โDo me a favor and use the door,โ Antonio muttered, resuming what he was doing. Grinch raised both hands in mock surrender but didnโt leave. โAlways remember the rule: donโt love what you canโt protect.โ Antonio took a long pause, staring at nothing. โYou are such an annoying jerk.โ Grinch gave a short, humorless laugh. โYeah? Jerky enough to be her executioner?โ Antonioโs eyes flickeredโdark, conflicted, dangerous. He inhaled sharply for a full, dangerous second. Then he leaned closerโ menacing enough that Grinch felt the rage on his skin. Antonioโs fingers curled into Grinchโs collar and squeezed. โGrinch,โ he murmured, voice rough and strained, โdonโt make me do something I shouldnโt.โ For a moment, neither of them moved. Then Grinch swallowed hard and gently pried Antonioโs hand off his collar. โForfeit whatever youโre doing with her,โ he warned, barely keeping his voice level โYou can also be called up to be her executioner. The Don knows no relationship.โ Antonio tore his gaze away and walked toward the door โ looking like a man trying very hard not to feel something. ---- Somewhere in Nevena's house that morning, Junior smeared white powder over his face. Ready. โBestie!โ he called โIโm going to the dining table โ get ready quickโ Nevena didn't answer, only the sound of the hand shower splashing against the bathroom tiles. She was lost in a train of thought, her mind replaying last night in dizzy loops. The stone-cold man from the last afternoon had melted into an obsessed, breathless psychopath in the night. Nevena instinctively pressed her fingers to her lip, and the memory of his soft, passionate kiss replayed, weakening her knee. She finally extinguished the shower and dried up. Stepping into her room, his voice cut through like scissors. โDo you always spend that long in the shower?โ โMr. Hunt?โ her pulse fluttered. All cladded in black, he stood at the doorway, one hand on the frame, the other tucked in his pocket. "I didn't hear the doorbell ringโ She said softly. โWhen did you arrive?โ โIt's been a while" he breathed, bolting the door and pivoting toward her. "Junior already gave me a tour around the house" Nevena's eyes dropped to the floor, her cheeks heating. โHeโs always hyperactive when it comes to you" She lifted her gaze to avoid awkwardnessโonly to find Antonio already in front of her. His hand came up, and her heart pounded against her rib, but he stopped just short of her cheek, plucking away a stray strand of hair. โGood morning" he whispered softly, tracing out her lips with his eyes but not going beyond that. โOhโ morningโ she stuttered like she had been expecting โaching, for something else. โI should go,โ Antonio rasped. Her lips parted in protest, but Antonio leaned in first, before she could speak and kissed her. Soft and slow. Almost at the same time, a small, impatient knock landed at the door. They pulled back, laughing under their breath. โBuddy, I know you're in there" Junior cried, pounding harder. โI knew heโd show up,โ Antonio chuckled, patting Nevena's cheek softly before rushing to open the door. She countenance dropped, already feeling the absence of his warmth. โHey, champ,โ Antonio whispered, scooping Junior easily into his arms, before he senses something. โI told you I was coming.โ โBut you wasted a lot of time,โ Junior complained, leaning to look behind himโbut Nevena stepped back on instinct. He let out a conflicted exhale at the empty room โLet's go. I even wonder why you locked the door. Bestie's still bathing.โ Antonio avoided questions related to why he locked the door as they headed to the living room. Nevena followed after some minutes, dressed in shorts and blouse. โFinallyโsheโs done bathing,โ Junior announced as soon as he saw her. Antonio straightened and looked, soft and charismatic defined each step she took. He drooled her like she was the first warm light heโd seen after years underwater, โSorry for keeping you guys waitingโ she apologized, standing by the table. โNot at all," Antonio smirked, pulling out a chair for her. Nevena sat down, her fingers brushing the tableโs edge, and he gently pushed the chair in. She laid out the plates and began serving the meal, accidentally leaning closeโ such that Antonio could smell her shampoo, and it broke his restraint. His hand moved on its own, hovering beside her waist, but he stopped it mid-air with visible effort. โDonโt do that,โ he whispered, voice hoarse. Junior turned to him while Nevena paused mid-air with the spoon of beans. Surprised. โYou don't like beans?โ the little boy asked softly. Antonio nodded, and Junior's gaze drifted away. โMe too โ but bestie always insistโ He didnโt notice beyond that, but Nevena definitely did. It wasnโt beans but Antonio was losing restraint. She dropped the spoon โ sank back and they started eating. Now he tried focusing on anything, not her tanned legs crossed under the table โ but each time she leaned forward to cut Juniorโs pancake, his breath hitched. The short revealed too much, at least for a man trying to pretend he wasnโt falling apart inside. โFuck" he breathed, knuckles whitening from suppressed impulse. All through breakfast Junior rambled about some topics, and Antonio nodded along without even hearing a single word. When they were finally done eating, Junior hopped off his chair. โBestie! Hurry โ letโs go!โ He ran to the door before either adult could answer. Nevena smiled, clearing the table. โGive me some minutes, I will do the dishes and grab my bagโ Antonioโs eyes followed her movement like a man tracking the thing that could destroy him until she was out of sight. Relieved breath left him in one harsh exhale and he scooted his chair back one inch. Standing. Nevena barreled into the room after some minutes with her purse and Junior's backpack, โLet's go guys โ I'm ready" "Where exactly are you going?โ Antonio cleared his throat. Confused. Junior and Nevena paused and locked gaze at him. โCome onโ Antonio nearly choked on his own heartbeat. โYou guys never mentioned about going outโ Junior dragged a hand down his face dramatically. โWho was here with us all along?โ๐๐๐๐ข๐โ๐ฌ ๐๐๐ฆ๐๐ฌ๐ข๐ฌยฐยฐยฐThe holding room was grey and quiet. Breanna sat with her hands folded. Back straight. Eyes on the door. She found it hard to sleep or eat. She had always been the one to lock people here, but now this feeling of being locked was overwhelming. The waiting. The weight. She thought of who to reach out to, but none. The panel was obviously trying to bury her, so it was pointless. The door opened, and a guard stepped in. "Ma'am. You have a visitor."Breanna didn't move. She still wedged her tough personality. "Who?"The guard didn't answer. He just stepped aside. And in walked a woman Breanna didn't recognize. Sharp suit. Carrying a leather folder. No smile."Detective Stewart," the woman said. "My name is Elena Vargas. I'm here to escort you out."Breanna's heart stopped. "Is the hearing scheduled today?""Your hearing has been adjourned indefinitely. All charges pending review." Elena opened the folder, showed her the stamp. "You're free to go."Breanna d

