THE STIFF BONE OF MY CORSET DUG INTO MY SIDES stifling my breath as the carriage galloped across pebbles on the road.

“Just breathe. Everything will be fine,” Kezira smiled at me reassuringly.

But everything was far from fine.

I am the shadow princess.

Revered and feared across the three kingdoms for my fighting skills and yet, here I am. On my way to Revillon.

Collins would laugh if he could see me now. Powerful Princess Arielle, reduced to Lady Marissa. Nothing more than an air-headed noble lady of the Revillon court.

“This dress is entirely too tight,” I hissed in irritation as I flapped the frilly fan I had been given  and tried to breathe in some air..

Somebody had burned incense in here to make it smell nice perhaps, but all it made me was sick, vehemently sick.

“The dress is perfect. And you look a vision.

Look at you! Your long blonde hair dyed black, your thick Revillon dress, even the headscarf! you look nothing like a princess of Gaham,” She paused with a pout.

“A shame though that there was nothing we could do about your eyes,”

I tried to ignore Kezira as I flapped the fan harder.

It didn’t matter to me that my eyes couldn’t be changed. In fact, I loved my eyes.

Startling green, lined with grey, it was distinctly different from the deep brown both my parents possessed.

It was a gift. As much a weapon as the blades I had learned to use since I was a child.

Let’s just get this over with,” I grounded out.

Kezira sighed. “A ruler’s true wisdom lies in knowing when to back down,”

“So you agree as well that I should flee like some scared animal?”

The very notion was ridiculous to me. The details of my trip were classified information but I told Kezira because I trusted her.

She wasn’t just my ladiesmaid but my bestfriend. My soul sister even, not like she was acting like it right now.

“I just…,” She started in a patronizing voice. “I think the Queen showed great wisdom in ensuring your safety,”

“Of course you do,” I muttered under my breath as I fluttered my fan.

“Zura,” she whispered softly but I was done with the conversation.

“This place is hot,” I flapped my fan harder and hissed as the stifling air in the carriage threatened to suffocate me.

“Really?” Kezira blinked in surprise but I could barely focus on her as I pulled at the hairpin holding my scarf and flung the offending fabric far from me.

“Hey! You shouldn’t take that off. Honor to the gods—“

“Oh please!” I snapped in irritation. “Living in Revillon doesn’t mean I’ll become one of them,”

I shook my long hair down from its tight bun as Kezira whispered. “The headscarf symbolizes honor,”

I knew that. Just like I knew the people of Revillon were superstitious and still believed in IFtar.

The magical gift of the gods.

It’s all really ridiculous. The way they tell the story of the gods differently.

In Gaham, we remember the gods for the wicked, selfish, and powerful ancients they were.

But the Revillionians worship them.

Painting pictures of the war as a sacred thing, they still believed in IFtar bestowed by the gods.

Fools, the lot of them.

Their gods have abandoned them but they don't know it yet.

“Kezira stop the carriage,” I demanded suddenly as I realized the stupid fan couldn’t bring me more air.

“What?” She blinked in surprise. “No. Her majesty ordered—“

A sense of urgency seemed to press against my lungs making me gasp for breath.

“Stop the carriage NOW!”

I could feel it. Phantom hands crawling down my spine, pressing against my brain.

A small voice like the chiming of temple bells. It sang to me.

“Kezira stop the carriage now!” My breaths came in short spurts. The smell of incense drowning me.

“I can’t just stop the carriage. The Queen commanded…”

Her words trailed off into a buzz as my vision swam and pain exploded behind my eyes.

I screamed in pain. Clutching my head as the sound of the bells increased.

My throat felt raw. Raw from screaming, as I tasted the incense on my tongue.

“Your Highness! Your Highness!!”

“Azura!!”

Kezira seemed to be calling out to me in a panicked voice as I vaguely registered falling from my carriage seat.

My eyes were shut and I tried to grip her hand as a cold feeling and a small voice accompanied the bells.

“Stop…” it crooned with a sense of foreboding.

