The steady beeping of the heart monitor was what woke Marybeth up, frantic and groggy she was startled as she did not remember where she was, but after a moment her memory started to return she and her son were in a car accident, now they were in a hospital, the last news she got concerning her son was that he was in surgery and then…

Her hand went to her belly, and she stroked it sadly. Pregnant, she was pregnant, and now that her baby was gone. Her mind still could not process it, couldn't process the loss of losing something she did not know she had. She knew she couldn't stay in the ‘what could have been’ world forever, so now she decided to compartmentalize- take it one thing at a time, and her main focus now was her living, breathing son.

She looked to her right, and there on the bedside table was a small remote with a button one could press to call the attention of the nurse. She grabbed it weakly and pushed the button. After a while, a nurse walked in. He carried a clipboard

She was at the reception signing the necessary documents for the release of her son's body and paying for the hospital bills. Logan was still inaccessible- she had no phone, and the number she remembered was no longer the one he was using; she had not memorized his new one. “When will you be sending someone to come and get your son, Mrs Renfry?” The lady at the reception asked her, her tone soft with worry. “I'll have someone come before the day is over,” Marybeth responded. “Alright, ma'am. Do you have a way to get home? We could call you a cab if you need one.” The receptionist offered. Marybeth thought for a minute, and she really did not have a way to get back home. She nodded her head, “Yes please, that would be much appreciated.” “Alright then. I'll notify you when it's here. Please be patient. “ The receptionist said to her. “Okay thank you.” She continued signing. Then suddenly there was loud laughter coming down the hallway. She sighed internally. What kind of peopl

Christa woke up to Logan stroking her hair, slowly and softly. The action startled her a bit because the sight of him standing over her was not one she was used to. And then there was the expression on his face. It wasn't one she had ever seen before. It twisted his face, making him look somewhat ugly. She shivered slightly at the image that had formed in her mind. “Are you cold?” He asked her in a gentle tone. “Hmmm. No.” She yawned a bit, acting as though she'd only just woken up, “I'm not cold.” Then she asked him, “What are you doing up?” Her eyes darted to the clock on the side table, “It's 3 in the morning.” “I couldn't sleep. I wanted to make sure I kept watch over you.” He responded, looking down at her with a soft smile playing on his lips. “Aw, thank you. My hero.” She gave him a wide grin, “But seriously, go back to sleep. You standing there almost gave me a heart attack.” “Alright, alright. “ Hands raised in surrender he returned to the makeshift bed he had made for h

Mrs. Renfry?” The doctor approached her cautiously, “Is there anyone we can call? What about your husband?”“My husband?” she said wryly, then she just kept staring at her son’s body, “I don't know where he is.”“Do you have a number we could call?” He tried again. Her phone. Where was her phone? She'd forgotten her phone in his car after he threw it out. But that didn't matter because she had memorized his number a long time ago, but she didn't know if he would answer.“Yes.”“Alright, let's go to the reception so we can make the phone call.”He reached for her and she flinched away.“No, please.” She murmured, “A few more minutes with him. Please, just let me be alone with him for a moment.” She wrenched her eyes away from her son and turned them on the doctor, “Please I beg you.”The doctor stared at her for a moment before nodding his head softly, “Very well, we'll be outside waiting for you. Five minutes, that's all we can do.”“Thank you.”They walked away, the sounds of their f

Marybeth's eyes blinked awake sleepily. She lay on the bed, staring at the white, sterile ceiling, unblinking and unmoving. Took her a while to get her bearings and then bam, another flood of memories of what happened rushed through her head. The accident, her miscarriage, and… Toto. Toto was gone. Her baby was gone. Why-? How? Why would her baby be gone?Silent tears streamed down her face into her pillow. She turned to her side, went into the fetal position, and let the tears run freely. She had no desire to control her tears to try to be strong. Her son was dead. Where was Logan? Why hadn't he tried to find them? Where was her phone as well? Where was her son? When would she be allowed to see his body? He was just a body now. No longer living and breathing. She reached for the call button and pressed it repeatedly, over and over till a nurse rushed in.“Is everything okay?” The nurse said, her voice hurried and panicky.“The doc-” Marybeth’s voice was hoarse, she cleared her throa

Christa was asleep in the private room while Logan lounged on the sofa. A loud wailing down the hall woke her, and she bolted up from the bed, wide awake. “What was that?” She asked, startled. “It was probably just a patient, nothing too serious or to worry about,” Logan replied, walking over to her and helping her back into bed. “But it sounded so haunting.” she insisted, “do you think something terrible happened to them?” He sighed to himself. Why was she asking him these questions, as if he worked in the hospital? He, quite frankly, did not care why whoever that was was screaming. And it wasn’t just because it was none of his business, but also because having knowledge about it would change absolutely nothing. Whatever had happened had happened and there was nothing that they could do about it. But it wasn’t like he could tell her that, so instead he decided to say something else that would comfort her. “I don’t know what could have happened to them. But listen,” He said, the
