Chapter 2

Penulis: Sunflower
When Lily arrived, I was sitting on a bench in the park.

"Are you okay?" she asked with concern.

I shook my head, but my swollen, red eyes said it all. I looked up at Lily and the man standing next to her.

"What are you doing here?" I asked without thinking.

Hayden Ortiz looked at me with concern. Upon hearing my question, his expression turned awkward.

Immediately, he asked in return, "What, I'm not even allowed to tag along now?"

Lily quickly stepped in to smooth things over. "Hayden just got back to the country recently. He heard about Scott's illness and asked me if he could help. By the way, what did you mean when you said Scott isn't sick?"

I calmly told them everything I had learned.

Lily cursed angrily, "Theodore and Scott are real pieces of work! Like father, like son indeed!"

She then turned around angrily as if she were going to settle the score with them.

I reached out to grab her hand and stop her. "Forget it, Lily."

Lily's eyes were red with unshed tears. "Are you going to just let them get away with this?"

I shook my head. "If they want to be a family so badly, I'll grant their wish."

Lily and Hayden took turns comforting me. After I had a better hold of my emotions, I asked them to take me home.

I didn't return out of sentiment, but only because I didn't want to leave any of my things behind.

After I finished packing, Theodore called.

When I answered, he said, "The wedding venue is set up pretty well. You should come take a look."

"I don't want to go," I said bluntly.

Upon hearing my refusal, he paused for a moment before saying, "If you don't come, Scott will overthink it again. He's just starting to feel better and returning to his energetic self."

I didn't argue and simply said, "I already agreed to Scott's request. Ivanna is his mother now. It wouldn't be appropriate for me to go for now."

Theodore hesitated and asked, "You're not mad, are you?"

I smiled and replied, "How could I be? I'm willing to do anything for Scott. Tell him not to worry and just follow through with what he wants."

Theodore was clearly moved after hearing that from me. "Janice, having a reasonable wife like you is truly a blessing."

After exchanging a few more words, I hung up and called a courier. I mailed part of my belongings to Lily's place and threw the rest straight into the trash.

Once everything was sorted, I turned and saw the family portrait and the photo albums placed in a prominent spot at home.

Without hesitation, I found an open space and burned them all.

After the albums had been burned to ashes, I lay on the bed. All the strength had been drained from my body.

Images flashed before my eyes. I saw in my mind's eye Theodore confessing his love to me. Then, the scene morphed to Scott begging me to get a divorce. It twisted and distorted until I saw the three of them laughing together in the hospital room once more.

With those chaotic thoughts swirling in my mind, I drifted off to sleep.

I was awakened by Theodore.

"How careless of you to fall asleep without even covering up. You'll catch a cold, you know?" he muttered.

I looked up and saw that he was tucking the blanket around me.

I stared at him intently, trying to see past his gentle and affectionate act into his heart.

Upon noticing my gaze, he asked, "Are you feeling unwell?"

I shook my head. "How's the wedding setup coming along?"

"It's almost done. As long as there's enough money, no matter how tight the schedule is, they'll finish it for you," Theodore replied.

After he answered me, he paused for a moment and gently tucked a strand of hair behind my ear.

He said, "These past few days have been really hard on you. Once everything is over, I'll make it up to you properly."

Maybe his voice was just too gentle, but it somehow brought tears to my eyes.

Theodore patted my hand tenderly. "There, there. Don't cry."

I sniffled in response.

After a few more comforting words, he prepared to leave.

He mumbled, "There are still a few wedding procedures that I need to rehearse..."

"Theodore."

He turned and asked, "What is it?"

I clenched the bedsheet tightly and asked in a trembling voice, "Are you and Scott hiding something from me?"

A flash of guilt passed through Theodore's eyes. He carefully considered his words before speaking up.

