The Family Dinner

I did not go to Mirabel's apartment. I could not.

Instead, I drove to the one place that always made sense to me. The old Henderson Building on Fifth Street. My father designed it thirty years ago, and it was still one of the most beautiful structures in the city.

I parked across the street and stared up at the glass and steel facade, remembering the summer I was twelve. Dad brought me to this building every day for a month, teaching me about load-bearing walls and architectural balance.

"Buildings are like people, Evelyn," he told me. "They need a strong foundation or they fall apart."

My marriage had no foundation. Just pretty lies and expensive gifts.

My phone rang..Mirabel.

"Where are you?" she asked. "You said twenty minutes. It has been an hour."

"I needed to think."

"Are you okay?"

"No." My voice cracked. "She has a son, Mirabel. Richard has a two-year-old son with this woman."

Mirabel swore softly. "Come over..now. You shouldn’t be alone."

"I will. I just need a few more minutes."

I hung up and looked at Tonia's message again. She had sent a photo. A little boy with Richard's eyes and smile, sitting in a high chair, cake smeared all over his face.

Below the photo: "His name is Samuel. Richard sees him every Wednesday when he tells you he has late meetings. I am sorry you had to find out this way but you deserve to know the truth."

My hands shook as I typed back: "Why are you telling me this?"

Her response came quickly: "Because I am tired of being the secret. Richard promised he would leave you after your father invested in his company. That was two years ago. He keeps making excuses, saying the timing is not right. But now I am pregnant again and I am done waiting."

I stared at those words until they blurred together.

Richard never planned to stay with me. He was just waiting for the right moment to leave. Waiting until he had squeezed every last drop of usefulness from my father's connections.

Another text from Tonia: "He is taking you to his family's house tomorrow night, right? For the monthly dinner?"

I had forgotten about that. Grace Harrison's mandatory family dinners. The ones where she spent two hours reminding me I was not good enough for her son.

"Yes," I typed back.

"Good. I will be there too. Richard invited me as his business partner. I think it is time everyone knew the truth. Don't you?"

Before I could respond, my phone rang again. This time it was Richard.

I declined the call.

He called again. And again.

Finally, I answered. "What do you want?"

"Thank God. Evelyn, where are you? I have been calling for an hour."

"That is none of your business anymore."

"Please, just come home. We need to talk about this properly."

"About which part, Richard? The affair? The two-year-old son you have been hiding from me? Or the fact that you have been planning to leave me this entire time?"

Silence.

Then, "She told you about Samuel."

"Yes."

"Evelyn, I wanted to tell you. I swear I did b..u..t I didn't know how."

I laughed, cold and bitter. "You had two years to figure it out."

"I know…I know I messed up. But please, do not make any decisions tonight. Come to my mother's dinner tomorrow. We can talk afterward, just the two of us."

"Why would I come to your mother's dinner?"

"Because if you do not show up, she will know something is wrong. And if she finds out about Tonia before I have a chance to explain, she will make everything worse." His voice turned pleading. "Please, Evelyn. Give me one more day to fix this."

I closed my eyes, exhaustion washing over me. "Fine. I will be there but after tomorrow, I am done."

"Thank you. I promise..."

I hung up before he could finish.

The next evening, I stood in front of my closet at Mirabel's apartment, trying to decide what to wear to my own execution.

"The black dress," Mirabel said from the doorway. "If you are going down, look amazing doing it."

I pulled out the black dress and held it up. "Do you think I am crazy for going?"

"Yes. But I also understand why you are doing it." She walked over and squeezed my shoulder. "Grace has been horrible to you for years. At least this way, you get to watch her face when she finds out her golden boy is not so golden."

I smiled despite everything. "Is that wrong? Wanting to see her reaction?"

"Not even a little bit."

Two hours later, I pulled up to the Harrison family estate. The house was massive, all white columns and perfectly manicured gardens. Grace spent more on her rose bushes than most people spent on their cars.

Richard's car was already in the driveway. So was his sister Sylvia's SUV.

I checked my reflection in the rearview mirror one last time, then walked to the front door.

Richard opened it before I could knock. He looked terrible. Dark circles under his eyes, wrinkled shirt, hair uncombed.

"You came," he said.

"I said I would."

He reached for my hand but I pulled away. "Do not touch me."

"Evelyn, I..."

"Richard!" Grace's voice echoed from inside. "Is that Evelyn? Bring her in!"

