MasukKATYA
My phone fell out of my hand, hitting the ground in a dull thud.
My head spun as I tried to grasp what I had just watched.
Daniel had cheated on me. My stomach twisted violently, the video going around on a loop in my mind.
I staggered back, my legs hitting the edge of the sofa as I sank onto it.
“Okay… okay…” I muttered to myself, dragging a shaky hand through my hair. “There has to be… something…”
An explanation or a mistake…Anything.
My eyes snapped to the phone on the floor.
I lunged for it, grabbing it with unsteady hands and immediately dialing his number.
It rang three times.
“Pick up…” I whispered, my voice rising with each second. “Daniel, pick up the fucking phone.”
He did not and it went to voice mail.
I hung up immediately and dialed again.
Still nothing.
A hollow laugh escaped me. The thought that he was probably fucking someone else right at this very moment rose the bile in my throat.
I tossed the phone onto the bed this time and pushed myself up, my movements jerky and restless.
My eyes landed on the whiskey.
I grabbed the bottle, not even bothering with a glass this time, and took a long, burning swig straight from it.
It scorched down my throat, making my eyes water.
I took another swallow and then another until the tightness in my chest loosened.
Then I felt anger.
My grip tightened around the bottle.
Why did he send it to me?, I thought. What was he trying to prove?
Why would he insert himself into my life like some… some twisted messenger?
“Who does that?” I demanded aloud, even though I was alone. “Who goes around ruining people’s lives like it is nothing?”
That is what this was.
I stopped pacing, a strong thought suddenly forming in my mind.
Nikolai or whatever he calls himself is trying to ruin my life.
I am not letting this go.
I was still dressed so it was perfect. I was going to confront him.
I grabbed my phone, my clutch, and headed for the door.
…
The taxi ride back felt shorter or maybe I was just too wired to notice time passing.
My leg bounced impatiently as we drove, my mind racing faster than the car itself.
I could feel the anger burning in my chest as I thought about all the ways I was going to confront him.
The car pulled up in front of The Ninth Circle, the building looming just as dark and imposing as before.
Only this time… It fucking pissed me off.
I stepped out before the car had fully stopped, heels clicking sharply against the pavement as I walked straight toward the entrance.
The man at the door was the one who had taken my number and he recognized me immediately.
“Miss,” he said, stepping slightly in front of me. “What are you…?”
I did not answer him as I pushed past him, walking inside.
I saw the man I was looking for perched on a chair with women flanking every side of him. They hovered around him like he was the center of gravity, laughing, touching, vying for his attention.
“Hey…” The guard tried to stop me but I was already walking across the room to Nikolai who was watching me approach, those same intense green eyes locking on me.
The moment I reached him… I slapped him, hard.
The sound cracked through the air and everything around us had stilled.
Gasps erupted from the women around him.
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw movement.
There were men in black stepping out from the shadows with guns strapped to their waist. I hadn’t even noticed them before.
My heart stuttered.
Maybe I did not think this one through.
Nikolai waved a hand and the men retreated back to the shadows.
Slowly, he turned his head back to me, his eyes glittering with amusement.
What did he always find so funny?
“How dare you?” I snapped, my voice shaking despite my best efforts. “How dare you send that to me?”
“I thought you should know what your boyfriend was doing in my club while you were waiting like a good little girl for him to come out of the bathroom”
His tone was infuriatingly calm.
“You thought I should know?” I echoed, disbelief lacing every word. “Really?”
My chest heaved.
“That is the only reason you sent me a video of my boyfriend…” my voice cracked, but I pushed through it, “… getting his cock sucked by another woman on my anniversary?”
I watched the surprise enter his eyes at the mention of anniversary.
Ah.
So he didn’t know.
It made it a whole lot worse because it would have been much better to think he was trying to sabotage the day for us.
“I am sorry about that,” he said, and for once, the amusement was gone. “I had no idea.”
I scoffed.