Sophia waited. Then she pulled Nevena close to her chest and consoled her. They just stayed there while the morning light crawled across the floor."I won't scold ever again. Okay?"Nevena swallowed. Tried to speak. Nothing came out. Sophia didn't push. Finally, her voice emergedโcracked, raw. "It's not that. We went to Antonio."Sophia went still. "Antonio? That's reckless.""Junior took me. He spoke some language I didn't understand and paid the driver with words." Nevena laughed onceโhollow. "He had Antonio's personal contact card.""That boy is going to put someone in trouble one day." Sophia seethed."He just wanted to tell his buddy that his mother was in trouble and ask for help.""I bet Antonio wouldn't pay an ear.""He said yes." Nevena sat up. "But there's a condition.""I know it." So

"Be the man who gave his buddy a contact card and told him to call if he ever needed you."Antonio exhaled slowly, controlledโ and dropped his hand. He stepped back. Just one step and turned away from her.He walked to the decanter. Poured two fingers of whiskey and drank it standing, staring at the drawn curtains."She arrested me, put me in cuffs," he said. "And dragged me to court in front of my own men. Made a spectacle.""She also did the same with me. I respected it." Nevena cut in."Forgive meโbut I'm not that merciful." Antonio obliged."I don't mean you forgive her. But she's facing the panel alone. They're going to bury her."Antonio set the glass down. "You think I can stop that?" He turned. "I'm not a politician, Tourist. I don't own judges. I own casinos and hotel contracts and a few people who owe me favors.""But you know people who know people." Nevena pressed calmly. "That boy gave

The lock clicked."Mr. Hunt's private waiting room," he announced, stepping aside. "He'll be informed of your presence immediately upon arrival."Nevena walked in without thanking him.Junior followed, briefcase in hand. The door closed behind themโsoft, final. The room was dressed in glamour. Deep leather chairs. A decanter on a side table. Heavy curtains drawn against the morning. One door and no telephone.Nevena stood in the center, arms crossed, staring at him. The suit. The briefcase. The contact card. For a split second, he looked like a miniature of Antonio."How do you even have that card?"Junior touched his breast pocket. "Buddy gave it to me after I met him about your court case. Told me if I ever needed himโreally needed himโto call, not to run to his house at midnight."
๐๐๐๐ข๐โ๐ฌ ๐๐๐ฆ๐๐ฌ๐ข๐ฌยฐยฐยฐOutside smelled of stale earth and cold wind. Nevena had asked twice where they were going. Junior hadn't answered either time, he just led her to the road and flagged down a cab.The driverโa thick-necked man with tired eyesโglanced at them. "Where to?"Junior leaned forward and switched languages like flipping a knife. "La casa de mi madre. El barrio viejo. Santa Fe." The driver's eyes flicked to Nevena, then back to Junior. A beat. A slow nod."ยฟSola la casa?""Sรญ. Ella no necesita saber la direcciรณn."The driver grunted and clicked the lock. Junior reached for the door but Nevena's hand tightened on his shoulder. "What did you say to him?" Her pulse climbed. "I have a bad feeling.""Trust me." Junior turned at her. "We aren't getting into trouble."Nevena stared back. This wasn't the boy who'd asked for crayons yesterday.Trusting his guideline, she settled into the cab with him. The driver dropped the meter and they pulled away from the curb. Ne

You look moodyโJunior tilted his head at Sophia then went back to his book, uninterested. โCan I see you out for a few minutes?โ Sophia beckoned on Nevena.Nevena gave a curt nod, understanding that whatever it was, wasn't for Junior. She singled out a word problem and instructed Junior to practice with while she was gone.In the enclosure of Sophia's room, Sophia summarizes the trouble Breanna was in and the disturbing information she got about the possible outcome from a colleague.โMaybe we should call her up?โ Nevena suggested.Sophia hesitatesโ a phone call during a panel hearing could go south, but Nevena's persuasion won.