I walked past Richard into the formal dining room where Grace sat at the head of the table, Sylvia to her right. Both women looked at me like I was something stuck to their shoe.

"Evelyn," Grace said, her tone cold. "How lovely of you to join us."

"Hello, Grace."

"It is Mrs. Harrison to you, dear."

Four years of marriage and she still made me call her Mrs. Harrison.

Sylvia smirked. "That dress is interesting. Did you borrow it from someone?"

"I bought it myself."

"Really? On what money? You do not work."

Grace laughed, a sharp sound like breaking glass. "Now, Sylvia, be nice. Evelyn does work very hard. Managing a household is quite the task."

The way she said it made it sound like an insult.

I sat down across from Sylvia, my spine straight, my face calm. I would not give them the satisfaction of seeing me break.

The doorbell rang.

Richard stood up quickly. "That must be Tonia. I invited her to join us for business discussion."

Grace frowned. "I told you no business at family dinners."

"It will just be a few minutes, Mother. I promise."

He left the room and I heard the front door open. Voices in the hallway. Then Richard returned with Tonia beside him.

She was beautiful. Tall, dark hair, perfect skin. She wore a cream dress that showed just a hint of a baby bump.

"Everyone, you remember Tonia," Richard said. "My business partner."

Grace's expression softened. "Of course! Tonia, darling, so good to see you. Please, sit down."

Tonia sat next to me, close enough that I could smell her perfume. The same scent I smelled on Richard's shirts all those nights he came home late.

"Thank you for having me, Mrs. Harrison," Tonia said sweetly.

"Always a pleasure." Grace turned to me. "Evelyn, you should take notes. Tonia here is about to become one of the youngest CEOs in the tech industry."

Sylvia nodded enthusiastically. "I wish my brother had married someone with ambition like Tonia."

I gripped my fork so hard my knuckles turned white.

Tonia touched my arm gently. "Actually, I wanted to talk to everyone about something important tonight."

Richard's face went pale. "Tonia, maybe we should..."

"No, Richard. We have waited long enough." She turned to Grace and Sylvia, her expression serious. "Mrs. Harrison, Sylvia, there is something you should know about Richard and me."

Grace leaned forward, curious. "What is it, dear?"

Tonia placed her hand on her stomach. "Richard and I are having a baby."

The room went silent.

Sylvia's mouth dropped open. Grace's fork clattered to her plate.

"What did you say?" Grace whispered.

"We are having a baby. And it is not the first one." Tonia pulled out her phone and showed them the photo of Samuel. "This is our son. His name is Samuel. He just turned two."

Grace looked at Richard, her face white with shock. "Tell me this is not true."

Richard could not meet her eyes. "Mother, I can explain..."

"You have a child? A two-year-old child? And you never told me your mother?"

"It is complicated..."

Grace turned to me, and for the first time since I met her, I saw something like sympathy in her eyes. "Did you know about this?"

"I found out yesterday," I said quietly.

"And you came here anyway?"

"Richard asked me to."

Grace stood up, her hands shaking. "Get out."

Richard looked up, shocked. "Mother..."

"I said get out! Both of you!" She pointed at Richard and Tonia. "How dare you bring this woman into my home, into my family dinner, and humiliate your wife like this!"

Sylvia stood too. "Mom, wait..."

"No!" Grace's voice cut through the room like a knife. "I did not raise my son to be this kind of man."

She turned to me, her expression softer than I had ever seen it. "Evelyn, I owe you an apology. I have treated you terribly since the day you married Richard, and you did not deserve any of it."

My throat tightened with unexpected emotion.

"But I want you to know something," Grace continued. "You are stronger than I gave you credit for. And whatever you decide to do next, you will have my support."

Richard stood, his face desperate. "Mother, please..."

"Leave. Now."

I watched as Richard and Tonia walked out of the dining room, their grand revelation turning into a disaster.

Grace sat back down and poured herself a glass of wine with shaking hands. "I am truly sorry, Evelyn."

Before I could respond, my phone buzzed with a text from an unknown number: "Meet me at the Riverside Hotel. Room 412. There is something you need to see about your husband. Come alone. - Benjamin Harrison."

Benjamin Harrison. Richard's older brother who left the family ten years ago and never looked back.

I stood up, my heart racing. "I have to go."

Grace nodded. "Whatever you need to do."

I walked out of that house, got in my car, and drove straight to the Riverside Hotel.

I had no idea what Benjamin wanted to show me. But at this point, I needed to know everything.

Even if the truth destroyed me completely.

