The Threat

The sound of glass shattering upstairs didn’t sound real.

It sounded like it did in movies. That slow, sharp crash that makes your whole body go cold before your brain catches up.

Then came the yelling.

“Perimeter breach!”

“Second floor, east wing!”

“Get her out!”

Ethan was already moving. He grabbed my arm and pulled me under the dining table.

“Stay down,” he said. His voice was calm.

My heart was in my throat. The note was still on the floor. “I’m everywhere.”

David.

It had to be David.

“How did he get in?” I whispered. “You said this place was secure.”

“It is,” Ethan said. He had his phone out, talking to security. “They’re sweeping the house now. He’s not getting to you.”

Footsteps above us. Heavy. Running.

More glass.

A shout.

Then a gunshot.

I flinched.

Ethan covered me with his body. “It’s fine. It’s security. They’re just—”

Another crash. This time from down the hall.

The kitchen door flew open.

Not David.

Two guards. Guns drawn.

“Mr. Blackwood, we need to move her to the safe room. Now.”

Ethan didn’t argue. He pulled me up. “Come on.”

The safe room was behind a bookshelf in his office. Steel door. No windows. One bed, one bathroom, a monitor showing every camera in the house.

We sat on the floor. Waiting.

For ten minutes. Twenty.

I couldn’t stop shaking.

“They have him,” Ethan said finally. He was watching the monitor. “Tased him in the east hallway. He’s down.”

I let out a breath I didn’t know I was holding.

On screen, security dragged a man in black out of the house. Hood over his head. Hands cuffed.

Not David.

A stranger.

Young. Maybe 22. Scared.

Ethan’s jaw tightened. “Who the hell is that?”

One of the guards came on the comm. “Sir, the kid says Mr. Blackham paid him $5k to break in and leave a note. Said he didn’t know anything else.”

Paid someone.

David wasn’t even here.

He sent a kid to do it.

The cowardice of it made me sick.

Ethan stood. “I’m calling the police. And this time around , I’m filing a restraining order tonight.”

I nodded. But I didn’t feel better.

Because if David could pay a stranger to break into Ethan Blackwood’s estate...

What couldn’t he do?

We didn’t sleep.

At 6 AM the lawyers came. Papers everywhere. Restraining order. Police report. Charges for trespassing, harassment, breaking and entering.

David’s lawyer called within the hour.

“Mr. Blackham denies any involvement,” the lawyer said over speaker. “The young man was a disgruntled former employee. My client has no idea what he’s talking about.”

“Disgruntled employee?” Ethan said. “He was paid to break into my home.”

“We’ll see what the court says,” the lawyer said. Then hung up.

By noon, it was on the news.

“BLACKWOOD CEO TARGETED IN HOME INVASION”

“IS SARAH MILLER IN DANGER?”

They still used my picture from the launch. Crying.

Comments were already filling up:

“She brought this on herself.”

“David must be desperate.”

“She’s playing victim again.”

I turned the TV off.

Ms. Reyes came in with coffee. “You need to eat.”

“I’m not hungry,” I said.

“You have to be,” she said. “Because in 48 hours we’re doing the interview.”

I looked up. “What interview?”

“Vogue,” she said. “We booked it last week. About S.M. Collections. About you. We can’t cancel. If we do, we look guilty. Like we’re hiding.”

Ethan was shaking his head. “It’s not safe.”

“It’s the safest thing we can do,” Ms. Reyes said. “We control the narrative. Sarah tells her story. On camera. Before David does.”

I stared at my hands.

“I don’t want to cry on TV again,” I whispered.

“You won’t,” Ms. Reyes said. “You’re not that girl anymore.”

The next 48 hours were a blur.

Lawyers. Security meetings. Fitting for the interview.

They put me in white. Simple. Clean. No jewelry except my mom’s watch.

“To show you’re starting over,” the stylist said.

I hated it. I felt like a ghost.

The interview was in a studio downtown. Closed set. No audience. Just me, the host, three cameras, and Ethan in the corner watching like a hawk.

The host was a woman named Lila. She’d done this for 20 years.

“We’ll start soft,” she said. “The brand. Then we’ll get into... the harder stuff. You can stop anytime.”

I nodded.

The lights came on.

“Welcome to Vogue Tonight,” Lila said to the camera. “Tonight we sit down with Sarah Miller, the designer behind S.M. Collections, and the woman at the center of one of the city’s biggest scandals.”

My mouth went dry.

“First, Sarah. The clothes are stunning. What inspired you?”

I talked about my mom. About surviving. About women who needed armor.

It was easy.

Then Lila leaned forward.

“Sarah. Let’s talk about David Blackham.”

Here we go.

“The video he released. The claims he made. What’s your response?”

I’d practiced this. 100 times.

“The video was taken in my home without my consent,” I said. “It was a private moment after I was assaulted. Mr. Blackham has been harassing me for weeks. He broke into my home two nights ago.”

“Assaulted?” Lila said. “Can you elaborate?”

My chest got tight.

Ethan shifted in his seat.

