LOGINEthan pulled back and examined her face.
“Are you hurt?”
“She has scratches on her arm,” I answered. “I cleaned them and covered them, but we need to keep an eye on her.”
He looked at me as if I had done something wrong. “Why didn't you call me?”
I stared at him.
“Because you were upstairs taking a shower, and she was being chased by an infected man.”
“An infected man?”
He looked toward the door.
Outside, someone screamed again.
The sound was followed by several rapid gunshots.
Ethan went pale.
Vanessa clung to his arm.
“What are we going to do?” she whispered.
For the first time since I had known him, my husband had no immediate answer.
I moved toward the television and turned it on. Every local channel seemed to be carrying the same breaking news report. A reporter stood outside a hospital, speaking rapidly while police officers tried to push a growing crowd away from the entrance.
“Authorities are urging residents to remain indoors following several violent incidents involving individuals displaying severe confusion, aggression, and apparent insensitivity to pain. Emergency services are investigating whether the incidents are connected to an unidentified infectious disease.”
The camera shifted.
A man in a hospital gown burst through the entrance and attacked a police officer. Two other officers rushed forward, but the man threw one of them against a parked vehicle.
The reporter's voice rose.
“Viewers, please remain calm. We have not received confirmation that this is a widespread outbreak, and officials are asking the public not to circulate unverified information.”
The broadcast cut to a commercial.
Nobody spoke.
Ethan stared at the television.
Vanessa began crying again.
I felt as though the floor had disappeared beneath my feet.
The infection was here.
The first stage had begun.
And this time, I had not even finished preparing.
My phone rang, startling all three of us.
The caller was my mother.
I answered immediately.
“Mom?”
Her voice came through in broken bursts.
“Evelyn, listen to me. Your father is at the grocery store, and people are attacking each other in the parking lot. The police aren't doing anything. I need you to come and get us!”
I closed my eyes.
My parents lived across town, nearly forty minutes away in normal traffic. With the roads already filling with panicked drivers, the journey could take much longer.
“Mom, lock the doors. Stay away from the windows, and don't let anyone inside unless you know who they are. I'm going to find a way to reach you.”
“Hurry, Evelyn. Someone just attacked the cashier, and people are running everywhere!”
The call ended.
I stared at my phone.
My parents were still alive. In my previous life, I had lost contact with them during the first week of the outbreak. By the time I managed to reach their neighborhood, their house had been abandoned.
I had spent months wondering whether they had survived.
I wasn't going to lose them again.
I grabbed my keys and reached for my coat.
Ethan stepped in front of me.
“Where do you think you're going?”
“To get my parents.”
“Are you insane? Did you see what happened on television? You can't drive into that!”
“They're my parents, Ethan.”
“And Vanessa is injured! We can't leave her alone.”
I stared at him.
“Then stay with her.”
His mouth opened.
I pushed past him and headed toward the door.
“You can't just leave!” he shouted.
I turned around.
“You left me to die in another life, Ethan. I won't let you decide who deserves my help this time.”
The words escaped before I could stop them.
His face went blank.
“What did you just say?”
For one terrifying moment, I wondered whether I had revealed too much.
Then something struck the front door so hard that the entire frame shuddered.
Vanessa screamed.
The television flickered, and a loud emergency alert replaced the broadcast.
PUBLIC SAFETY WARNING: REMAIN INDOORS. AVOID ALL CONTACT WITH AGGRESSIVE INDIVIDUALS. DO NOT APPROACH THE INJURED UNLESS IT IS SAFE TO DO SO.
A second impact shook the door. Then came a voice from the porch.
Damien's POVI had imagined this moment too many times. In some versions, I reached her before the infected got inside. In others, I found her hiding in a room, frightened but unharmed. I had even imagined arriving too late again. That last possibility had kept me awake for nights. But nothing had prepared me for seeing Evelyn lying on the kitchen floor with a dead infected man beside her.“Evelyn.”She stared at me, struggling to catch her breath. Her clothes were torn, her shoulder was injured, and her face was wet with tears.I lowered my gun and approached her carefully.“Don't move yet. Let me check you.”I crouched beside her, looking for bite marks. She flinched when I touched her arm.“I'm not going to hurt you,” I assured her.“I know,” she whispered. Those two words nearly broke something inside me.She didn't know me. Not really.
Evelyn's POVThe infected man stumbled forward, forcing me to move away from the cabinet. I tried to reach the kitchen counter, hoping to find something I could use to keep him away, but my shoulder throbbed every time I lifted my arm.A glass lay broken near my feet. I bent to pick up a piece, but the movement sent another wave of pain through my shoulder. The man suddenly lurched towards me.I stumbled backwards and hit the refrigerator. My breath caught as he reached for my clothes.“Please, stay away!”I pushed against his chest, but he barely moved. His fingers caught my sleeve, and I struggled to pull free.He was stronger than me.Much stronger. My knees nearly gave way as I tried to keep him at a distance. I couldn't understand how someone who had been begging for help moments earlier could turn into this.“Somebody help me!”My voice cracked.I looked to
Evelyn’s POV“There's someone else outside,” he said. “I heard them screaming. I think they're coming here.”Ethan pulled his hand away. “What?”The man stumbled towards the living room. His shoulder struck the kitchen table, sending a glass crashing to the floor. He bent over, gripping the edge of the table as though he couldn't catch his breath.“Are you okay?” Ethan asked. The man didn't answer as his back began to jerk. I took two steps backwards.“Ethan, get away from him.”He turned his head. The man's mouth opened, but instead of words, a low, wet sound came out. His fingers tightened around the table until his knuckles turned white. Then he lifted his head and his eyes were bloodshot.“Help me,” he rasped.Ethan stepped closer but I grabbed his shoulder. “Don't!”The man lunged and everything happened at once.Ethan stumbled backwards as the stranger crashed into him. They hit the kitchen counter, sending plates and utensils scattering across the floor. The man's teeth snapped
Evelyn's PovThe voice became louder than before until we felt a slam against the windows and I shrieked in fear.“Get away from the window!” I screamed. The face staring at us through the broken kitchen window was pale, and blood ran from a cut above his eyebrow. One hand gripped the edge of the frame while the other reached blindly into the kitchen.Ethan grabbed Vanessa and pulled her behind him.“Help me!” the man gasped. “Please! They're coming!”I backed away, keeping my eyes on his hands. There was blood on his shirt, and his breathing sounded wrong. Every breath came out in a strained, choking gasp.“Don't touch him,” I warned the moment Ethan tried to get closer.“He's hurt,” Vanessa whispered and I whipped my gaze sharply to her.“He could be infected.”The man slammed his palm against the window. Glass fell onto the counter, and he cried out as a shard cut his wrist.“Please, I have a little girl!” he shouted. “She's outside. You have to help me!”My stomach tightened.I kn

Evelyn's Pov “Evelyn, please open the door!”Vanessa's voice shook through the entrance, followed by another desperate knock. I stood several feet away, staring at the blood smeared across her blouse. For a woman who had spent the past three months sleeping with my husband behind my back, she looked terrified enough to forget we were enemies.“Evelyn, I know you're there. Please, you have to help me!”I approached the door but kept the deadbolt in place.“What's wrong with you, Vanessa?”She looked over her shoulder toward the street. “Something happened. Please, just let me inside. I'll explain everything.”“Start explaining now.”“Evelyn, I can't stand out here!”“You seem to have plenty of energy for someone who drove to my house without telling me why.”Her expression crumpled. “Please don't do this. I'm bleeding.”I looked at the stain spreading across her blouse. It was dark enough to be blood, but I couldn't tell where it came from or how badly she was injured. For one dangero
