Sapphire’s POV

I blinked

Again

Again and again… I blinked until the words stopped echoing in my head. My ears were working just fine but my insides seem to be in a twist, doubting the words papa had said. “One of you needs to go speak to Alessandro.”

The words echoed again and in that minute, I knew papa will always be papa. Plotting, scheming and using people to get what he wants.

I didn’t like Alessandro. He was the kind of man you wish to never come across. Now we had to decide who would go into his lion’s den with open arms.

My lips parted slightly, but words failed to come out. Unlike me who froze at papa’s words, Sophia didn’t flinch, she just stared at papa. She would do anything to get papa out of here and retain his old glory, Sophia can go miles for papa but I don’t think I can. I can only try but it won’t be enough for either Sophia or papa.

“I don’t think….”

I tried to speak but papa cuts me off “I don’t need you to think Phi, all I need is action. Decide which one of you will go to Alessandro and get the plans in progress” he said, staring directly at Sophia.

I was lost, Sophia knew about the plans but I didn’t.

“Time’s up.” The guard’s knuckle rapped against the door, cutting our little family moment short.

sophia and I immediately stood up while papa just stared at us as we made our way out.

***********

“I will do it”

Sophia stated blankly once we got inside the car. I knew she would, I knew she wouldn’t want to impose it on me and I also knew that she would do anything to please papa but I didn’t think it would be that easy for her to make a decision.

I jerked my head towards her “we are talking about Alessandro..”

“What? Now you think I am deaf, I clearly heard papa mention his name and one of us needs to to be bold” she replied.

I could not come up with a perfect response, I think maybe it was because I knew that Sophia was right or maybe I was a bit of a chicken to actually have think of myself being on the same table as him.

The rest of the car ride ended up in silence. Sophia drove like she was being chased by something. From time to time, I watched her expression from the sides and even though she had a perfectly relaxed face, her lips seemed to be out of control but not a word left her mouth.

“I don’t think speaking to Alessandro is the only option here…” I said softly, my voice was barely above a whisper but I knew Sophia heard me.

“We do not have too many options” she spat, if there was anything I could describe her tone as.. it would be that of total dismissal “we barely have enough time to even explore any other options, phi” she said again.

My lips twisted, I hated the fact that she never actually thinks things through before doing them when it came to papa. Alessandro isn’t a good man and the rumours I have heard about him weren’t good, I would have used that as a topic right now but Sophia is going to throw it under the bus because she doesn’t think rumours are true.

“So whatever papa says then” I whispered

We were barely five minutes away from the house and I could not wait to finally get down from the vehicle. Sophia is my twin but she makes the air around her a little bit stuffy and even though I love her, I cannot say for sure but our life goals are always clashing making it seem like we will never actually be in sync.

We finally got to the mansion. Sophia pulled by the driveway but something didn’t feel right. There was another car parked in the driveway, a sleek black car.

Sophia stared at me almost the same time I took a glance at her for clarification. Her eyes narrowed at the vehicle.

“Let’s get down” she said

We got down almost the same time. The owner of the vehicle did too, it was not a face I had seen before. He looked a little bit corporate but his physique screamed otherwise; dark shades, extremely broad shoulders like that of a body guard.

“Sapphire and Sophia Giovani?” He asked almost immediately with a smooth tone like he had rehearsed it on his way here.

Sophia cleared her throat while I just stared at him. Everyone knew about the Giovani’s estate but yes he could be asking for formalities “who is asking?” Sophia asked, her tone was in defence.

The man removed his shades, his gaze rested on the both of us. Even now that he had his shades off, he still seemed a little bit scary. “Mr Alessandro has requested your presence, tomorrow evening for dinner. Do no keep him waiting.”

He handed over a black envelope and then left even before we could raise any questions.

Sophia tore the letter open and then she read aloud “Alessandro’s estate by 7pm do not be late.”

***********

Alessandro king is not a man to be played with, I wondered why he couldn’t wait for us to reach out to him first. I wondered why papa had stared at Sophia when he mentioned plans. I wondered if the plans were already in progress and if the invite is just one bite of the plans.

“I will go alone”

Sophia said breaking me away from my train of thoughts.

Of course she would want to go alone but I can’t let her do that. “The invitation is meant for the both of us” I stated dismissing her words.

Sophia makes an attempt to walk away but then she stops “whatever happens after this, you will have yourself to blame… not me, not papa but yourself.” She said in her usual bored tone before walking away.

