Chapter 4

مؤلف: Ding
It was my last day in the pack.

After I bid farewell to Elder Mark Smith, he said, "Please drop by the Alpha's residence before you leave. Alpha Cain is looking for you."

At first, I wanted to reject his request. But after considering how I was leaving the pack that night, this might be the last time Cain and I would see each other if he and Vera stayed out for the entire night as they were wont to do.

I thought that it was better for me to tell Cain that I was breaking up with him in person since we had been together for five years.

In the end, I decided to drop by Cain's residence.

I was about to step through the door when I spotted Cain lounging on a chair through the window.

Vera, dressed in a long gown, had her head resting on Cain's lap. The scene looked quite intimate.

I couldn't hear what Cain said, but whatever it was made Vera cover her mouth as she burst into a peal of giggles.

I stopped in my tracks. I was considering just turning around and leaving when Vera noticed me. She gasped in surprise and hastily straightened up.

"What are you doing here, Leah?"

A hint of panic flickered across Cain's face. He hastily straightened his disheveled clothes before turning on me with a scowl.

"Who gave you permission to enter without knocking, Leah? Didn't I tell you in the past that you need to wait for me to give you the okay, even after you knock?"

I ignored him and said, "Elder Mark told me that you were looking for me."

Cain scoffed. He strode over to the table and angrily dialed a number.

Elder Mark arrived at his residence in less than five minutes.

"Did you tell Leah that I was looking for her?" Cain asked coldly.

Elder Mark immediately noticed that something was amiss. His eyes darted between Cain's icy expression and Vera, who looked troubled as she stood to the side. His anxiety spiked, rendering him unable to speak at that moment.

A long time passed before he finally mumbled, "I… I don't remember."

Cain scoffed before he glared at me.

"Did you get what you want, Leah?" he asked. "I thought you had matured, but you only learned how to lie. You're just constantly spouting nonsense now."

I was rendered speechless by his words.

"Don't be angry, Alpha Cain," Vera chimed in. "I'm sure that Leah isn't trying to frame Elder Mark on purpose."

She ran a soothing hand down Cain's back as she looked at me. "I hope that you don't get the wrong idea as well, Leah. I had a headache earlier because I was exhausted. That's the only reason why I was resting on Alpha Cain's lap. Don't overthink what you saw."

Although I wasn't sure what was going on, I had no doubt that Vera was the mastermind pulling the strings behind the scenes.

Knowing that Vera was the Beta that Cain favored the most, Elder Mark didn't dare tell the truth when he noticed that something was amiss with the situation. He was also unsure if Cain would believe him even if he did expose the truth.

I remained silent.

Cain was still furious. "You don't need to explain yourself to her. We didn't do anything wrong, so there's nothing to explain. As for you, Leah, I've decided to relieve you of all your duties in the pack since you were trying to frame an elder."

Elder Mark tried to explain the situation. "Alpha Cain, Leah has already—"

He probably wanted to tell Cain that I was leaving the pack, but Cain silenced him with an icy glare. "I don't want to hear any excuses. Just carry out my orders!"

Elder Mark didn't dare say another word. He turned and left.

I figured that it was about time for me to take my leave. I was just about to do so when Cain suddenly called out to me.

Perhaps it was because he had just expressed his frustrations, but he looked a lot calmer.

"I'm not trying to target you, Leah," he said earnestly. "I'm the Alpha of the pack. I can't show you favoritism just because you're my future mate."

Vera nodded and added, "He's right, Leah. Alpha Cain's doing what's best for you."

Cain nodded in response. "You're truly an excellent Beta, Vera."

He glared at me before continuing, "Meanwhile, you're nothing like her. The only thing you're good at is being jealous. Is there anything else that you can do? Why don't you take a leaf out of Vera's book and learn to be more like her?"

I wondered what exactly Cain wanted me to learn from Vera. Did he want me to learn how to insert myself into someone else 's relationship? Did he want me to learn how to discreetly drive a wedge between them?

Or perhaps he wanted me to learn how to steal the credit of someone else's work and frame them for things that they didn't do.

I scoffed, not even bothering to argue.

Cain mistakenly assumed that I had learned my lesson when I remained silent. He stepped closer and said earnestly, "I know that you love me, and that you're only doing all these things because you're feeling insecure.

"The full moon's tomorrow. I'll fulfill your wish and officially mark you. When you're my Luna—"

"Mark me?" I asked, interrupting him with a laugh. "There's no need for that, Cain. I don't need you to mark me. Let's end this. Oh, I'm also joining the Northcliff pack. We will have nothing to do with each other from now on."

