Chapter 1:
Joye
“What the fuck is going on here.” My voice came out in nothing louder than a whisper, my lips quivering as I watched the gory sight in front of me.
My groom. The man I'd loved since university. The man whose ring was sitting on my finger right now was wrapped in another man's arms, knelt to the floor, his back arched perfectly, like he had practiced a thousand arch exercises. His supposed best man knelt behind him, stroking him from behind steadily while he moaned out loud.
For a second, my brain refused to process it. It was like watching a scene from a movie that didn't belong to my life. The room began to spin, and my head suddenly began throbbing very badly.
“My fiancé is gay. Stephen is gay?” I whispered, my hands flying to my mouth as I watched the way that was supposed to be the happiest day of my life turn into a nightmare.
Today was supposed to be my wedding day, but Stephen had showed up late to the altar and I had come here in search of him, but nothing prepared me for the very sight in front of me.
I should have closed the door the second I saw them. Instead, I stood frozen, watching my fiancé with his best man, my back against the doorframe like my legs had forgotten how to move.
Stephen was lost in it completely. I heard sounds come out of him I'd never heard before. Sounds I used to think he simply didn't have in him. All those nights I told myself he was just reserved, just tired, just not the passionate type. I believed it because I wanted to. Now I understood. It was never about me at all.
“Yes, baby, fuck me harder. Your big cock fills me up so well, I just want to cum in your face,” Stephen moaned.
He had never said anything to me during sex.
“I love you so much boy. You’re so tight, just the way I love it. Don’t give this to anyone else, and you will continue to be my naughty little boy.”
Marcus shamelessly thrust in and out of Stephen’s back hole, shining his waist, and spanking Stephen’s ass hard.
“Cum inside me baby, let me feel it. Let me suck your fucking cock afterwards.”
I didn't know how long I stood there before Marcus turned his head and saw me.
He froze first. Then Stephen followed his gaze, and his whole body went rigid.
"Joye!" He scrambled backward, grabbing for his shirt. "Joye, this isn't…I can explain…"
I didn't realize I was crying until I felt the tears drip off my chin. I quickly wiped it with the back of my palm.
"Explain what, Stephen?" My voice cracked on his name. "Explain what I just watched?"
"It's not what you think…"
"It's exactly what I think!" I shrieked.
Marcus, still catching his breath, rolled his eyes like I was the one being unreasonable. "So it is true what you always say about her," he said to Stephen, not even bothering to look ashamed. "She's overly dramatic. It's not even that deep."
"Not that deep?" I turned on him, my hand flying up before I even decided to move.
Stephen caught my wrist mid-air. I looked back to Stephen, my eyes widening.
"Don't," he said. "Don't you dare touch him."
I stared at him, stunned. In six years, Stephen had never once raised his voice to defend me. Not to his mother, not to his friends, not even to a waiter who was rude to me once at dinner. And now, of all moments, of all people, he was defending the man he'd just cheated on me with.
"You're defending him?" I yanked my hand free. "Right now? To me?"
"Joye, please." He ran both hands through his hair, panic creeping into his voice. "The wedding starts in fifteen minutes. Everyone's waiting. Can we please just…get through today, and we'll talk about this after?"
I let out a laugh that didn't sound like mine. "Talk about this after? Stephen, did you forget he was inside you five minutes ago when you're asking me to marry you in fifteen?"
"Joye…" he pleaded, taking a step forward.
“You didn’t know we only have fifteen minutes while I was searching for you, and you are here fucking another man?”
My throat felt very dry. My chest twisted painfully.
"I could cancel this whole wedding right now," I said. "Walk out there and tell two hundred people the truth."
That did it. His face went white.
"No. No, please don't do that." He grabbed both my hands now, his voice dropping into a desperate plea. "Joye, please. You know what my father will do if this wedding doesn't happen. You know what it means for the company merger. Please, I'm begging you…"
And there it was. Not I love you. Not I'm sorry. Not please don't leave me.
But please don't cost me the deal.
I looked at him, and saw him clearly for the first time in six years. He wasn't scared of losing me, he was scared of losing my father's name, my father's connections, everything that came stitched to the supposed wedding.
"You're not scared of losing me," I said quietly. "You're scared of losing what I come with."
"That's not true…"
"Don't." I pulled my hands away. "Don't lie to me twice in one day."
Marcus checked his watch, a bored expression gracing his face. "Can we hurry this along?"
I turned to him slowly. "You have some nerve."
I took steps closer to Marcus, ready to launch another attack and disfigure his face with my stiletto nails.
“Joye, please. The problem is me, not him. Just leave him out of this,” Stephen pleaded, blocking my part.
Tears streamed down my face again. “Stephen?”
Marcus rolled his eyes, grabbed his things and left without another word.
