Chapter 6

Author: Tiptik
I stood at the door, drenched, when I heard Cecelia's voice coming from the living room. "Adrian, our little princess is making a fuss again. She can't stop crying…" Cecelia sounded a little upset. "I can't cajole her on my own. Can you help me with her? Don't worry, I won't let Ella find out about what happened tonight…"

It felt like every cell in my body froze as I stood stunned at the door.

Cecelia was in a silk sleeping robe in the living room. Her collar was loose, and her hair fell all over her shoulders. I watched as Adrian stood up to walk toward Cecelia's bedroom. After that, familiar panting could be heard coming from inside the room.

I could no longer take it as I turned and ran into the rain. I felt the rain wash all over me, but I did not feel cold at all.

My mind was filled with memories of the first time we slept together. Adrian had treated me with great care and tenderness, and made me feel treasured. He had whispered huskily into my ear, making a vow to me, "You're my first woman, Ella, and you'll be my last…"

Now, he was with another woman in the room. It hurt so much, and the pain felt worse than when I was struck by a gunstock. I crouched in the rain until my legs were numb, but I waited until every light in the villa had been turned off before I stumbled back in a daze to the villa, and I found myself a random empty room to go to sleep in.

When midnight came, I was overcome with a sudden and high fever. While I drifted in and out of consciousness, I heard Adrian's low, gentle voice from the main bedroom. He was humming an ancient Imano bedtime song to comfort his child.

Yes, Adrian was giving prenatal education to the baby inside Cecelia's belly, which was an intimate act between family members. It was just like how he used to promise me—"When we have our own child, I'll sing them to sleep every night."

I had no idea how much time had passed when I heard someone calling out to me. "Ella? Ella?" I tried my best to open my eyes, and I saw Adrian next to my bed with some medicine.

"Why are you burning up…" He felt my forehead worriedly and was gentle with me, just like he once was before.

However, the moment Adrian came near to me, I was reminded of what I had seen not long ago and I turned away from him. I refused to let him touch me.

"The medicine and water are right next to you, Ella." He paused before saying with difficulty, "Cecelia's sick and pregnant, and my daughter needs someone to look after her, which is why I brought her back to the villa, and let them have the main bedroom…

"You should stay here for a few days and don't leave the room, in case… In case you spread your virus to them. I'll lock your room from the outside, and the butler will deliver your food and medicine."

Before I could reply, he left the room quickly, almost like he was escaping, to return to taking care of Cecelia and their children. When I heard the clacking of the lock, my tears started falling. My life felt like a joke.

I used to be his most treasured person, but I had become a dangerous item that had to be locked up.

No one delivered me water and food on time for the next few days, and I suspected this was Cecelia's order. My fever still had not subsided, and I was constantly dizzy. It did not help that I was constantly hearing happy laughter coming from outside the door.

Adrian and Cecelia would watch classic romance in the family home theatre, the same ones he used to watch with me all the time. They would have candlelight dinners in the dining room, which was the same surprise he used to prepare for me every month by cooking for me.

They even started discussing the name of their future child, just like how he used to hold me in his arms while saying softly into my ears, "Ella, if we have a boy, let's call him Marcelo, and if it's a girl, Isabella. What do you think?"

His daughter with Cecelia was called Bianca, while the unborn baby boy in Cecelia's belly was called Dante. I curled up in bed while biting hard on the corner of the blanket to make sure I did not make a sound when I was sobbing.

My fever took three days to finally subside. The day I walked out of the room was the day Cecelia's daughter was inducted officially into the family. The ceremony was held at Colombo Villa, on the field surrounded by oak trees.

A bonfire was burning brightly as the delicious smell of barbecue filled the air. The atmosphere was lively as the Colombo family members enjoyed red wine in the celebration.

Salvatori and several other committee members were all smiles as they carried Bianca in their arms while giving her their best wishes. Bianca was gifted mountains of exquisite accessories and expensive toys.

"This is for Cecelia, Adrian." Salvatori smiled as he passed a wooden box to Adrian. Inside was a ring with a huge ruby on it. It was the family heirloom of the Colombo family. "This is to thank her for giving the Colombo family a healthy descendant."

Adrian accepted the ring, and he put it on Cecelia's finger while saying softly, "Thank you for everything." Cecelia leaned into his arms shyly, and their interaction made it look like a picture-perfect moment for the family of three.

All of the guests crowded around the child, while heaping praises on her.

"Listen to how bright her crying is. She's going to grow up to be the pride of the family!"

"Bianca's eyes look just like Cecelia's! Only an Imano woman would have such features."

"Here's to the Colombo family's never-ending prosperity!"

