INICIAR SESIÓNThe handcuffs were cold.
They put them on Ethan first.
"Mr. Blackwood, you’re under arrest for assault with a deadly weapon," the cop said.
"That’s bullshit," Ethan said. Calmly.
"He had a knife. I was protecting her."
"Tell it to the judge," the cop said.
Then they turned to me.
"Ms. Miller? You too."
I looked down at my wrists. Plastic cuffs. They cut into my skin.
"For what?" I said. My voice came out small.
"Suspicion of assault," the cop said. "Mr. Blackham is injured and bleeding. He says you attacked him."
David. On the floor. Bleeding from his own arm. Smiling while he did it.
This was the plan all along.
The ambulance lights were flashing red and blue across the warehouse. People were shouting. Cameras. When did the press get here?
"Don’t say anything," Ethan said to me as they walked him past. "Lawyers. Now."
Then they put me in the back of a cop car.
Alone.
The door shut.
And I started shaking.
The station smelled like bleach and old coffee.
They put me in a room. White walls. One table. One camera in the corner.
Two hours. No water. No lawyer.
Just me and the sound of my own breathing.
Finally the door opened.
Not a cop.
Ms. Reyes.
She looked furious.
"What the hell happened?" she said. She didn’t hug me. She never hugs. She slammed her briefcase on the table.
"David cut himself," I said. "And blamed me."
"I know," she said. "It’s all over the news. " CEO'S EX AND CURRENT FIANCE ARRESTED AFTER STABBING."
My stomach flipped.
"They’re saying I stabbed him?"
"They’re saying both of you did," Ms. Reyes said. "David’s in the hospital with a 'self-inflicted defensive wound.' His lawyer says you lured him there and attacked him."
"That’s a lie."
"I know that," she snapped. "The problem is, we have no proof it’s a lie."
The door opened again.
Ethan.
No handcuffs. His hair messy. Jacket gone.
He looked at me and I almost cried.
"You okay?" he said.
"No," I said. "Are you?"
"Fine," he said. He sat next to me. His knee brushed mine. "My lawyers got us released. No charges filed. Yet. But David filed a restraining order against both of us."
Ms. Reyes leaned forward. "Here’s the deal. The police have the warehouse security footage. But it’s corrupted. 'Technical error.' The only footage they have is from outside. It shows you going in. It shows Ethan going in with a gun 5 minutes later. It shows David coming out on a stretcher."
"That’s it?" I said.
"That’s it," Ms. Reyes said.
"And his word against ours," Ethan said.
"Exactly," Ms. Reyes said. "And right now, David Blackham is the victim. You two are the suspects."
I put my head in my hands.
This was how he won.
Not with love. Not with money.
With lies.
We didn’t go home.
Ethan’s lawyers said it wasn’t safe. "He could claim you violated the restraining order."
So we went to a hotel. A shitty one. No penthouse. No guards. Just one room with two beds.
I sat on the edge of mine.
Ethan stood by the window.
"He planned this," I said. "The break-in. The interview. The warehouse. All of it."
"Yes," Ethan said.
"He wants me in jail."
"He wants you broken," Ethan said. "Jail is just step one."
I looked up. "What do we do?"
Ethan turned. "We fight dirtier."
"What does that mean?"
"It means we stop playing defense," he said. "David lied about 2023. He lied about the hospital. He lied about the stabbing. So we prove it."
"How?" I said. "The records are buried. The police won’t help. No one believes me."
Ethan pulled out his phone. "Because of this."
He hit play.
Audio.
Static. Then voices.
David’s voice.
"Make sure the cameras are off. No one can know."
Another voice. A nurse.
"Mr. Blackham, we can’t just delete a patient’s file—"
"You can if you want to keep your job."
Then everywhere went silent.
Ethan stopped it.
"Where did you get that?" I whispered.
"That nurse?" Ethan said. "She quit 6 months after you were admitted. She’s been working at a clinic in Chicago. My PI found her yesterday. She recorded everything. She was scared of David."
Tears hit my cheeks before I could stop them.
"That’s proof," I said.
"That’s proof of 2023," Ethan said. "But we need proof of tonight. That he cut himself."
"There is no proof," I said. "The cameras were 'corrupted'."
Ethan smiled. It wasn’t a nice smile.
"Not all of them."
3 AM.
We were in the back of a van. Ethan’s PI, a guy named Marcus, was typing on three laptops.
"Got it," Marcus said. "The warehouse. It’s owned by Blackwood Holdings. Subsidiary. I have admin access to the security system."
"And?" Ethan said.
"And the 'corrupted' footage isn’t corrupted," Marcus said. "It’s deleted. Manually. 11:04 PM. From an IP address registered to Blackham Industries."
Ms. Reyes swore. "David deleted it himself."