I looked at the camera.

“On my wedding day, David Blackham stabbed me,” I said. “And left me to die.”

Everywhere went Silence.

Even the cameramen stopped moving.

Lila blinked. “Sarah. That’s a very serious accusation.”

“I have the hospital records,” I said. “I have the police report from 2023 that was buried. And I’m going to get justice.”

The interview went on for 20 more minutes.

By the time we left, my voice was hoarse and my face hurt from not crying.

Ethan drove me home.

“You did good,” he said.

“Did l?” I said.

My phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

I almost didn’t open it.

I did.

It was a video.

15 seconds.

Me. In a hospital bed. 2023.

Unconscious. Tubes in my nose.

And a voice in the background. Ethan's voice.

“Make sure no one sees this. Pay them. Bury it.””

Then the video cut.

And a text came through right after:

You want to talk about 2023 on TV?

Let’s talk.

Tonight.

Come alone.

Or I release the rest.

The full surgery.

The part where you almost died.

Your choice.

-D

My hands started shaking.

Ethan saw my face. “What is it?”

I showed him.

He went still. “We’re going to the police.”

“They won’t do anything,” I said. “He’ll just say it’s fake. And by the time they check, everyone will have seen it.”

“Then what?” Ethan said.

I looked at the address at the bottom of the text.

An old warehouse. By the docks.

The place where we had our first date.

“He wants to meet,” I said. “Alone.”

“No,” Ethan said immediately. “Absolutely not.”

“He’ll release it,” I said. “The whole thing. And then no one will hire me. No one will believe me. S.M. Collections dies before it starts.”

“So we let him win?” Ethan said.

“No,” I said. “We beat him.”

“How?”

I took a breath.

“We go. But not alone.”

11 PM.

The warehouse smelled like rust.

Ethan was outside with two guards. In the car. Listening on a wire.

“I’m right here,” he’d said before I went in. “If anything happens, I’m coming in. I don’t care what you said.”

I believed him.

The door creaked open.

David was inside. Alone.

No suit. Jeans and a hoodie. Hands in pockets.

Like he was waiting for a friend.

“Sarah,” he said. Smiling. “You came.”

“Don’t,” I said. “Don’t say my name like that.”

He held up his phone. “I have 4 more videos. Want to see them?”

“What do you want, David?”

“I want you to stop,” he said. “Stop the interviews. Stop the brand. Stop Ethan. Come home.”

“I don’t have a home with you,” I said.

“You do,” David said. “You just don’t remember. 2023. You begged me to stay. You said you couldn’t live without me.”

“That’s a lie.”

“Is it?” He hit play on his phone.

My voice. Weak. From the hospital.

“Don’t leave me, David. Please.”

I stumbled back.

He edited it. He had to .

“See?” David said. “You love me. You just forgot because of the accident.”

“There was no accident,” I said. “You stabbed me.”

David’s smile dropped.

“Don’t say that,” he said. Quietly.

“It’s true.”

“Don’t you dare,” he said. Louder.

“You’re sick,” I said. “You need help.”

He threw the phone. It hit the wall and shattered.

“I gave you everything!” he shouted. “My name. My money. My family. And you threw it away for him? For a contract?”

“It was never a contract to me,” I said. “It was survival.”

David laughed. But it was wrong. Broken.

“Survival,” he said. “You want to talk survival? Let’s talk.”

He reached into his hoodie.

And pulled out a knife.

Not a big one. A small one. Like the one from our kitchen.

The same kind he used before.

My blood went cold.

“David, put it down,” I said. My voice was steady. Somehow.

“Or what?” he said. “You’ll tell Ethan? He’s not here. No one’s here.”

“You’re wrong,” I said.

The warehouse door slammed open.

Ethan.

Gun in his hand. Pointed at David.

“Drop it,” Ethan said.

David looked at the knife. Then at me. Then at Ethan.

And he smiled.

“You’re too late,” David said.

He lifted the knife. Not at me.

At himself.

And pressed it to his own arm.

Blood welled up.

“Now it’s assault,” David said. “Now you’ll both go to jail. And I’ll be the victim.”

The sirens started outside.

Someone had called them.

David dropped the knife. Fell to his knees.

“Help me,” he whispered. “She attacked me.”

Ethan lowered the gun.

And I realized.

This was it.

The trap.