My eyes were not brimming with tears and I was fighting like hell to keep them back.
“I don’t need your apology,” I muttered.
He studied me for a moment then he gestured sharply.
“Everyone out.”
One of the women, clearly offended, stepped forward.
“Nikolai…”
“Get out, Lily.”
His tone snapped like a whip.
She flinched…actually flinched then shot me a glare before turning and leaving with the others.
Within seconds, the space cleared and it was just us.
Nikolai reached for me suddenly, pulling me firmly into a seat.
“Don’t touch me,” I snapped, jerking slightly.
“You looked like you were about to fall,” he said simply.
I opened my mouth to argue but closed it… he wasn’t entirely wrong. I had felt the whole floor swimming before my eyes.
He leaned forward so we were so close, our faces barely inches apart now.
“How many glasses?” he asked.
“What?”
“How many glasses have you had?”
I blinked at him, my brain lagged slightly.
“I…That is none of your business.”
“Many, then,” he said calmly.
My frown deepened.
“How do you know that?”
His lips curved slightly.
“Because, Kotyonok… you would not be smiling at me like that if you were not drunk.”
I stilled.
Smiling?
I was…
Oh.
I was.
But I could not stop.
Everything felt… off-balance… I felt off balance and I suddenly wanted to do something wild.
I leaned forward some more until there was barely any space between us.
I could feel his breath against my face.
“Are you going to keep talking…” I murmured, my lips dangerously close to his, “…or are you going to kiss me?”
His eyes flickered…searching my face, like he was trying to decide something.
My heart pounded harder.
“I do no kiss drunk girls… I like my women sober when I touch them, Kotyonok”
RENEEMy phone buzzed, jolting me from my thoughts. I looked down to see Iris' name lighting up the screen."I should take this." I said, turning to leave the room.“Who is it?” Sergei asked.“My best friend, Iris. You know the one whose name I stole that got me into this mess in the first place?”"Pick it up here.""Excuse me?" I stared at him."You heard me. I said take the call right here in front of us.”“I will do no such thing.”“We do not trust anyone right now” He sighed as if that should be obvious to me. “For all we know, you friend, Iris might be in on this.”“In on…” I sputtered. “Iris is not going to go along with getting my sister kidnapped. And why would she even do that?”“Like I said, the world is a dangerous place so pick up the damn phone?”I folded my arms across my chest and shot him a flat stare.“No and you are absolutely unbelievable.” I shook my head, my whole body trembling now. "I don't know what kind of world you crawled out of, Sergei, but where I come fro
RENEE “Hi, You must be Renee. I am Katya”The woman extended her hand toward me and I took it automatically caught off guard by the warmth in her voice. This was Nikolai’s wife. She was the most beautiful woman I had ever seen and she was spotting a round belly."It is nice to meet you." I said. Her smile widened. “You too and yes…” she looked down at her stomach. “I am pregnant.”Heat rushed into my cheeks in that moment because I realized that I had been staring at her midsection.“I am sorry for staring.” I let out. “I wasn’t trying to be rude or anything. I…”“Don’t be.” she waved dismissively. "I have become used to it."She leaned closer conspiratorially."Everyone suddenly thinks I am made of glass." A mischievous grin spread across her face. "I've started using it to my advantage.""What?""If I don't want to attend one of my husband's business dinners..." She shrugged. "...I tell everyone the baby needs me home."A laugh escaped me at that point."There."She pointed triump
RENEE“You cannot be serious!” My ears still rang from what Sergei had just said.Do what you want with the girl?He had practically just condemned Emma to death without so much as a thought behind it.I had to be hallucinating right now. There was no way a human being could stand there, look another person in the eye, and decide someone else's life wasn't worth saving.I marched straight toward him before anyone could stop me and grabbed him by the freaking collar.“Are you fucking crazy?”He didn't flinch or even blink.“You're talking about the only family I have!”His silence only fueled my anger. I jabbed a finger into his chest.“Call him back right this very minute.” I said, “Get whoever the fuck that was back on the phone!”His gray eyes settled on mine.“No.”My jaw dropped at the audacity of this crazy man.“No?”“I'm not giving him what he wants.” he went on.“You… You cant be serious right now.” My voice cracked. “This has to be some sort of bad dream. Renee breath… any mi