I tried to open my lips. To yell and cry or beg Kezira to stop the carriage. But my lips felt like lead. Too heavy to part.

The ringing came to a sudden halt and I gasped immediately, my eyes flinging open.

“Arielle! What is it? Are you okay?” Kezira looked frightened. She knelt on the floor of the carriage, my head cradled in her lap as her headscarf fell out of place.

Her cheeks were stained with tears and I felt a cold trickle of blood drip from my nose.

My hands clutched her arms fearfully and I was about to ask again that she stop the carriage when that strange voice filled my head again.

“TOO LATE…”

That was the last thing I heard before our carriage crashed into something with a loud thud and the world went black.

Every nerve in my body was alert and somehow I could tell we had been attacked.

I FELT THE HARD GRAVEL PRICKING MY SKIN before I heard the noises. The gruff voices of strange men laughing and jeering, the injured horses whining helplessly,  Kezira screaming in a voice so loud,  it pierced my muddled brain.

But I couldn't ask her to stop, I couldn't even move to look at her properly not when every cell in my body hurt.

The voices of the men grew louder as they jeered and mocked amongst themselves, with their distinct accents.

Braavasi.

As a soldier in my father’s army, I had negotiated with some of them and could recognize their accents anywhere.

The Braavasi belong to none of the three kingdoms but trade with all. They’re desert pirates who rob highway travelers and disturb outskirt villages.

Kezira’s screaming came to an abrupt stop and fear thundered through me. My vision was blurry and I vaguely made out a pair of black boots walk towards me.

"Oi, there's one here that's alive!"

That was the last thing I heard before I blacked out again.

  • Maid For Me   Chapter 18

Chapter 18I sighed in satisfaction as I stepped back to survey my work. It was impressive how much I had learned in the last few weeks to protect my cover.Last week, I learned to make a bed properly, yesterday, I learned how to sweep and cleaned and today, I finally figured out how to old clothes. To say I was proud of myself is an understatement.Working for Prince Scott had surprisingly not been too bad so far. Yes, the man still made me want to scratch my eyeballs out and chuck a pillow at his head every time he opened his mouth but if I’m being honest. He wasn’t so bad once he realized he couldn’t get rid of me by overworking me.I whistled happily to myself as I picked up the clothes I had folded and put them away neatly in his closet. Once I was done, I stood staring at the room.Everything was neat and clean, for the first time in a long time, I had finished my work on time.Scott wasn’t in the room presently. He had gone to yet another meeting with the kind, probably to bad

  • Maid For Me   Chapter 17

Chapter 17I TAKE THAT BACK.He is a bad person. A very bad person. I paused in the closet for a minute to catch my breath.“Maid! Faster!” Prince Scott yelled from the room.I rolled my eyes and swore under my breath. It was just 10 AM yet my limbs were trembling from all the running around he had made me do.“I’m coming! And my name is not Maid!” I yelled back as I staggered under the mountain of clothes he had requested and made my way into the bedroom. I was sleeping peacefully this morning. The bell in my bedroom rang by 5:30 AM. At first I had ignored it and gone back to bed but then Neema had come banging on my door to yell at me for not answering my master and I had groggily stood up, weaved my hair, and gone up to answer Scott. For someone who didn’t seem pleased about me serving him, he was enthusiastic about making me run around.First, he had me assist him while he trained in the grounds outside. The cold Revillionain morning air had bitten at my face and rattled me unti

  • Maid For Me   Chapter 16

Chapter 16“I’m so sorry your majesty, I I, It was,” I stammered in panic as I bowed my head deeply in apology. My heart pounded loudly as the extremities of my crime dawned on me. Some of the nobles cried in outrage and I knew they would surely have torn me apart if they could,“Have you gone mad girl?” The king asked me affronted as he stood up from his seat and began to observe the damage I had done to his clothing.“I deeply apologize your majesty. I didn’t mean to, the wine. It had pineapples,” I whimpered as I began to discreetly survey just how men I would have to take down if it came down to the worst.“Pineapples! You destroyed my dinner for pineapples?!” The king yelled enraged.I began to shake my head vigorously as I tried to backtrack and say something to salvage the situation.“It was me,” Prince Scott whispered softly in disbelief.“What?” The king asked in confusion.“She, the girl knocked the glass because of me your majesty. I am allergic to pineapples,” Prince Scot

