Chapter 15 – A Fragile Surrender

Kennedy’s POV

I told myself I could let her go. That I didn’t need her. That she was a passing distraction, nothing more.

But then I saw her this morning… head bowed at her desk, eyes fixed on the screen, her lips pressed tight as though even breathing the same air as me hurt her. She didn’t look up once. Not once.

That’s when I knew I’d been lying to myself.

Jane Shane was already under my skin, and nothing I did could scrape her out.

“Miss Shane,” I called, my voice sharper than it needed to be, “those reports aren’t going to finish themselves. There's a lot to do, my meetings, I need you to give me reports on all the previous meetings held in my absence.”

She stiffened but didn’t look at me, only nodded and typed faster. The sight twisted something inside me. I wanted to drag her into my office, demand she look at me, argue with me, fight me. Anything but this cold silence. I could barely stand it. I was worried about her, concerned about how she feels, what she thinks.