SERGEI "Boss!"Frantic footsteps came barreling through the house. One of the guards stepped aside just in time as Renee stormed into the entryway. What is she doing back here? Some irrational part of me had assumed that I would never see her again after she had left. I had even watched her get into the car and I wondered why I was feeling the way I was feeling. When I had asked her out on the date, it was just to satisfy that curiosity that was nagging away at me. But somehow, it still wasn’t satisfied. It was ridiculous.I'd known the woman for less than three days. Why the hell had the thought of never seeing her again bothered me? "What the fuck is this?" I descended the staircase, keeping my eyes fixed on her.She looked nothing like the woman I'd watched leave an hour earlier. Her hair had come loose and the mascara, which she had on from the previous night, had streaked beneath her eyes. Her breathing was uneven and most importantly, she looked absolutely furious. She close
RENEE “Where… am I?”The words came out as little more than a whisper. My head throbbed with a dull ache as I blinked at the unfamiliar ceiling above me.Just one look around the expensive-looking bedroom I found myself in, and I could tell instantly that this was definitely not my apartment.I pushed myself upright, immediately regretting it as a wave of dizziness rolled through me."Fuck..."Fragments of memory surfaced one after another. I remembered the restaurant and Sergei smiling at me across the table. The deafening crack of gunfire. And the blood… oh the blood. That was a sight that I was pretty sure I wouldn’t be able to get out of my head anytime soon.I groaned, realizing what had happened then and there."I fainted."Fantastic. I had survived a shooting only to pass out like some damsel in distress. My pride would never recover from this.Swinging my legs over the side of the bed, I stood carefully, testing whether they would cooperate. They did.I looked around the room
SERGEI "You look like hell."Nikolai's voice carried across the apartment just as I lifted the glass to my lips. I didn't drink. Instead, I watched the amber liquid swirl lazily inside the crystal."That's your way of saying good evening?""It usually works."A dry laugh escaped me."I'll keep that in mind."The apartment had gone unusually quiet after we brought the girl back. My men had spread themselves throughout the penthouse, doubling security without me needing to issue the order. Everyone was literally on edge now and I felt like it was even more for me.Someone had ambushed me in fucking public. In freaking Dubai. A city where cameras watched nearly every street and headlines traveled faster than bullets. Whoever orchestrated that attack hadn't cared about the consequences.Which meant they had either grown desperate or incredibly confident.Neither possibility sat well with me.I rested both palms against the marble counter behind the bar. I was tired at this point and it f
KATYACold fear crashed into me so fast as my eyes locked on the gun pointed directly at my face.“What are you talking about?”“When were you going to tell me that you are Viktor Orlov’s daughter?” he asked quietly.I blinked at him.Viktor Orlov…My father. My eyes widened in confusion.“How do yo
NIKOLAIHer anniversary? And that bastard had spent it with his cock out in my club.My jaw tightened. What kind of man does that? No…scratch that.I knew exactly the kind of man that did that. The kind that did not deserve a woman like her.“What the hell does Kotyonok even mean?”Her voice cut th
KATYA“Such a dirty word coming out of so sexy a mouth,” he drawled.Aside from the slight smirk that curved his lips, he did not react to my insult.Which, for some reason, irritated me more. Most men would have gotten offended or at least taken the hint and backed off but not him.He just stood t
KATYAOnly my boyfriend of five years would think the best place to celebrate our anniversary is in a club surrounded by naked women.“What do you think? Don’t you like it?” He asked me, grinning from ear to ear.Like it? I fumed.I was holding the thong Daniel had gotten me for our anniversary gif