00:04:58. The red numbers burned into my eyes. The cathedral had turned into hell in 10 seconds. Screams. Chair falling .A baby crying somewhere in the back. The priest dropped the bible, clutching his chest like he was having a heart attack. And through it all, cameras. Dozens of them. Live-streaming the moment “the broken wife” chose between her husband and her lover. In all these, David didn't move an inch. His hand was still locked around mine. The whole building was surrounded by the FBI. And he was smiling at me. Like this was exactly what he wanted. “Get your hands off her,” an FBI agent yelled, shoving between us with a gun pointing at David.David raised his cuffed hands in surrender, but he didn’t let go of my fingers right away. He squeezed it twice. “5 minutes, Sarah. That's all you have to save him." A code. Our old code. " I’m here. I’m not leaving you.”The same squeeze he gave me on our first wedding day. I wanted to vomit. David leaned in with his lips a

SARAH'S POVThe TV kept looping it. *DAVID BLACKHAM ESCAPES FROM PRISON. CONSIDERED ARMED AND DANGEROUS.*Ethan was already shouting into his phone. “I want every exit sealed. Now.”My hands wouldn’t stop shaking, because 30 seconds ago my phone buzzed showing a photo. Ethan. Asleep in his own bed, bare chest, mouth open. And in the doorway behind him, a shadow of a man watching.“He was here,” I whispered. “Last night. While we were kissing downstairs.”Ethan threw his phone. “Call security!”But it was too late. The front door buzzer went off. Not the building. The penthouse door. The door bell rang. All of us froze. Ethan pulled a gun from his drawer, the two security guards drew theirs too.“Who is it?” Ethan yelled toward the door.A voice muffled through the wood sounding calm and familiar. “Delivery for Ms. Miller.”It wasn’t a delivery. Ethan motioned to the guard. The guard looked through the peephole. Then he shook his head. “No one there.”Ethan opened the door anyw

The photo wasn’t me. But it looked like me. Same coat. Same hair. Same slump on the courthouse steps. Except my eyes were closed. And there was blood on my shirt. “BREAKING: SARAH MILLER COLLAPSES OUTSIDE COURTHOUSE. RUSHED TO HOSPITAL. PREGNANCY COMPLICATIONS SUSPECTED.”The comments were already there. “See? She’s hiding it.”“Poor babies.” “David deserves to know.” I was sitting in Ethan’s car. Alive. Breathing. 4 hours from the hearing. And the whole internet thought I was in the ER losing twins. “Who took that?” Ethan said. His voice was low and Angered.“David,” I said. “Has to be. No one else benefits.”Ethan threw the phone in the backseat. “We’re going in early. We’re going to the judge’s chambers. Now.”“Will that help?” I asked. “It’ll help if we do it before they arrest you for faking a collapse,” Ethan said. I laughed like a sob. Then we drove. People were looking at their phones and then at me. Whispering. When we got to the courthouse, reporters were already

I stared at the text until the words stopped making sense. “48 hours, Sarah. Come to the hearing and admit it’s mine. Or I release the sonogram of the twins.”Twins. David was in prison. In cuffs. And he was still doing this. Ethan’s arms were still around me from five seconds. I pulled back. “I need air,” I said. “Sarah—” “I need air.” I walked to the window of his penthouse. 40 floors up, the night looked like a field of stars. None of them felt like mine. My phone buzzed again. Ms. Reyes. Then the board. Then a reporter. Then my dad’s old lawyer. I silenced all of it. Ethan came up behind me but didn’t touch me. “We’ll fight it,” he said. “The sonogram is fake. We can prove it.”“How?” I said. My voice sounded flat. Even to me. “He used my name. My insurance. A real hospital. Someone on the inside took his money and now I look like a liar who’s trying to hide her pregnancy.”“It’s not your fault,” Ethan said. “It is,” I said. “Because I married him. Because I was stupid

I didn’t sleep. I tried, but it wasn't forthcoming. I laid in Ethan’s guest bed for 4 hours staring at the ceiling. Counting the cracks. Counting my breaths. Counting all the ways David could still get to me. The note was still in my bag. “You think it’s over? It’s just starting.” -DAnd the photo. Me asleep in bed. while I was at the hospital with Nina. He was in my apartment. He knew where I slept. He knew when I was gone. At 3:17 AM I gave up. I walked out to Ethan’s living room. It was all glass and cold light. The city below looked peaceful. Like none of this was happening. Ethan was already there. On the couch, shirt off. Laptop open. He looked up when he heard me. “Couldn’t sleep?”“Obviously,” I said. I pulled his blanket around me and sat on the other end of the couch. Not too close. “You want tea? Water? To burn something down?” he asked. I almost smiled. “Water.”He got up and came back with two glasses. Handed me one. His fingers brushed mine. “You’re shaking,

*9:57*The countdown was burning into my eyes. Ethan was already running. He had my hand in his and we were flying down the hallway of Blackwood Tower. Behind us, his PR team was screaming into phones. "Get me the address!" Ethan barked at one of his guys. "Trace the livestream. Now!" I could barely breathe. Nina, tied up with a knife. And 10 minutes. "Where is she?" I said. My voice came out cracked. "We’ll find her," Ethan said. He shoved me into the elevator and hit B3. The parking garage. "We have to." The elevator doors closed. For three seconds it was just us and the red numbers counting down. *9:55*"Did you see her?" I asked. "Did she look hurt?" "No," Ethan said. But his jaw was tight. "Not yet." The doors opened and we ran. His car was already idling. Two guards jumped in the front. "Drive," Ethan said. The car screeched out. I had my phone in my hand. I refreshed the link David sent but nothing showed. Just blank. "He cut the stream," I said. "Good," Ethan sa
