CHAPTER 18- MORE THAN ONE BOSS

Anna's POV

The messages kept arriving.

I finished the wind-load notes and sent the revised model back to Jun with three clear instructions. Before the reply came, Mei appeared at my door with a cost summary from Finance. The material substitution they proposed would save money on the east tower cladding but changed the thermal performance enough to affect the environmental targets. I compared the two reports side by side, marked the conflicting lines, and called the Procurement desk.

A woman named Helen answered. Her voice was brisk, already mid-calculation on another project. I explained the conflict without raising my tone. She listened, asked for the exact specification numbers, and promised a revised quote by mid-afternoon. I thanked her and ended the call, then forwarded the marked pages to the Environmental team with a short note requesting their assessment of the performance drop.

Emily returned with a tablet full of coordination requests. We sat at the side table and worked through them in order. Architecture needed confirmation on the setback dimensions. Engineering wanted clarity on the transfer-beam revision before they locked the steel package. Project Development required an updated timeline that reflected the new consultant constraints. I answered each one with the data I had, noted what still needed verification, and assigned the follow-ups.

A senior engineer from the structural group, Chen, stopped by with a rolled set of connection details. He waited until I finished speaking with Emily, then spread the sheets across the remaining space on the table.

“The joint at grid C still shows a clash with the service riser,” he said. “If we shift it, we lose clearance on the public terrace.”

I leaned over the drawing, traced the conflict with one finger, and proposed a minor rotation of the riser core. Chen studied the change, nodded once, and took the sheets back to revise. The exchange lasted less than four minutes. No extra words.

By late morning the volume of open items had grown. I opened a fresh document and began compiling a concise breakdown for Andreas, starting from key decisions made, remaining conflicts, cost implications, and the revised sequence for the next two weeks. The responsibility settled heavier with every line I added. I was not only designing. I was holding the threads that connected six departments and making sure none of them pulled the others out of alignment.

At 11:40 a message appeared on my screen.

“My office. Five minutes. Bring the breakdown”.

I saved the file, printed two clean copies, and walked the corridor to the corner office. The door was open. Andreas sat behind the desk, one folder already open in front of him. He did not look up until I placed the pages on the clear space between us.

“Summarize the material conflict,” he said.

I did. The original cladding, the proposed substitution, the thermal difference, the effect on the environmental certification targets, and the cost delta Helen had confirmed. He asked three questions, each short, each aimed at a specific number or risk. I answered without hesitation. My hands remained still at my sides.

He turned one page, scanned the timeline, then closed the folder.

“Lock the original cladding. Inform Procurement and Environmental today. Adjust the cost report accordingly and send the final version before six.”

“Understood.”

He gave a single nod. The interaction ended. I left the office with the second copy of the breakdown still in my hand and returned to my desk. The entire exchange had taken under seven minutes.

Emily was waiting when I sat down again. We divided the remaining tasks. She handled the internal notifications while I drafted the formal confirmation to Helen and the Environmental lead. Other members of the team moved in and out..Jun with a progress update on the massing model, a junior architect with a question about drawing standards, an administrative coordinator confirming the booking for the next client review.

Each conversation stayed focused on the work. I answered, directed, and kept the document open so nothing slipped.

Late in the afternoon Emily gathered her tablet and stood.

“I’m heading out. Don’t stay past seven if you can help it.”

“I’ll finish the cost adjustment and the next-stage notes. Then I’ll go.”

She gave a small, knowing look and left.

The open floor gradually emptied, screens went dark, the low conversations faded until only the soft hum of the building systems remained. I stayed at my desk, organizing the day’s findings into a clean sequence for tomorrow, open items, decisions locked, questions still waiting for answers. The corporate machine kept turning even after the people left. I could feel the size of it now: not one difficult CEO, but an entire network of departments, deadlines, and expectations that all had to move together.

I reached for the small bottle of hand cream in the drawer, the unscented one I kept for days when my hands felt dry from paper and screens. I smoothed a thin layer over my palms. The faint, clean scent rose.

My hands stilled.

For a moment the quiet office dissolved. The same light fragrance, the same clean note against skin, a hotel room five years earlier, low light, a stranger’s voice close to my ear. The memory arrived without permission and without full shape, only the sensory edge of it.

I closed the bottle and set it back in the drawer. My fingers remained pressed against the edge of the desk until the fragment loosened its hold.

I returned to the open document and continued typing.

