Se connecterEvelyn's POV
Richard's smile froze on his face.
"What?" he said. I held up the iPad. My hands were steadier than I expected. "I asked you a question. Who is Victoria?" He put the wine bottle on the dresser, his movements slow and careful. "Evelyn, why were you looking through my messages?" "Answer me." "I need you to calm down first." "Do not tell me to calm down!" My voice cracked. "Who is she? Who is the woman having your baby?" Richard's face went pale. He opened his mouth, closed it, then ran his hand through his hair. That was his tell. He always did that when he was about to lie. "It is not what you think," he said finally. "Really? Because I think you have been sleeping with someone named Victoria for months. I think she is pregnant. I think you married me to get close to my father's money." I stood up, the iPad still in my hand. "Tell me which part I got wrong." He moved toward me but I stepped back. "Do not touch me." "Evelyn, please. Let me explain." "Explain what? The photos? The messages? The fact that you gave her the same bracelet you gave me this morning?" Richard looked at the bracelet on my wrist, and something like guilt crossed his face. I actually wanted him to feel guilty. "Her name is not Victoria," he said quietly. "It is Tonia. Victoria is just… a code name we used." "Tonia." I laughed, but it sounded wrong. Broken. "Your business partner Tonia?" He nodded. "The woman you said was like a sister to you? The one you told me not to worry about?" "It just happened, Evelyn. We were working late one night and..." "Stop." I held up my hand. "I do not want to hear this. The explanation is not necessary…so save it ." "You asked me to explain!" "I asked you who she was. I did not ask for the details of how you betrayed me." I walked past him to the closet and pulled out a suitcase. My movements were mechanical, robotic. I grab my clothes, fold them and put them neatly in the bag. Richard watched me, his face twisted with panic. "What are you doing?" "Leaving." "Evelyn, no. We can work through this." I stopped and looked at him. Really looked at him. "Work through what, Richard? The affair? The baby? The fact that you have been using me this entire marriage?" "I never used you." "You told her you needed to keep me happy until the Henderson project closes. You said my father's connections are the only reason you are in the running." I zipped the suitcase. "That sounds like using me." Richard grabbed my arm, his fingers tight around my wrist. "That was just... I was frustrated. I did not mean it." "Let go of me." "Evelyn, I love you." "Wow! Really?... Fuck off, you do not even understand the definition of love ." I pulled my arm free. "And honestly, I am not sure you ever did." I grabbed my phone from the nightstand and called Mirabel. She answered on the second ring. "Hey, girl! You better not be calling to cancel tonight..." "Mirabel, I need you to draw up divorce papers." Silence on the other end. Then, "What happened?" "Richard had an affair. The woman is pregnant. Can you help me or not?" "I will have the papers ready by tomorrow morning." Her voice had gone cold and qprofessional. Mirabel was a lawyer, one of the best in the city. "Where are you going tonight?" "I do not know yet." "Come to my place. I will order takeout and we can go through everything." I looked at Richard, who was staring at me like I had just announced I was dying. "Okay. I will be there in twenty minutes." I hung up and picked up my suitcase. "Evelyn, please." Richard's voice broke. "Do not leave like this. Let us talk about it." "We just did." "I made a mistake! People make mistakes!" I walked to the bedroom door, then stopped and turned back to face him. " Some mistakes can never be fixed and this mess you just made, is one of them. You know what the worst part is? It is not even the affair. It is not even the baby." "Then what is it?" "It is that you made me give up everything I loved, everything I worked for, to support your dreams. And the whole time, you saw me as nothing more than a connection to my father's money." I took off the bracelet and threw it at his feet. "Keep it. Give it to Tonia. I am sure she will appreciate it more than I do. Of course she will because she is about to give you a child." I walked down the stairs and out the front door, leaving behind four years of my life and a marriage built on lies. The night air was cold against my face. I threw my suitcase in the trunk of my car and sat in the driver's seat, gripping the steering wheel. My phone buzzed. A text from Richard: "Please come back. We can fix this." I deleted it without responding. Another text came through, this one from an unknown number: "Mrs. Harrison? This is Tonia. I think we should talk." My chest tightened. How did she get my number? Before I could respond, another message appeared: "I know you found out about the baby. Richard just called me, very upset but there are things you do not know. Things he has not told you." I stared at the message, my fingers hovering over the keyboard. Finally, I typed back: "What things?" The three dots appeared, showing she was typing. My heart pounded as I waited for her response. Then the message came through, and everything I thought I knew shattered into even smaller pieces. "The baby is not his first. We have a son. He just turned two years old.”Evelyn's POVThe prosecutor's office smelled of old coffee and paper. I sat between Mirabel and Benjamin, watching Tonia walk in with a baby carrier and a tired expression.Rachel slept peacefully, unaware of the chaos around her.The prosecutor, a woman named Janet Chen, gestured for Tonia to sit. "Thank you for coming, Ms. Williams. I know this is difficult, especially so soon after giving birth.""I want to help," Tonia said quietly.Janet opened a folder on her desk. "I need you to tell me everything you know about Richard Harrison's financial activities.Specifically, his access to Henderson Enterprises accounts."Tonia took a deep breath. "Richard and I have been together for three years. In the beginning, he told me he was separated from his wife, that the marriage was just on paper for business reasons."I kept my face blank, even though the words cut deep."About a year ago, Richard asked me to help him with some company files. He said he needed someone he could trust, someon