"Joye." Stephen's voice was soft now, pleading. "I know I don't deserve it, I know this is the worst thing I could ever do to you. But please, marry me today. We'll figure the rest out quietly, after. Nobody has to know anything."
I stared at him for a long moment.
Then I said, "Fine."
His shoulders dropped in relief. "Thank you. Thank you, Joye, I promise…"
"Give me your phone."
He blinked. "What?"
"Your phone, Stephen. Give it to me."
Confused but too relieved to argue, he handed it over.
"Go," I said. "Get to the altar, I'll be right behind you."
He hesitated, searching my face for something, but I gave him nothing. Eventually he nodded and hurried out, straightening his jacket as he went.
I stood alone for a second, breathing.
Then I walked back to Bella and Tamara, who were waiting with matching expressions of worry.
"Well?" Bella asked carefully. "What happened? Are we canceling?"
"No," I said, wiping the last of my tears with the back of my hand. "We're getting married."
“Thank goodness, you found him,” Bella replied, relieved.
A let out a weak smile.
We walked to the aisle together, my arm looped through my father's, the music swelling around us, two hundred faces turning to watch me glide toward the altar like nothing in the world was wrong.
Stephen stood waiting, his smile back in place, his eyes searching mine like he was hoping I'd forgiven him already.
I smiled back.
The pastor opened his book, cleared his throat, and looked out at the crowd.
"Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today…"
"Wait," I said, my voice carrying cleanly across the silent room.
The pastor paused. Stephen's smile faltered.
"Before we continue," I said, turning to face the crowd, "I have an announcement to make."
Chapter 5 JoyeThe second the doctor left the room, I grabbed Xavier's sleeve, panic clawing up my throat."Who else knows?" I asked. "Please tell me it's just us."He hesitated, and that hesitation told me everything before he even opened his mouth."Your parents were called when you collapsed. Mine too. They're on their way here now.""No, no, no." I pressed both hands over my face. "Xavier, they can't know. Not like this.""Joye…""Please." I grabbed his hand this time, desperate. "Please don't tell them. I'll do anything. I'll figure this out, I promise, just…not like this, not with them walking in and hearing it from a doctor like it's some kind of headline."He studied me for a long moment, something unreadable moving behind his eyes."This baby isn't mine," he said quietly. It wasn't a question. We both knew that for a fact. My stomach dropped. I opened my mouth, but no excuse came out, because what was there to say?"It's not," I admitted, my voice barely above a whisper. "I
Chapter 4 JoyeI woke up on a couch in an unfamiliar living room, a blanket draped over me that I didn't remember pulling on myself. My head throbbed. My mouth tasted like the champagne toast I never got to drink."You're awake."I sat up too fast, and the room tilted. Xavier stood by the window, jacket already off, sleeves rolled to his elbows, watching me with the same unreadable expression he'd worn through the entire ceremony.Again, those eyes. Strangely, they somehow brought memory of the steamy night I had with that stranger at the club. But that was impossible, right?I shook the thought off instantly."What happened?" I asked, clearing my throat."You fainted. The doctor at the courthouse said it was probably stress and low blood sugar. He said to let you rest and get you checked properly if it happens again."He was watching me now, that sense of family still resting in his gaze."Oh." I pressed a hand to my temple. "Where am I?""My house." He said it like it should have
Chapter 3 Joye"Absolutely not," I said, crossing my arms.My mother sighed, the same tired sigh she'd been giving me all week since the video of my canceled wedding had made its rounds online. "Joye, please. Just meet him. That's all we're asking.""I just left the altar two weeks ago, Mom. I'm not exactly in the mood to jump into another engagement."My father set down his newspaper, his voice firm the way it always was when his mind was already made up. "This isn't about mood, this is about damage control. Do you know what people are saying about this family right now?""I know exactly what they're saying, Dad. I was there when I said it.""Then you understand why this matters." He leaned forward. "The Andersons are one of the most respected families in the city. If you marry their son, it shows everyone that you've moved on, that you're thriving, that Stephen's little scandal didn't break you.""And if I don't want to marry a stranger just to save face?""Then the whispers contin
Chapter 2 Joye"Play it," I said to the media head standing by the screen. He hesitated, glancing at my father, who gave a small, confused nod. Then the screen behind the altar flickered to life. The first thing displayed on the screen was photos, photos of Stephen and Marcus at a hotel bar holding hands too intimately in a way that suggested more than friendship. Then a video, dated only three weeks ago, of the two of them laughing together in bed, Stephen's face turned toward the camera, unaware, completely at peace in a way I'd never once seen him with me.Gasps rippled through the congregation like wind through grass. Someone's chair scraped back, a woman near the front pressed a hand to her mouth.I reached out and took the microphone from the stunned pastor."Good afternoon, everyone," I said, my voice steadier than I felt. "Thank you all for coming today to celebrate what was supposed to be my wedding."Murmurs and whispers filled the hall. My mother's face, pale as the table