So, I convinced myself that I wasn't being a callous playboy by sending her those messages. One night, Ivanna got drunk and asked me to come out for a chat.As it happened, Janice saw the messages. She cried and questioned me about what exactly was going on between me and Ivanna. I was still angry that she wouldn't leave her job. So, I continued ignoring her until she finally broke down. Janice sobbed her heart out and insisted that nothing was going on between her and her boss.Of course, I knew she was telling me the truth.

That person was none other than Ivanna, my childhood sweetheart.Ivanna and I had grown up together. She was sweet, cute, and very dependent on me.But neither of us dared to express our true feelings. I thought Ivanna didn't love me the way I loved her.During my sophomore year, I saw a photo on Ivanna's social media of her holding hands with someone else. That moment crushed me. Scott's POVI never thought my mom would really leave me.During Dad and Ivanna's wedding, Mom had said she would never remarry him. Even so, I wasn't really worried at that time. After Mom left the venue, Dad and I were busy dealing with the guests. We received a lot of strange looks from them.I felt humiliated. And so, I started thinking about what I'd say to Mom once we got home. After some time, I settled on these words. "It's all your fault. You embarrassed me in front of so many people!"I imagined that after I said that, Mom would look guilty. Maybe she'd even make her signature soup to make it up to me.But all those fantasies disappeared the moment we returned home.Mom was gone, along with all her belongings. I stared at the blank spot on the wall where our family portrait used to hang, and that was when I realized that she was seriously leaving us this time.I looked at my dad, and in the reflection of his eyes, I saw my own panicked face.We didn't know where sh

I said the very thing I'd kept bottled up all these years. "From the very beginning of our marriage, Ivanna was always there. I've always been curious. If Ivanna was so great, why didn't you just marry her in the first place?"Theodore's lips trembled. "Because I loved you."Ivanna, who was standing off to the side, looked visibly hurt when she heard those words.I let out a cold laugh. "Love? How ridiculous. You say you love me, yet you kept getting involved with Ivanna. You say you love me, but then you teamed up with Scott to trick me into a divorce so you could marry Ivanna."Your love is awfully cheap, isn't it?"As I spoke, Hayden wrapped his arm around my shoulder and said in a low voice, "If I had known back then that you'd treat Janice this way, I would've tried to win her back no matter what. You're a pathetic excuse of a man, Theodore."All of them were rendered speechless.Hayden lifted my hand in front of them to show off the ring he had placed on it.When we retur

I let go of Hayden and turned to see Theodore, Scott, and Ivanna.Ivanna glanced a few times at Hayden. She reluctantly tore her eyes away from the Vacheron Constantin watch on his wrist before turning to address me.She complained, "Janice, we've been going crazy trying to find you. Theo asked everyone, friends and relatives alike. We didn't expect to find you here with another man..."Theodore's face was dark with rage. "Janice, so you really got back together with Hayden? And you insisted nothing was going on."Hayden replied with disdain, "Do I need to remind you how you stole her from me back then?"Theodore took a deep breath, seeming to recall something. "So what? She became my wife.""She's no longer your wife. Need I remind you that you're already divorced? You were the one who tricked Janice into divorcing you." Hayden didn't mince his words.Theodore's slightly reddened face, which was simmering with fury, paled instantly at those words. His voice trembled as he trie

Now, I began to doubt. As I looked at Hayden's expectant face in front of me, my first instinct was to question if he was for real.Theodore had also treated me with utmost care before we got married. But look at what happened afterward. Would Hayden turn out to be another Theodore?I couldn't be sure. After all, I no longer had another ten years left to gamble with."Hayden, I'm…"Before I could finish, Hayden interrupted me by pulling out a prenuptial agreement from his pocket.I took it and quickly skimmed through. The document indicated that after I got married to Hayden, I would receive two-thirds of his assets.I looked up in shock. "Are you crazy?"Hayden's trembling voice was full of sincerity. "I'm not crazy. On the contrary, I've never been more certain of anything. I'm not giving up my assets to tie you down. It's to show my commitment to our marriage."Once we get married, I won't leave you for the rest of my life. But if you ever want to divorce me, you'll have all