[I'm sorry, Ella. I know you've suffered a lot in the past years, but all I could do was beg you to hold on. [I initially planned to take care of Cecelia and sleep with her so she could quickly have a baby and we could finally be free, but when my daughter was born, I couldn't bear leaving her behind. She's my first child, after all, and it hurts me to think how she won't see her father again. I started to give in and agreed to spend more time with my daughter.[After that, the committee felt like a daughter wasn't enough, and they wanted me to have a son with her. She pretended that she wanted to help me, and she convinced me to sleep with her again after giving birth. I gave in again. [I felt guilty when this woman did so much for me without asking for anything and sacrificing her health, and I wanted to treat her better while I could.[However, my guilt and kindness toward her ended up hurting you so badly that you decided to leave without looking back. I listened quietly but said nothing. When Salvatori finally looked at me hopefully after he was done speaking, I started to say, "I won't forgive you for what you did to me, but I won't hate you either. I have my life to live, and I can't be wasting my time on this."Salvatori was silent for a long time after hearing what I said. He gave a long sigh in the end and took out a diary I instantly recognized. It was the first present I had given Adrian with the money I earned from working part-time when we first got together.Adrian was so happy then and said he would use it well and jot down everything about us in there for our children to read in the future. He wanted our children to know how much their parents loved each other."After you left, Adrian became a little crazy. He would scribble in this diary every day, but I have no idea what he's written in there. On the day he found you, he said he wanted you to read the diary once he brought you back, but now, he… I took the liberty o

Adrian and I soon boarded the helicopter, which took us to the nearest hospital. Medical personnel immediately moved Adrian onto a stretcher and straight into surgery. The door was closed behind them as I signed documents and pressed my thumbprint for some papers.I felt dizzy as I completed the procedure under the doctor's instructions, and after everything was done, I could not take it anymore. Everything went black, and I fell to the ground."Help! Someone fainted here!"It was the next day when I woke up. The nurses told me Adrian's surgery was a success, and he had been transferred to a normal ward. Unfortunately, he had lost too much blood, and due to his long-term condition of being overworked, no one knew when he would wake up. It could be the next day, or it could be never. My heart sank. He had saved me, after all, and I should visit him. The scent of disinfectant filled my nostrils the moment I opened his room door. I stood silently for a while before walking in, and I s

I noticed the toys Adrian was hugging in his arms, and there were more by his feet. That was when I remembered how his mother had passed away. The toys were the last memories he had of his mother. I got the other teacher to leave with the child first while I packed up the toys and followed behind. I promised the child that I would bring every toy back to the orphanage for him. After they left, I quickly grabbed a sack to pack up all the days, but just as I was about to leave with the toy sack, the windows were suddenly broken with a crash from the landslide.Time seemed to come to a standstill as fear overcame me. All I could see was the turbid, sticky mud with broken wood and rocks mixed into it. The rumbling could be heard across the windowsill, and it looked like the mouth of hell had opened as the rotting smell of soil filled my nostrils, suffocating me.My mind went blank, and it felt like every bone in my body had been plucked out of me as I fell limply to the ground. All I

There was no sorrow or agitation, and even my tone was calm, but my attitude was like a sharp knife stabbing into Adrian's heart. He stumbled a few steps backward, and his back slammed onto the car, but the pain from it could not wake him from his numbness. Why did he come looking for me? It was because he wanted to find out the reason why I would suddenly leave him without saying goodbye, and why everyone was stopping him from looking for her. Most importantly, he wanted to ask if I still loved him, but he found himself unable to ask the question, no matter how hard he tried. It took a long time before Adrian finally said, "I want to take you home."Adrian started to explain to me how he found out Cecelia's true colors and how he took care of her and their daughter. He explained his and the committee's regret and told me how he went mad and almost broke down trying to find me.I clenched my phone, trying my best to stop trembling. I felt no joy nor sorrow, but the truth had com

The inspection and negotiations were a success. Adrian agreed to fund one million annually to the orphanage starting the next month, so that all the orphans could finish university without a glitch. The contract was quickly signed, and the director and accompanying teacher invited everyone enthusiastically to the orphanage's newly built canteen for a meal.Adrian was hesitant along the way until Sofia mentioned me. "Mr. Colombo, are you trying to ask about Ella?" Adrian's eyes lit up, but before he said anything, Sofia continued, "Ella did mention you to me, and I do know where she is, but she won't see you."He clenched his fingers, and his nails dug deep into his sharp skin. The sharp pain from it was nothing compared to the horrible pain in his heart. It was exactly what Salvatori had told him before, and Adrian could not understand why I would refuse to see him when I loved him so much.Sofia seemed to know what was in Adrian's mind as she looked at the distant foggy peak while