Cole came to see me after I returned to the Northcliff pack."How did it go?" he asked."They agreed to all our terms. The Southglade pack will relinquish control of three of their hunting grounds to us, and they also agreed to sign a ten-year defense pact with us.""I wasn't asking about that," Cole said as he looked at me, his gray eyes shining with inexplicable emotion. "I wanted to know how you're doing."I was momentarily stunned before I chuckled. "I'm fine."Cole nodded and didn't question me further.…Everything returned to normal in the days that followed. The border became a lot more stable after the Northcliff and Southglade packs signed the defense pact. The Rogues would need a long time to recuperate after we scattered their forces. They wouldn't be able to organize themselves and launch any attacks in the near future.I didn't join the border patrols anymore and was transferred to the administrative department.Cole left me in charge of the Northcliff pack's d

It was Cain.Fresh blood spurted from his body when the silver sword plunged into him."Cain!"I was stunned.Cain gritted his teeth and lunged forward, biting down on Gray's throat.Gray's eyes widened. His mouth fell open before he slowly crumpled to the ground.Cain transformed back to his human form and yanked out the silver sword from his shoulder. He staggered forward before falling to one knee."Cain!"I rushed over to support him.The color had drained from his face. He was bleeding profusely from the wound on his shoulder. The silver poison must be spreading through his bloodstream."Why did you—""I'm sorry," he murmured, looking at me with a smile. "I told you, Leah. My love never disappeared.""Don't talk!" I exclaimed as I applied pressure on his wound. "Get a healer, Ella!""Leah," Cain mumbled, his voice getting weaker by the second. "I… I'm sorry… Leah…""Shut up! Shut up right now!" I shouted in a trembling voice.Cain stared at me. He reached out and ge

The Northcliff pack moved quickly. The next morning, Cole personally led a team of 50 warriors into the Southglade pack's territory.Cain stood at the entrance of the Southglade pack to greet them. The two Alphas made eye contact when Cole appeared."You must be Cain Beckett, the Alpha of the Southglade pack," Cole said as he scrutinized him. "Your wounds look quite severe.""They're not an issue.""Good. Where are the Rogues?" Cole asked, getting straight to the point."The hunting grounds in the east. They've seized control of three of our camps. There are about 40 of them.""40 rogues," Cole repeated while nodding. "What about their weapons?""Better than ours. They have silver weapons."Cole frowned. Everyone knew that silver weapons were fatal against wolves."Who's their leader?""A Rogue named Gray," Cain replied. "He used to be part of the Graywolf pack. After he was exiled, he led a group of wolves and set up camp in the east.""Gray?" Cole repeated, his face twis

All eyes turned to me.I mulled over my thoughts before saying, "Alpha Cole's right. The Rogues won't stop after seizing control of the Southglade pack's territory. If we don't help the Southglade pack, we'll be the Rogues' next target once they become stronger."However, we're not going to help the Southglade pack for free," I continued. "They'll have to compensate us for taking back their territory for them. For example, we can demand control of a part of their border or ask them to sign a defense pact with us."The corners of Cole's lips curled up into a small smile as he looked at me. "Excellent ideas."He stood up and said, "That's what we'll do. I'll lead a team to negotiate with the Southglade pack.""Let me go instead," I said, standing as well.Cole was momentarily stunned. "You?""I'm familiar with the Southglade pack's territory and Cain," I explained. "I'm the right wolf for this."Cole stared at me for a long time before nodding. "Okay. Take a few wolves with you.

I threw myself into my work in the Northcliff pack in the following days.Border patrol was more dangerous than I had expected. Rogues would often appear on the border of the pack's territory, and we would occasionally run into witches as well. However, life felt more fulfilling that way.I would wake up before dawn broke on the horizon every day to patrol the border and only returned home after night had fallen.I kept myself busy with training, carrying out my duties, writing reports, and analyzing maps. I had no time to think about what happened in the Southglade pack or Cain. However, I still received news about him through various channels.Apparently, the Southglade pack descended into chaos for a short while after I left. Wanting to elevate her status even more, Vera took charge of my previous responsibilities. The results were as expected. It was impossible for Vera to carry out those responsibilities based on her capabilities. The talks with the other packs fell throug

Ella hugged me when I stepped into the Northcliff pack's territory."Welcome back," she said with a smile.I closed my eyes and took a deep breath.Although the wind in the Northcliff pack's territory was frosty, I felt really warm for some inexplicable reason. The Northcliff pack's and the Southglade pack's territories were completely different. The Southglade pack's territory was warm and humid, and there were dense forests and bubbling creeks everywhere.Meanwhile, the Northcliff pack's territory stretched out in endless plains and mountain ranges as far as the eye could see. The winds that swept across the land were always chilly. However, the wolves of the Northcliff pack had a certain ruggedness and sincerity that the wolves of the Southglade pack lacked.Ella took me to meet the Alpha of the Northcliff pack, Cole Carter.Cole was tall and broad-shouldered, with a faded scar running from his forehead to his cheek. His dark gray eyes reminded me of the winter sky in the N
