Chapter 27| First Date

"Clark, it's okay. I'll take care of it."

"Nah! I'm okay, don't mind me. I just want to help you," he protested and smiled tiredly.

I took a deep breath at this awkwardness. I had been telling him lately to just sit there on the chair but he didn't want to follow me. Instead, he continued to help me do the laundry; the neighbor's laundry that I accepted to be precise.

For more than half an hour he was still fetching water in the well. He was fetching while I was rinsing the clothes. His sweat was dripping from his forehead down to his neck. We were under the heat of the afternoon sun.

"Clark, sit down under the tree. The sunlight might burn your skin. It's okay to not help—"

He cut me off from what I was going to say.

"Angela..." he uttered weakly. He stopped pumping the well and looked straight into my eyes.
