CHAPTER ELEVEN: WHAT THEY FOUND

last update Tanggal publikasi: 2026-08-18 06:12:48

It was almost an hour before Roman came for me, and by then I'd worn a path in my own nerves pacing the small space of the healer's wing, Ivy watching me with the particular patience of someone who'd clearly done this before, waited out someone else's fear in a locked room while a fight happened just out of sight.

When the door finally opened, Roman looked tired in a way I hadn't seen from him before, dirt on his knees, a fresh scrape along one forearm he hadn't bothered to clean yet.

  • MY MATE REJECTED ME ON OUR WEDDING NIGHT. NINE MONTHS...   CHAPTER TWELVE: THE WEIGHT OF WHAT HE WAS TOLD

Kane hadn't slept properly in weeks, and the borders had stopped offering him anything useful, though he kept walking them anyway, because sitting still in the pack house meant sitting with everything he'd done.Tonight the path took him past the old records hall, a squat stone building near the edge of Ashwood's territory that nobody used much anymore. He hadn't planned to stop. His feet took him there anyway. The council had shown him a single page, weeks before the wedding, out of what he now suspected was a much larger record. He'd built the largest decision of his life on it without ever asking to see the rest.He let himself in with the key he still carried as Alpha. Towers of old ledgers, half-preserved scrolls, most of it meaningless, births, deaths, land disputes settled generations back. It took him almost two hours to find the right shelf. The page was there, a single loose sheet tucked inside a larger, water-damaged ledger. He'd read it once, in a room full of frightened f

"Nobody breached the grounds. Nobody engaged.""Then what was it."He hesitated, which told me more than anything he could have said next."A single scout," he said finally. "Not attacking. Watching. My people caught his scent near the training field, close enough that he'd have seen everything, the exercises, you, all of it, before he ran."My stomach turned over. "Did you catch him.""No." His jaw tightened, just slightly. "He was fast, and he knew the terrain

  • MY MATE REJECTED ME ON OUR WEDDING NIGHT. NINE MONTHS...   CHAPTER TEN: LEARNING TO LISTEN

Roman brought me to the training grounds just after sunrise, when the air was still cold enough to see my breath, and Ivy trailing a careful distance behind with a blanket she clearly expected me to need before this was over."We're not fighting today," Roman said, before I could ask. "You're seven months pregnant. I'm not reckless enough to spar with you, whatever point you might try to make about needing to catch up.""Then what are we doing.""Listening." He gestured toward the open grass, empty except for the two of us and Ivy hovering near the treeline. "Whatever this power is, Corinne's fragments all agree on one thing. It doesn't come from strength. It comes from will. And will starts with hearing your own wolf clearly instead of fighting her into silence."I hadn't expected that. I'd expected drills, forms, something physical I could throw myself into. This felt slower, and in its own way harder."I don't know how to do that," I admitted. "Half the time I'm fighting her just t

  • MY MATE REJECTED ME ON OUR WEDDING NIGHT. NINE MONTHS...   CHAPTER NINE: THE NAMES THEY'RE USING

I didn't sleep that night. I lay in the dark going over everything Corinne had told me, turning the name Aisling over in my mind like a stone I couldn't stop touching, until Ivy found me at dawn still awake, staring at the ceiling."You look terrible," she said, setting a tray down without asking if I wanted it."I feel worse than terrible." I sat up slowly, the twins shifting with the movement, a low ache settling into my hip that had become familiar these past weeks. "Ivy. Did you know? About the Aisling name. About any of it."Ivy's hands stilled over the tray for just a bit too long before she answered."I knew fragments," she said. "Older healers pass certain warnings down, about bloodlines, about old power that can go wrong in the body as much as anywhere else. I didn't know it was you. Not for certain, not until Roman brought you here and started asking careful questions about your family history that he wouldn't explain.""Would you have told me. If you'd known sooner."She co

  • MY MATE REJECTED ME ON OUR WEDDING NIGHT. NINE MONTHS...   CHAPTER EIGHT: WHAT CORINNE REMEMBERS

Elder Corinne lived apart from the main pack house, in a smaller stone cottage at the edge of the training grounds, and Roman knocked on her door himself rather than sending someone ahead to announce us."I wondered how long it would take you," she said, opening the door before he'd finished knocking, her eyes moving past him to me before he could speak. "Come in, then. Both of you."The cottage was small and warm, lined with more books than I expected, stacked in uneven towers along every wall. Corinne moved through it like she'd long since stopped noticing the clutter, clearing two chairs by simply relocating the books on top of them to the floor."Sit," she said. "This isn't a short conversation."I sat. Roman stayed standing near the door, arms crossed, watching Corinne with an expression I couldn't quite read, something between respect and old, careful patience."You already know it's connected to the attack," Corinne said, settling into her own chair across from us. "Roman would

  • MY MATE REJECTED ME ON OUR WEDDING NIGHT. NINE MONTHS...   CHAPTER SEVEN: THE FIRST WARNING

The attack came at night, three weeks after the council meeting, and it wasn't Ashwood.I woke to the sound of the perimeter horn, a long, low note I'd heard exactly once before, during a drill Ivy had walked me through in my second month here, just in case. This wasn't a drill. I knew that before I was even fully out of bed, some old instinct dragging me upright before my mind had caught up to my body.Ivy was in my doorway within a minute, already dressed, already moving. "Stay in the healer's wing. Whatever you hear, do not come outside.""Whose land is this," I asked, pulling a robe on with hands that wouldn't quite stop shaking. "Whose horn is that.""Not Ashwood's." She was already pulling me down the hall as she said it, faster than I could manage on my own. "That's the pattern for an unmarked pack. Rogues, or someone hiding their colors on purpose."The healer's wing had a reinforced door I hadn't paid much attention to before, the kind meant to keep people out rather than in,