Anna's POV The next morning, I walked Amyra to the school gate and waited until she disappeared inside with the other children. Teacher Lin was already standing near the entrance, folder in hand. She caught my eye and stepped closer.“Ms. Li. Thank you for making time.”I nodded once, fingers tightening around the strap of my bag. I could already guess what she wanted to talk to me about. “You wanted to speak about Amyra”, I asked calmly.Teacher Lin’s voice stayed low. “She’s been participating well, but I’ve noticed she always more rest after longer activities. The interschool singing competition is in three weeks and she wants to join. I think it’s good for her, but I'm afraid rehearsal stretches would be too stressful for her to handle. I wanted you to know so you can decide.”My chest tightened. I kept my face steady and swallowed once before answering. “If she wants to join the competition, then please let her. I'll speak with her and make sure she's careful. You can keep the

Anna's POV It was already after nine when I got home. The living room light was still on. Mama sat on the sofa with a folded scarf in her lap. Papa looked up from the small table where he had been sorting pharmacy receipts.“You’re late again,” Mama said, but her voice held no sharp edge.“The work ran long.” I set my bag down and loosened the top button of my blouse. “Everything is fine. The project is moving.”Papa nodded once. “Good. We’re proud of you.”Mama’s hands stilled on the scarf. “As long as you’re eating and sleeping a little.”“I am.” I gave them both a small smile that felt thinner than I intended. “I’m going to check on Amyra.”They did not stop me.I pushed her door open carefully. The room was dim, lit only by the soft glow of the night-light she still needed. Amyra lay on her side, one arm tucked under the pillow, the other resting lightly over her chest the way she always slept. Her curls had spilled across the pillow. The yellow dress from the morning was folded

  • MY ONE-NIGHT STAND BOSS   CHAPTER 17-THE RULE EVERYONE FEARED

Anna's POV I stepped through the glass doors of Mo Ting Global twelve minutes past the hour. My pulse sat high in my throat. The company’s rules on punctuality were not suggestions. Mr. Kim had made that clear on the first day, and every floor still moved as if those rules were written into the walls. I expected someone to stop me…a note, a look or a quiet summons. Instead the lobby continued its usual flow of people with passes and purpose. I kept my head level and walked toward the elevators, fingers tight around the strap of my bag. On the fifty-eighth floor, the Planning & Development Division was already working. People's working screens glowed, conversations stayed low. I moved through the open area toward the cluster of workstations that belonged to the Eco-City team and into the small office assigned to me as Assistant Architectural Director. The door closed behind me with a soft click. I set my bag down, sat, and opened the laptop before my hands could start to shake.

  • MY ONE-NIGHT STAND BOSS   CHAPTER 16-A MORNING LIKE ANY OTHER

Anna's povI was already dressed when I opened Amyra’s door.“Time to get up, baby”, I said as I entered Amyra's room. She lay curled on her side, one arm under the pillow, and the other resting lightly over her chest. I sat on the edge of the mattress and brushed a curl from her forehead. Her eyes opened slowly. She blinked, then stretched both arms until her small fists trembled in the air. I waited until she sat up before guiding her toward the bathroom. The water ran warm. I helped her out of her sleep shirt and into the tub, washing her hair carefully so the soap would not sting her eyes. She hummed the days-of-the-week song under her breath while I rinsed the last of the shampoo. When I lifted her out and wrapped the towel around her shoulders, she leaned against me for a moment, still half-asleep, before I dried her off and reached for the yellow dress with the stars along the hem.She stood still while I buttoned the back, then turned in a slow circle so the skirt would flare. I

  • MY ONE-NIGHT STAND BOSS   CHAPTER 15- THE FIRST CRACK

Anna's POV The document room door closed behind me with a soft click.I set the recovered plots on the counter and pressed both palms flat against the cool surface. The brief contact of his hand on my arm still registered, warmth, pressure, the automatic strength of it. I drew one slow breath, then another, until the tightness in my chest eased enough to move.I sorted the sheets by number, stacked them neatly, and returned to my desk. The open floor continued its quiet rhythm. No one commented on the collision. I opened the West Ridge file and forced my attention onto the revised lighting calculations. An hour later a message appeared on my screen.“Conference Room B. West Ridge coordination. Now”.I gathered the latest prints and walked the short corridor. Andreas was already seated at the head of the table with two structural engineers and one project manager. He glanced up once when I entered, then returned his eyes to the tablet in front of him.I took the remaining chair and la
