Chapter 3

مؤلف: Ding
"What are you looking at?" Cain asked.

I was so engrossed in reviewing information about the Northcliff pack's that I hadn't noticed him walk up beside me.

He took the document from my hands, flipped through it carelessly, then tossed it back to me. With a scoff, he asked, "Why are you looking into the Northcliff pack?"

"No reason," I replied lightly, putting the document away. "Did you need something?"

In the past, I would've been thrilled whenever Cain sought me out of his own volition.

He was momentarily stunned. An uneasy expression crossed his face. Perhaps he hadn't anticipated that I would treat him with such indifference.

"Yes. Vera's performance has been spectacular recently. I'm planning to promote her to be my Beta. It should motivate the other wolves in the pack too. What do you think?" Cain asked, looking at me.

Although he seemed to be seeking my counsel on the surface, I knew that he wasn't actually interested in my opinion. He was simply informing me of his decision.

"I don't have any objections," I said, nodding.

Cain smiled and continued, "Of course, I need to dish out punishments as well if I'm giving out rewards. The other wolves will certainly cause a fuss if I'm not being fair.

"It's been a long while since you participated in any of the pack's important events, so I plan to transfer you to the logistics department for the time being. I'll transfer you back to your original position in the future.

"Don't worry. I won't keep you there for long. I'm doing this for the sake of the pack. You're my future mate, so I'm sure you'll support my decision, yes?"

I scoffed.

It seemed that Cain was still oblivious to the fact that I had already submitted my request to leave the pack. He was able to discern Vera's mood through the vaguest clues and learn her preferences from the smallest details, but he had no idea that I was leaving the pack even though I was his future mate.

As expected, one could easily tell whether another cared or didn't care about them with just a few simple words.

Cain's expression darkened when I remained silent, assuming that I was going to start an argument with him like I always did in the past.

"It doesn't matter if you disagree," he said. "I've already sent out the announcement, and I've also assigned Vera to your position. Either you accept the transfer, or you can spend the rest of your days cleaning and tidying the house.

"You should listen to my orders because I'm your Alpha. If you insist on opposing me, let's break up."

Cain was confident that I would yield to him and stay with him forever. Similar incidents had occurred too many times in the past.

Although only a year had passed since Vera joined the pack, I had already been demoted several times because of her.

It was why Cain was so sure that I wouldn't leave since I had already put up with so much in the past.

A bitter smile stretched across my face. "I didn't say I was going to disagree."

"It's settled then," Cain said, feeling relieved.

Just as he was about to leave, he seemed to recall something and walked back to my desk.

"Didn't you have a photo of us on your desk before? Where did it go?"

I snapped back to my senses then.

Truth be told, I didn't just have a photo of us on my desk. They used to be everywhere like my phone wallpaper, on the walls in my room, and my wallet that I brought everywhere with me.

Cain had once complained to the other wolves about it, assuming that it was my way of proving my love to him. He had no idea that it was actually my way of reminding myself that no matter what he did to me, he loved me.

I only realized how ridiculous I had been later.

The photos' only purpose was to remind me how foolish I'd been.

I wasn't interested in explaining myself to Cain. "I got it dirty by accident, so I took it down."

"Why are you so clumsy? Can't you do anything right?" Cain asked with a frown, his voice dripping with disdain.

When he realized that I wasn't going to argue, he softened his tone. He then left the room after he was done speaking.

A few months ago, I found women's underwear and lipstick in Cain's house. It was then that I learned that he had brought Vera home multiple times.

I couldn't help myself and interrogated him.

Cain seemed to know that I would question him and immediately explained that Vera had dropped by his home to shower because the plumbing system in her house was malfunctioning. He had also used the opportunity to accuse me of being overly jealous and petty.

To teach me a lesson for "overthinking", he started bringing Vera home without bothering to sneak around anymore.

I had felt incredibly hurt at the time, but Cain made it clear that he didn't care in the slightest.

The next day, Cain announced that he was promoting Vera to be his Beta while transferring me to the logistics department.

He had kept his guard up while making the announcement and only believed that I had accepted the reality of the situation when I acted like nothing was wrong.

Cain threw a party for Vera that lasted for the next few days. While they were celebrating, I was getting the travel pass that I needed to move to the Northcliff pack ready.

When Cain and Vera left to hunt, I packed my belongings. In the end, everything that I was taking with me wasn't even enough to fill a single box.

When the other wolves cheered them on, urging them to pass wine to each other mouth-to-mouth during the party, I handed off all my responsibilities in the pack to the other wolves in my department.

