Chapter 3

Author: Tiptik
"Ella, you have to believe that you're the only one that I love. Everything I'm doing now is for my family to accept you so that I can marry you." Adrian touched the bandage around my head tenderly. "I'll get the drive to take you home. Don't let your injury come in contact with water."

He pulled his hand away when I remained silent. Before he left, he added, "I'll bring home your favorite dessert later."

With that, Adrian turned away and headed to the end of the corridor, where Cecelia's VIP room was. She had the care of the best private doctors of the Colombo family there.

All I could do was stand where I was as I watched him walk away. I suddenly burst out laughing as tears streamed down my face. "I don't believe you anymore…" I said softly into the air. Those words were also a reminder to myself, as I had given up on him. "I'll never believe any of your promises again, Adrian."

Adrian was gone three days after that, and during those three days, I received taunting videos from Cecelia every day. The videos showed Adrian cajoling his daughter softly with toys, and Cecelia leaning against Adrian's shoulder intimately as she smiled sweetly while watching father and daughter having fun together.

Those videos hurt, but I still finished all of them. I watched as he stayed by Cecelia's bed throughout the night, tenderly feeding her soup and carrying their daughter in his arms with the Manor City skyline behind them.

Every video showed Adrian with love in his eyes, and every time I finished a video, it felt like a million daggers to my heart. I continued to get hurt each time, until one day, I suddenly realized my heart no longer hurt. Could it be that my love for Adrian had died a year ago, the moment he turned his back on me?

Just as I was about to block Cecelia's number, my phone vibrated. I received a photo of Cecelia playing around with my Cartier watch in her hands. [Do you want your mother's watch back? If you do, come over and beg me for it.]

I jumped from my seat, and I suddenly felt woozy from the side effects of losing too much blood, but I had no time to care about my condition as I grabbed my coat and ran out the door.

Cecelia was carrying her daughter in her arms in the room, while humming a bedtime song. She looked up at me with a wide smile.

"You're here. Did you know Adrian put aside his work all this time while I have been admitted into the hospital just to take care of me? He used his connections to get all the best doctors in Neopolis just to make sure our baby is safe."

She emphasized the words 'our baby'.

My fingers dug deep into my palms as I asked coldly, "Where's my watch?"

Cecelia slowly picked up the out-of-fashion Cartier watch from the end of her bed and swung it in front of me.

"Are you talking about this?" She smiled cruelly. "If you kneel at my feet and lick my shoe as a show of respect to the future Donna of the Colombo family, I'll consider returning it to you."

I trembled with anger. "Don't push it."

"So what if I'm pushing it?" Cecelia threw me a look of disdain; her arrogance as a member of the Mafia was apparent to see. "You're just a lowly commoner, Ella, while I possess the purest Imano bloodline. My father is the Don of the Gambino family! Who do you think you are to fight me for Adrian Colombo's love? You should consider it an honor to kneel at my feet and lick my shoe!"

She pretended to let go of the watch. "I'm counting to three. If you refuse, I'll fling it to the ground. One two…"

I bit my lip so hard that it was almost bleeding. My knees felt heavy as I knelt with a loud thud to the ground. I held back my humiliation as I bent over with tears in my eyes to lick her heels.

Cecelia laughed. "Look at you. You're just like a pitiful dog. She stood up and looked down at me superiorly, "If you want the watch so bad, you can have it." She raised her hand, and I reached out for the watch, but just as I was inches away, she let go of it.

The watch smashed to the ground, and a huge crack appeared on the surface of the watch.

Cecelia stepped hard on the watch with her heels and pretended to look shocked, "Oh, aren't you careless? Why didn't you catch it?"

I trembled as I lunged toward the watch to grab it, but Cecelia suddenly screamed and fell backward, leaning against the wall and slowly sliding down to the ground. That was when someone slammed the door open.

Adrian and Salvatori were standing at the door, looking extremely grim. Several committee members were behind them.

"What are you doing?!" Salvatori accused sternly with the intimidation of an experienced mafia Don. I felt suffocated.

Cecelia jumped into Adrian's arms. "Adrian! My… My belly hurts so much! Please check on our daughter! I saw Ella pinching and beating her! I tried to stop Ella, but she pushed me…"

Adrian quickly went to his daughter and carried her in his arms. He started checking her condition, and when he opened up her little shirt, he saw the child's tender skin filled with bruises. I was in complete disbelief.

"It wasn't me! I never touched her!" I kept shaking my head as Salvatori strode over to me with a sharp look in his eye.