  • Maid For Me   chapter 15

CHAPTER 15“Don’t just stand there, serve them!” Vianna hissed at me as she shoved me out of my reverie and went past me to serve the nobles.I blinked quickly and followed her lead. The better part of the evening was spent with us serving nobles, refilling glasses, and attending to the whimpering noble women trying to catch Prince Scott’s attention. It was hilarious actually.I had watched Lady Trowper cough and cry more times in this single meal than she had over the weeks I had been attending to them. She would put a spoonful of food in her mouth and then proceed to cry or cough until Scott asked about her well-being.Some of the other ladies tried to win him over by barely picking t their food. I understood why he had been reluctant to eat with the rest of the nobles before, his presence almost turned the dining room to a circus.“I am having an incredible amount of fun tonight,” Vivi whispered to me as she inclined her head in Lady Trowper’s direction.I snorted and almost spill

Maid for me chapter 14 The sudden pain caused me to lose my balance and I swooned. “Mari! Are you okay?” Tara exclaimed in shock and concern. I blinked rapidly trying to chase away the hot headache that had enveloped my skull. “Hmm, yes. I’m fine,” I whispered to her reassuringly. “Liar, you can’t even stand upright,” One of the maids said worriedly. I looked around and realized that they had seized their conversation and were all crowded around me. I gripped Tara’s hand tightly, as she helped me stand upright. “I think you better go lie down,” Tara said softly. I frowned at her and looked at my uniform I was still washing. “I’m not done here yet,” I explained to her. “Leave it. Just follow Julie. I’ll take care of it,” Just the thought of spending a few minutes in bed, sounded incredibly pleasant and gave me great joy. I flashed Tara a grateful smile and let go of her hand so I could hold on to the maid call

  • Maid For Me   Chapter 13

Chapter 13I SPENT THE next few days following a routine schedule and getting to know my way about the palace. At first, Neema had been placed on breakfast duty in the kitchen but within a few hours, it became apparent that I had no idea what I was doing.I had cut myself, burnt my fingers, broken dishes, and started a small fire. It was obvious I didn't know my way around the kitchen.Next, I had been put on cleaning duty. That didn't go down too well either. I could never tell the difference between the cleaning agents and would constantly substitute soap for bleach.Neema had received thousands of complains from the maids made to work with me and the occupants of the rooms I had cleaned. Finally in frustration, she had paired me with a wiry looming girl called Vianna and made me assist the girl.Vianna was a high ranking maid. She had direct access to the king's breakfast table. And while my fake limp made me slow, the one job I was able to do properly was balance stacks and stac

Chapter 12I knew I was in big big trouble as I stared at him.He was sculpted. From my spot, I couldn’t help but admire every lean line and toned muscles that seemed to make up this incredible human. The prince stared at me in absolute shock and blinked rapidly like he was trying to clear his thought

  • Maid For Me   Chapter 11

Chapter 11I SIGHED IN IRRITATION, a bit self-conscious about my lack of uniform.Apparently, a new prince was in the palace. I don't know why this was such a big deal, at home we used to host several royal ambassadors and even some meters of the royal family. But in a way, I understand their reasoning

NEEMA TOOK ME down a corridor to a series of rooms that I was sure belonged to the servants. We stopped in front of one of the wooden doors and she brought out a ring of keys from within the folds of her dress.I watched her carefully as she unlocked the room door and handed the key over to me.She ob

  • Maid For Me   Chapter 9

THE DOOR TO that dark room opened the next day, at least I think it was the next day, I wouldn't know. Since Madam Claire has decided I was a bad investment, her soldiers didn't bother wasting her food on me.It was so cold, alone in my thin strip of a dress, I was freezing and my teeth were chatteri
