently, was to say *I'm so sorry* in a voice trained not to break. There was no body to identify. They told her that first, gently, as though it might soften what came after. The explosion had been catastrophic enough that recovery efforts had turned up fragments, personal effects, a signet ring they were fairly certain belonged to him. That was what confirmation looked like now. A ring in a plastic bag.Alessia sat through all of it without crying. She had done her crying already, in a parking lot, on the pavement, before the phone had even finished dying in her hand. What was left now didn't feel like grief so much as a terrible, hollow stillness, the kind that came after a body had spent everything it had.Julian sat two

  • MY EX-HUSBAND IS ALIVE AND WANTS ME BACK    TWO HEARTBEATS

Alessia hadn't slept. She'd spent the night in the guest room of the house that no longer felt like hers, staring at the ceiling, replaying a single sentence on a loop. *It doesn't matter anymore.* By morning she still had no idea what to do with those words, so she did the only thing left on her list. She went back to the specialist. The waiting room felt smaller this time. Colder. She sat with her hands folded in her lap the way she had the day before, and when the nurse finally called her name, she stood on legs that didn't quite feel like her own.Dr. Whitfield came in holding a folder, and something about his face was different from yesterday. Less careful. Almost gentle in a different way."Mrs. Sinclair." He sat across from her. "I have your results."Alessia braced herself the way she'd learned to over five years of appointments like this one — expecting nothing, hoping anyway, hating herself a little for the hoping."You're pregnant."The words didn't land right away. They ho