"But," Marcus said, "the system auto-backs up to a cloud server every 15 minutes. And that backup? It didn’t get deleted."
He hit enter.
The screen filled with video.
Black and white.
Me. Walking in.
David. Standing there with the knife already in his hand.
Me talking.
David cutting his own arm.
Ethan kicking the door in.
David dropping the knife and falling.
All of it.
I covered my mouth.
"Oh my god," I said.
"Send it to every news station," Ethan said. "And to the police. And to David’s lawyer."
Marcus was already typing. "Done. It’ll be live in 10 minutes."
Ms. Reyes looked at me. "You ready for this? Once this goes out, there’s no going back. He’ll come at you with everything."
I thought about the handcuffs. About the hotel. About the video of me in the hospital.
"Let him," I said.
6 AM.
I woke up to my phone blowing up.
100 texts. 200 emails.
The first headline:
“EXCLUSIVE VIDEO: DAVID BLACKHAM FAKED ATTACK, FRAMED SARAH MILLER AND ETHAN BLACKWOOD”
The second:
" POLICE REOPEN 2023 CASE AGAINST DAVID BLACKHAM AFTER AUDIO LEAK”
The third:
“S.M. COLLECTIONS SALES UP 400% AFTER VOGUE INTERVIEW”
I laughed. I couldn’t help it.
Ethan was already up. Suit on and coffee in his hand.
"Morning, CEO," he said.
"Don’t call me that," I said.
"Too late," he said. "You are."
We turned on the TV.
David’s press conference.
He was in a hospital bed. Arm in a sling.
"I would never hurt Sarah," he said. "She’s confused. She’s been through a lot. I just wanted to talk. To help her. And she... she attacked me."
The reporter held up a tablet. "Mr. Blackham, we have a video of you cutting yourself. Care to comment?"
David’s face went blank.
"No comment," he said. And the feed cut.
Ms. Reyes called. "Charges dropped. Restraining order against you dismissed. New restraining order filed. Against him. He can’t come within 500 feet of you."
I hung up and stared at Ethan.
"We did it," I said.
"We did," he said.
He stepped closer.
"Thank you," I said. "For believing me."
Ethan looked at me.
"You don’t have to thank me," he said. "I would burn the city down for you."
The air got thick.
He was too close.
I could smell his cologne. See the stubble on his jaw.
"Ethan," I said.
"Yeah?"
"Don’t—"
He kissed me.
Not soft. Not careful.
Desperate. Like he’d been holding it in for months.
I kissed him back.
Because I was tired of being scared. Tired of being alone. Tired of surviving.
For once I wanted to feel something good.
His hands were in my hair. Mine were on his chest.
We broke apart, breathing hard.
"That was a mistake," I said.
"Was it?" Ethan said.
Before I could answer, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A voice.
Not David.
A woman.
"Sarah Miller?" she said.
"Who is this?"
"You don’t know me," the woman said. "But I was there. In 2023. In the room. When he did it."
My blood froze.
"What?"
"I have something you need to see," the woman said. "Something David doesn’t know I have. Meet me. Tonight. Alone."
"Who are you?" I said.
The woman laughed. Soft. Sad too.
"I’m the one who stitched you up," she said. "I’m the nurse from the audio."
Then she hung up.
Ethan was watching me. "Who was that?"
I lowered the phone.
"The nurse," I said. "She says she has proof. From 2023."
Ethan frowned. "We don’t go alone. It’s a trap."
"It might be our only chance to end this," I said.
Ethan shook his head. "No. We do this my way. With lawyers. With the police."
"And while we wait, David finds her first," I said.
We stared at each other.
Finally Ethan said, "Fine. But I’m coming with you. And if anything feels wrong, we leave. Deal?"
I nodded.
The text came through a second later.
An address.
An old clinic.
On the edge of town.
Midnight.
Come alone.