  • MY EX-HUSBAND'S BROTHER   The Arrest

Benjamin's POV I arrived at the Harrison estate at eight in the morning. Detective Morrison and two uniformed officers were already there, parked discreetly down the street.Evelyn stood on the sidewalk, her arms crossed against the cold morning air. She wore jeans and a simple sweater, her hair pulled back. She looked tired but determined."You came," she said when she saw me."I said I would."Detective Morrison walked over, a warrant in his hand. "Ms. Henderson, we are ready whenever you are."Evelyn took a deep breath. "I am ready."We walked up the driveway together. I stayed close to Evelyn, close enough to catch her if she fell. She rang the doorbell.Richard answered in his pajamas, his hair a mess, his eyes bloodshot. When he saw Evelyn, his face lit up with desperate hope."Evelyn, thank God. I thought..." His eyes moved to me, then to the police officers behind us. "What is going on?"Detective Morrison stepped forward. "Richard Harrison, you are under arrest for embezzlem

  • MY EX-HUSBAND'S BROTHER   The Confrontation

Benjamin's POVI watched my brother storm into the hotel room like he owned the place, and something dark twisted in my chest. Richard always did this. Always assumed he had the right to control every situation."Get out," I said, standing up. "This is my room. You were not invited."Richard's eyes moved from me to Evelyn, who sat frozen on the sofa, her face pale. "Evelyn, what are you doing here with him?""That is none of your business anymore," I replied before she could speak.Richard took a step toward me, his hands clenched into fists. "You stay away from my wife.""Your wife?" I laughed, cold and bitter. "The wife you cheated on? The one you have been stealing from? That wife?""What are you talking about?"I gestured to the laptop, the scattered documents. "She knows everything, Richard. The affair, the embezzlement, your bankruptcy, your plan to steal her father's company. All of it."Richard's face went white. He looked at Evelyn. "You went to him? To Benjamin? Of all peopl

  • MY EX-HUSBAND'S BROTHER   The Hotel Room

Evelyn's POVThe Riverside Hotel was the kind of place where rooms cost more per night than my first car. I stood in the elevator watching the numbers climb, my reflection staring back at me from the mirrored walls.Floor 1. Floor 2. Floor 3.What was I doing here? I did not even know Benjamin. He left the family before Richard and I started dating. All I knew about him came from angry comments at family dinners. He was the son who abandoned his responsibilities, the one who broke his father's heart.Floor 4.The elevator doors opened.Room 412 was at the end of a long hallway. I raised my hand to knock, then hesitated. The door opened before my knuckles touched the wood. The man standing there was tall, dark hair like Richard but longer, less controlled. He wore jeans and a black shirt, no tie, no expensive watch. His eyes were the same color as his brother's but there was something different in them. Something sharp and aware."Evelyn," he said. "Thank you for coming.""How do you k

Evelyn's POV Richard's smile froze on his face."What?" he said.I held up the iPad. My hands were steadier than I expected. "I asked you a question. Who is Victoria?"He put the wine bottle on the dresser, his movements slow and careful. "Evelyn, why were you looking through my messages?""Answer me.""I need you to calm down first.""Do not tell me to calm down!" My voice cracked. "Who is she? Who is the woman having your baby?"Richard's face went pale. He opened his mouth, closed it, then ran his hand through his hair. That was his tell. He always did that when he was about to lie."It is not what you think," he said finally."Really? Because I think you have been sleeping with someone named Victoria for months. I think she is pregnant. I think you married me to get close to my father's money." I stood up, the iPad still in my hand. "Tell me which part I got wrong."He moved toward me but I stepped back. Evelyn's POV The box sat on the kitchen counter, wrapped in silver paper with a white bow.I stared at it while the pasta boiled over on the stove. Water hissed against the hot burner but I could not move. Could not breathe."Evelyn?" Richard's voice came from the living room. "Are you okay in there?"I turned off the stove with shaking hands. "Fine. Just… checking on dinner."The box was from Silverman Jewelers. The same place Richard bought my engagement ring four years ago. Inside was a diamond bracelet with a tiny engraving: Forever Yours. He had given it to me this morning before leaving for work, kissing my forehead and whispering that tonight would be special. Our fourth anniversary. He said he had big plans.I clasped the bracelet around my wrist, watching it catch the light. It was beautiful and expensive . Everything Richard gave me was expensive but expensive things could not fill the empty spaces in our marriage. My phone buzzed on the counter. A text from Mirabel."Girl,