Sapphire’s POVI was not going to let her walk away again with no proper explanation. So instead of sulking and letting her play with my head again, I ran after her and successfully blocked her from taking any further step. “Collateral damage?”I stared at her, waiting for her to laugh in my face or tell me she hadn’t meant it. Maybe she would admit that it was one of her cryptic messages. I curled my hands into a fist, waiting for her to say it one more time. But, she still had that smile on her face and the smile grew even bigger when she noticed that my hands were curled in a fist. “I’m very sure I spoke English when I called you collateral damage.” She said, flipping her hands in the air dramatically as if she was spelling out the words to me. My chest tightened at the sound of her saying it again. “You’re not even sorry for leaving me here.”Her eyes sparkled for a bit. “Should I?” She asked. “Should I really be sorry?”Something inside me snapped that instant. “How long

  • Maid for the mafia boss   Chapter sixteen

Sapphire’s POV It has been three days since I last spoke to Alessandro, three days since we had that conversation and eight weeks since Sophia walked out the door. I haven’t heard a thing from her or even gotten an update from her concerning the release of papa. I want to extend my grace to her. But right now, I’m forced to believe that she has been aware of papa’s actions. Maybe she has been working with him, while I was being kept in the dark. Alessandro didn’t mention her in the grand scheme of things but I can’t just trust that she is oblivious right now. I hear footsteps approach me but I pay no mind to it “Miss Sophia is here.” I am quickly pulled out from my train of thoughts, when I heard the name ‘Sophia’ I must have heard wrongly. My eyes shifted from the plate in front me to the worker who had delivered the message. She was still staring at me and probably waiting for a response before she went on with her duties. “Wait” The words flew out of my

Sapphire’s POV“You knew.”The words flew out of my mouth the moment I got into Alessandro’s study. He didn’t even flinch. He remained seated behind his desk, one hand resting over an open file while his fingers lightly held a black fountain pen. When his eyes finally landed on me, they were entirely calm and unreadable, as though he had been expecting me. “I assume Thomas called,” he said in a calm tone.“Thomas?” I frowned. “Who is Thomas?” Realization hit me. I didn’t know the man’s name. Alessandro's face softened, he looked amused. My heart sank immediately, then another heatwave of realization hit me. “So it’s true.” I said, the words coming out more as a whisper.“Yes.”That single word landed on me like a physical blow. A bitter, humorless laugh escaped my lips. “I was actually hoping for it to all be a prank. I kept telling myself there had to be some other explanation.”Alessandro remained silent, his steady gaze tracking the frantic rise and fall of my chest.“You cou

Sapphire’s POV I called the burner line that had called me a few days ago, first thing the next morning. I just knew that the man would have answers to my questions or he was probably the one who planted the envelope in my closet. He picked up on the second ring, his breath hitching slightly as if he had been waiting for my call. "The photographs," I said into the phone. “You found them," he whispered. "who put them there?" I pressed, my fingers digging hard into the carpet. "Who slipped them into my wardrobe? Don't lie to me." He didn't answer that directly. Instead, his voice dropped, turning low and cautious. "Are you somewhere you can talk safely? Is anyone nearby?” I pulled my knees tighter against my chest, sitting on the floor of my room with my back pressed into the solid frame of the bed. "Yes," I said, a tremor running through my jaw. "Talk." He was quiet for a long moment. "What do you know about your mother's family, Sapphire?" he asked carefully.

  • Maid for the mafia boss   Chapter thirteen

Sapphire’s POV “I am already trapped, clearly.” — Sapphire ********* I found a brown envelope in the closet of the room I just moved into. I wasn't searching or snooping around, it was my room after all. I had carefully hunged the emerald gown in the closet and changed into a comfortable oversized t-shirt I had found in the closet. I was trying desperately to shake off the lingering feeling of Alessandro’s hand against the small of my back, a sensation that seemed branded into my very skin. This new room was far too large and I didn’t have things that could fit into it. The silence in the room felt suffocating. There were no blankets on the bed so I decided to search for one in the massive wardrobe. At least wrapping my body with something warm, would give me the comfort that I need. I reaching my arms up high to pull down a thick, heavy blanket from the very top shelf. As I tugged at the fabric, my fingers touched something stiff and out of place. A small, heavy paper

  • Maid for the mafia boss   Chapter twelve

Sapphire’s POV The silence inside the car was deafening. The blurred lights of the city streaked across the dark windowpane, but my mind was stuck on a vicious, agonizing loop, replaying the exact moment Alessandro’s deep voice had cut through the ballroom crowd. *“Sapphire is my fiancée, not a purchase, not a companion..She is my fiancée.”* The word still felt like a physical weight pressing down on my chest, suffocating me. I looked away from the window, my fingers tightly tracing the emerald fabric of my gown, trying to stop them from shaking. Just moments ago, in the dark space between our seats, his hand had found mine, it was brief and he pulled away quickly. Now, he was already back to acting completely untouched by it. He kept his dark eyes fixed on his phone, his thumb casually scrolling through notifications as if he hadn't just altered the trajectory of my entire existence. Like he was simply checking the weather. I couldn't stay quiet anymore. The anger burning
