He picked up on the second ring, his breath hitching slightly as if he had been waiting for my call. "The photographs," I said into the phone. “You found them," he whispered. "who put them there?" I pressed, my fingers digging hard into the carpet. "Who slipped them into my wardrobe? Don't lie to me." He didn't answer that directly. Instead, his voice dropped, turning low and cautious. "Are you somewhere you can talk safely? Is anyone nearby?” I pulled my knees tighter against my chest, sitting on the floor of my room with my back pressed into the solid frame of the bed. "Yes," I said, a tremor running through my jaw. "Talk." He was quiet for a long moment. "What do you know about your mother's family, Sapphire?" he asked carefully.