Benjamin's POVVincent opened the door before we reached the porch, his face pale and drawn."Thank God you are here," he said, ushering us inside. "Mirabel is in the study. She brought the papers."Evelyn grabbed my hand as we walked through the house. Her fingers were ice cold.Mirabel sat at Vincent's desk, her laptop open, papers spread everywhere. When she saw Evelyn, she stood up and pulled her into a tight hug."How are you holding up?" Mirabel asked."I am here. That is all I can manage right now."Mirabel looked at me, her eyes sharp and assessing. "You must be Benjamin. I have heard a lot about you.""All good, I hope.""Let us just say you are doing better than your brother." She turned back to Evelyn. "We have a problem. Richard's lawyer filed a motion this afternoon.""What kind of motion?" I asked.Mirabel pulled up a document on her laptop. "He is claiming that the evidence against Richard was obtained illegally. That you, Benjamin, did not have proper authority to acce
Evelyn's POVThe hospital smelled like disinfectant and fear. I walked through the automatic doors with Benjamin beside me, my hands shaking even though I tried to keep them still."You do not have to do this," Benjamin said quietly. "No one would blame you if you turned around right now.""I would blame myself."The elevator ride to the maternity ward felt endless. I watched the numbers climb, just like I did at the Riverside Hotel yesterday. Was that really only yesterday? It felt like a lifetime ago.Floor 1. Floor 2. Floor 3."What room?" Benjamin asked.I checked my phone. Vincent had texted me the information. "Room 304."Floor 4. The doors opened.A nurse at the station looked up. "Can I help you?""We are here to see Tonia Williams," I said. The nurse checked her computer. "Are you family?""No. But she asked for me."The nurse looked confused but pointed down the hall. "Room 304. But she is in active labor, so you might not be able to stay long."We walked down the hallway. I
Benjamin's POV I arrived at the Harrison estate at eight in the morning. Detective Morrison and two uniformed officers were already there, parked discreetly down the street.Evelyn stood on the sidewalk, her arms crossed against the cold morning air. She wore jeans and a simple sweater, her hair pulled back. She looked tired but determined."You came," she said when she saw me."I said I would."Detective Morrison walked over, a warrant in his hand. "Ms. Henderson, we are ready whenever you are."Evelyn took a deep breath. "I am ready."We walked up the driveway together. I stayed close to Evelyn, close enough to catch her if she fell. She rang the doorbell.Richard answered in his pajamas, his hair a mess, his eyes bloodshot. When he saw Evelyn, his face lit up with desperate hope."Evelyn, thank God. I thought..." His eyes moved to me, then to the police officers behind us. "What is going on?"Detective Morrison stepped forward. "Richard Harrison, you are under arrest for embezzlem
Benjamin's POVI watched my brother storm into the hotel room like he owned the place, and something dark twisted in my chest. Richard always did this. Always assumed he had the right to control every situation."Get out," I said, standing up. "This is my room. You were not invited."Richard's eyes moved from me to Evelyn, who sat frozen on the sofa, her face pale. "Evelyn, what are you doing here with him?""That is none of your business anymore," I replied before she could speak.Richard took a step toward me, his hands clenched into fists. "You stay away from my wife.""Your wife?" I laughed, cold and bitter. "The wife you cheated on? The one you have been stealing from? That wife?""What are you talking about?"I gestured to the laptop, the scattered documents. "She knows everything, Richard. The affair, the embezzlement, your bankruptcy, your plan to steal her father's company. All of it."Richard's face went white. He looked at Evelyn. "You went to him? To Benjamin? Of all peopl
Evelyn's POVThe Riverside Hotel was the kind of place where rooms cost more per night than my first car. I stood in the elevator watching the numbers climb, my reflection staring back at me from the mirrored walls.Floor 1. Floor 2. Floor 3.What was I doing here? I did not even know Benjamin. He left the family before Richard and I started dating. All I knew about him came from angry comments at family dinners. He was the son who abandoned his responsibilities, the one who broke his father's heart.Floor 4.The elevator doors opened.Room 412 was at the end of a long hallway. I raised my hand to knock, then hesitated. The door opened before my knuckles touched the wood. The man standing there was tall, dark hair like Richard but longer, less controlled. He wore jeans and a black shirt, no tie, no expensive watch. His eyes were the same color as his brother's but there was something different in them. Something sharp and aware."Evelyn," he said. "Thank you for coming.""How do you k