[I'm sorry, Ella. I know you've suffered a lot in the past years, but all I could do was beg you to hold on. [I initially planned to take care of Cecelia and sleep with her so she could quickly have a baby and we could finally be free, but when my daughter was born, I couldn't bear leaving her behind. She's my first child, after all, and it hurts me to think how she won't see her father again. I started to give in and agreed to spend more time with my daughter.[After that, the committee felt like a daughter wasn't enough, and they wanted me to have a son with her. She pretended that she wanted to help me, and she convinced me to sleep with her again after giving birth. I gave in again. [I felt guilty when this woman did so much for me without asking for anything and sacrificing her health, and I wanted to treat her better while I could.[However, my guilt and kindness toward her ended up hurting you so badly that you decided to leave without looking back. I listened quietly but said nothing. When Salvatori finally looked at me hopefully after he was done speaking, I started to say, "I won't forgive you for what you did to me, but I won't hate you either. I have my life to live, and I can't be wasting my time on this."Salvatori was silent for a long time after hearing what I said. He gave a long sigh in the end and took out a diary I instantly recognized. It was the first present I had given Adrian with the money I earned from working part-time when we first got together.Adrian was so happy then and said he would use it well and jot down everything about us in there for our children to read in the future. He wanted our children to know how much their parents loved each other."After you left, Adrian became a little crazy. He would scribble in this diary every day, but I have no idea what he's written in there. On the day he found you, he said he wanted you to read the diary once he brought you back, but now, he… I took the liberty o

Adrian and I soon boarded the helicopter, which took us to the nearest hospital. Medical personnel immediately moved Adrian onto a stretcher and straight into surgery. The door was closed behind them as I signed documents and pressed my thumbprint for some papers.I felt dizzy as I completed the procedure under the doctor's instructions, and after everything was done, I could not take it anymore. Everything went black, and I fell to the ground."Help! Someone fainted here!"It was the next day when I woke up. The nurses told me Adrian's surgery was a success, and he had been transferred to a normal ward. Unfortunately, he had lost too much blood, and due to his long-term condition of being overworked, no one knew when he would wake up. It could be the next day, or it could be never. My heart sank. He had saved me, after all, and I should visit him. The scent of disinfectant filled my nostrils the moment I opened his room door. I stood silently for a while before walking in, and I s

I noticed the toys Adrian was hugging in his arms, and there were more by his feet. That was when I remembered how his mother had passed away. The toys were the last memories he had of his mother. I got the other teacher to leave with the child first while I packed up the toys and followed behind. I promised the child that I would bring every toy back to the orphanage for him. After they left, I quickly grabbed a sack to pack up all the days, but just as I was about to leave with the toy sack, the windows were suddenly broken with a crash from the landslide.Time seemed to come to a standstill as fear overcame me. All I could see was the turbid, sticky mud with broken wood and rocks mixed into it. The rumbling could be heard across the windowsill, and it looked like the mouth of hell had opened as the rotting smell of soil filled my nostrils, suffocating me.My mind went blank, and it felt like every bone in my body had been plucked out of me as I fell limply to the ground. All I

There was no sorrow or agitation, and even my tone was calm, but my attitude was like a sharp knife stabbing into Adrian's heart. He stumbled a few steps backward, and his back slammed onto the car, but the pain from it could not wake him from his numbness. Why did he come looking for me? It was because he wanted to find out the reason why I would suddenly leave him without saying goodbye, and why everyone was stopping him from looking for her. Most importantly, he wanted to ask if I still loved him, but he found himself unable to ask the question, no matter how hard he tried. It took a long time before Adrian finally said, "I want to take you home."Adrian started to explain to me how he found out Cecelia's true colors and how he took care of her and their daughter. He explained his and the committee's regret and told me how he went mad and almost broke down trying to find me.I clenched my phone, trying my best to stop trembling. I felt no joy nor sorrow, but the truth had com

The inspection and negotiations were a success. Adrian agreed to fund one million annually to the orphanage starting the next month, so that all the orphans could finish university without a glitch. The contract was quickly signed, and the director and accompanying teacher invited everyone enthusiastically to the orphanage's newly built canteen for a meal.Adrian was hesitant along the way until Sofia mentioned me. "Mr. Colombo, are you trying to ask about Ella?" Adrian's eyes lit up, but before he said anything, Sofia continued, "Ella did mention you to me, and I do know where she is, but she won't see you."He clenched his fingers, and his nails dug deep into his sharp skin. The sharp pain from it was nothing compared to the horrible pain in his heart. It was exactly what Salvatori had told him before, and Adrian could not understand why I would refuse to see him when I loved him so much.Sofia seemed to know what was in Adrian's mind as she looked at the distant foggy peak while