Cole came to see me after I returned to the Northcliff pack."How did it go?" he asked."They agreed to all our terms. The Southglade pack will relinquish control of three of their hunting grounds to us, and they also agreed to sign a ten-year defense pact with us.""I wasn't asking about that," Cole said as he looked at me, his gray eyes shining with inexplicable emotion. "I wanted to know how you're doing."I was momentarily stunned before I chuckled. "I'm fine."Cole nodded and didn't question me further.…Everything returned to normal in the days that followed. The border became a lot more stable after the Northcliff and Southglade packs signed the defense pact. The Rogues would need a long time to recuperate after we scattered their forces. They wouldn't be able to organize themselves and launch any attacks in the near future.I didn't join the border patrols anymore and was transferred to the administrative department.Cole left me in charge of the Northcliff pack's d

It was Cain.Fresh blood spurted from his body when the silver sword plunged into him."Cain!"I was stunned.Cain gritted his teeth and lunged forward, biting down on Gray's throat.Gray's eyes widened. His mouth fell open before he slowly crumpled to the ground.Cain transformed back to his human form and yanked out the silver sword from his shoulder. He staggered forward before falling to one knee."Cain!"I rushed over to support him.The color had drained from his face. He was bleeding profusely from the wound on his shoulder. The silver poison must be spreading through his bloodstream."Why did you—""I'm sorry," he murmured, looking at me with a smile. "I told you, Leah. My love never disappeared.""Don't talk!" I exclaimed as I applied pressure on his wound. "Get a healer, Ella!""Leah," Cain mumbled, his voice getting weaker by the second. "I… I'm sorry… Leah…""Shut up! Shut up right now!" I shouted in a trembling voice.Cain stared at me. He reached out and ge

The Northcliff pack moved quickly. The next morning, Cole personally led a team of 50 warriors into the Southglade pack's territory.Cain stood at the entrance of the Southglade pack to greet them. The two Alphas made eye contact when Cole appeared."You must be Cain Beckett, the Alpha of the Southglade pack," Cole said as he scrutinized him. "Your wounds look quite severe.""They're not an issue.""Good. Where are the Rogues?" Cole asked, getting straight to the point."The hunting grounds in the east. They've seized control of three of our camps. There are about 40 of them.""40 rogues," Cole repeated while nodding. "What about their weapons?""Better than ours. They have silver weapons."Cole frowned. Everyone knew that silver weapons were fatal against wolves."Who's their leader?""A Rogue named Gray," Cain replied. "He used to be part of the Graywolf pack. After he was exiled, he led a group of wolves and set up camp in the east.""Gray?" Cole repeated, his face twis

All eyes turned to me.I mulled over my thoughts before saying, "Alpha Cole's right. The Rogues won't stop after seizing control of the Southglade pack's territory. If we don't help the Southglade pack, we'll be the Rogues' next target once they become stronger."However, we're not going to help the Southglade pack for free," I continued. "They'll have to compensate us for taking back their territory for them. For example, we can demand control of a part of their border or ask them to sign a defense pact with us."The corners of Cole's lips curled up into a small smile as he looked at me. "Excellent ideas."He stood up and said, "That's what we'll do. I'll lead a team to negotiate with the Southglade pack.""Let me go instead," I said, standing as well.Cole was momentarily stunned. "You?""I'm familiar with the Southglade pack's territory and Cain," I explained. "I'm the right wolf for this."Cole stared at me for a long time before nodding. "Okay. Take a few wolves with you.

I threw myself into my work in the Northcliff pack in the following days.Border patrol was more dangerous than I had expected. Rogues would often appear on the border of the pack's territory, and we would occasionally run into witches as well. However, life felt more fulfilling that way.I would wake up before dawn broke on the horizon every day to patrol the border and only returned home after night had fallen.I kept myself busy with training, carrying out my duties, writing reports, and analyzing maps. I had no time to think about what happened in the Southglade pack or Cain. However, I still received news about him through various channels.Apparently, the Southglade pack descended into chaos for a short while after I left. Wanting to elevate her status even more, Vera took charge of my previous responsibilities. The results were as expected. It was impossible for Vera to carry out those responsibilities based on her capabilities. The talks with the other packs fell throug

Ella hugged me when I stepped into the Northcliff pack's territory."Welcome back," she said with a smile.I closed my eyes and took a deep breath.Although the wind in the Northcliff pack's territory was frosty, I felt really warm for some inexplicable reason. The Northcliff pack's and the Southglade pack's territories were completely different. The Southglade pack's territory was warm and humid, and there were dense forests and bubbling creeks everywhere.Meanwhile, the Northcliff pack's territory stretched out in endless plains and mountain ranges as far as the eye could see. The winds that swept across the land were always chilly. However, the wolves of the Northcliff pack had a certain ruggedness and sincerity that the wolves of the Southglade pack lacked.Ella took me to meet the Alpha of the Northcliff pack, Cole Carter.Cole was tall and broad-shouldered, with a faded scar running from his forehead to his cheek. His dark gray eyes reminded me of the winter sky in the N