The tablet in Ethan’s kitchen was beeping right in front of me. And under it, a new timer. Red. Counting down from five minutes.00:05:00.But the beeping wasn’t coming from the tablet. It was coming from below. My blood went so cold that I couldn’t feel my hands anymore. The penthouse was empty. No bomb. No Ethan. Just me, in a ruined white dress, standing in the middle of his living room while a new countdown started somewhere I couldn’t see. My phone buzzed. Unknown number. “You picked the wrong door, wife. Good thing I like second chances.” I threw the phone, it hit the wall and cracked. I didn’t care. “Ethan!” My voice ripped out of me. “Ethan!” No response . Just the beeping sound, non stop. Steady from somewhere down. I ran to the balcony doors and pushed them open. The city air hit me, sharp and cold. Lights everywhere, and 8 floors down, traffic, people moving about. And somewhere in this building, another timer. My legs gave out and i slid down
00:04:58. The red numbers burned into my eyes. The cathedral had turned into hell in 10 seconds. Screams. Chair falling .A baby crying somewhere in the back. The priest dropped the bible, clutching his chest like he was having a heart attack. And through it all, cameras. Dozens of them. Live-streaming the moment “the broken wife” chose between her husband and her lover. In all these, David didn't move an inch. His hand was still locked around mine. The whole building was surrounded by the FBI. And he was smiling at me. Like this was exactly what he wanted. “Get your hands off her,” an FBI agent yelled, shoving between us with a gun pointing at David.David raised his cuffed hands in surrender, but he didn’t let go of my fingers right away. He squeezed it twice. “5 minutes, Sarah. That's all you have to save him." A code. Our old code. " I’m here. I’m not leaving you.”The same squeeze he gave me on our first wedding day. I wanted to vomit. David leaned in with his lips a
SARAH'S POVThe TV kept looping it. *DAVID BLACKHAM ESCAPES FROM PRISON. CONSIDERED ARMED AND DANGEROUS.*Ethan was already shouting into his phone. “I want every exit sealed. Now.”My hands wouldn’t stop shaking, because 30 seconds ago my phone buzzed showing a photo. Ethan. Asleep in his own bed, bare chest, mouth open. And in the doorway behind him, a shadow of a man watching.“He was here,” I whispered. “Last night. While we were kissing downstairs.”Ethan threw his phone. “Call security!”But it was too late. The front door buzzer went off. Not the building. The penthouse door. The door bell rang. All of us froze. Ethan pulled a gun from his drawer, the two security guards drew theirs too.“Who is it?” Ethan yelled toward the door.A voice muffled through the wood sounding calm and familiar. “Delivery for Ms. Miller.”It wasn’t a delivery. Ethan motioned to the guard. The guard looked through the peephole. Then he shook his head. “No one there.”Ethan opened the door anyw
The photo wasn’t me. But it looked like me. Same coat. Same hair. Same slump on the courthouse steps. Except my eyes were closed. And there was blood on my shirt. “BREAKING: SARAH MILLER COLLAPSES OUTSIDE COURTHOUSE. RUSHED TO HOSPITAL. PREGNANCY COMPLICATIONS SUSPECTED.”The comments were already there. “See? She’s hiding it.”“Poor babies.” “David deserves to know.” I was sitting in Ethan’s car. Alive. Breathing. 4 hours from the hearing. And the whole internet thought I was in the ER losing twins. “Who took that?” Ethan said. His voice was low and Angered.“David,” I said. “Has to be. No one else benefits.”Ethan threw the phone in the backseat. “We’re going in early. We’re going to the judge’s chambers. Now.”“Will that help?” I asked. “It’ll help if we do it before they arrest you for faking a collapse,” Ethan said. I laughed like a sob. Then we drove. People were looking at their phones and then at me. Whispering. When we got to the courthouse, reporters were already
I stared at the text until the words stopped making sense. “48 hours, Sarah. Come to the hearing and admit it’s mine. Or I release the sonogram of the twins.”Twins. David was in prison. In cuffs. And he was still doing this. Ethan’s arms were still around me from five seconds. I pulled back. “I need air,” I said. “Sarah—” “I need air.” I walked to the window of his penthouse. 40 floors up, the night looked like a field of stars. None of them felt like mine. My phone buzzed again. Ms. Reyes. Then the board. Then a reporter. Then my dad’s old lawyer. I silenced all of it. Ethan came up behind me but didn’t touch me. “We’ll fight it,” he said. “The sonogram is fake. We can prove it.”“How?” I said. My voice sounded flat. Even to me. “He used my name. My insurance. A real hospital. Someone on the inside took his money and now I look like a liar who’s trying to hide her pregnancy.”“It’s not your fault,” Ethan said. “It is,” I said. “Because I married him. Because I was stupid
I didn’t sleep. I tried, but it wasn't forthcoming. I laid in Ethan’s guest bed for 4 hours staring at the ceiling. Counting the cracks. Counting my breaths. Counting all the ways David could still get to me. The note was still in my bag. “You think it’s over? It’s just starting.” -DAnd the photo. Me asleep in bed. while I was at the hospital with Nina. He was in my apartment. He knew where I slept. He knew when I was gone. At 3:17 AM I gave up. I walked out to Ethan’s living room. It was all glass and cold light. The city below looked peaceful. Like none of this was happening. Ethan was already there. On the couch, shirt off. Laptop open. He looked up when he heard me. “Couldn’t sleep?”“Obviously,” I said. I pulled his blanket around me and sat on the other end of the couch. Not too close. “You want tea? Water? To burn something down?” he asked. I almost smiled. “Water.”He got up and came back with two glasses. Handed me one. His fingers brushed mine. “You’re shaking,
