Lunessa's POV

Some days later, as dawn broke, their cries pierced the gentle stillness of morning.

Vanya hadn’t arrived yet, so I did what I could, trying to soothe them with soft words and gentle feeding, but they were restless, their cries curling around each other like twin storms in a tiny room.

‘I don’t want my babies crying,’ Due whispered through the mindlink, her voice trembling with something close to tears herself.

I couldn’t help but chuckle. ‘It can’t be helped, Due. They’re babies,’ I replied gently, rocking their beds.

Since I gave birth, Due had been unusually emotional. Her usual sarcastic remarks had vanished, replaced with something tender and childlike. She was always gushing over them.

‘Look at these tiny feet! It’s giving me baby fever,’ she’d say, her mental voice squealing with joy.

Or, ‘Look at those tiny hands! Look at the glowing eyes! They’re shining like stars, Lunessa!’

Every day, she found something new to marvel at.

It was not usual for Shaelith to cry,

  • Marked By Midnight    Chapter 72: The Dead Don’t Speak

Lunessa's POV“Good morning, Lunessa,” I heard his voice from the doorway.I turned, and there he was, Lucien. As handsome as ever, though something about him had matured. The boyish charm was still there, but it had deepened, seasoned by time, his smile hadn’t changed.“Morning, Lucien,” I replied, holding up the cup in my hand. “And thank you for the coffee.”“You’re welcome. I figured after two years, you might have missed it,” he said, stepping inside.A soft laugh slipped from my lips. “Gods, it’s really been two years?”“It has,” he nodded, giving me a once-over. “And time seems to have been kind to you.”I shrugged as I dropped my bag. “It’s... complicated.”“I’m sure it is,” he chuckled knowingly.“Welcome back. How was your study and everything else?” I asked, settling into my chair.“Good,” he replied. “Though I came back expecting things to be as they were, only to hear you’re now the pack’s greatest doctor.”I inhaled, flustered. “I wouldn’t say greatest.”“Well, I would.

  • Marked By Midnight    Chapter 71: Signs I Didn’t Expect

Lunessa’s POVThe ambulance arrived quickly. Medics checked the man, now groaning faintly through charred lips, and rushed him to the hospital.I took the girls home immediately. When we arrived, I found Liora pacing outside, visibly shaken, her eyes wide with worry.“What happened?” she asked the moment she saw us.But I couldn’t speak. I didn’t know where to begin, I barely understood it myself.Once inside, I sat the girls down, brushing loose curls from their faces, checking them over for injuries.Seraphira was still sniffling, her cheeks red and her chest rising and falling with the remnants of panic. Shaelith was quiet, too quiet, her eyes dull with lingering smoke.I sat in front of them.“Tell me exactly what happened.”Shaelith looked at her sister, then at me. “That man tried to take her away.”The air left my lungs. I turned to Seraphira, her lips trembled, her voice barely a whisper.I found out they were playing hide and seek, Seraphira was hiding in the tall grass, when

  • Marked By Midnight    Chapter 70: The Witchling’s Cry

Lunessa's POV When I arrived at work that morning, another emergency had erupted, chaotic, unexplained, and urgent. No one could quite figure out the source of the patient’s collapse, but I stepped in calmly, scanning vitals, symptoms, reactions, and once again, I saved the day.I was slowly becoming the pack’s most trusted doctor. Sometimes, even before tests confirmed it, I already knew what was wrong. It wasn’t arrogance, it was instinct. A quiet certainty that whispered truths to me before machines or medicine ever could. It was a gift I hadn’t fully understood until now, perhaps it was the Kaerwyn bloodline awakening inside me, or maybe it came from carrying the children of a Lycan King. Whatever its source, I had no intention of wasting it.One evening, under the pull of the full moon, I found myself standing by the mirror, staring at the dull mark on my neck. The mating mark.Once, it pulsed, glowing like fire beneath my skin, but not since Velgrath, not since him. Now, it sat

  • Marked By Midnight    Chapter 69: Questions Without Answers

Lunessa's POV When we got home and the last of their ice creams had melted away, I was in the bathroom running their bath when I heard a soft voice behind me."I'm sorry, Mother."I turned. Shaelith stood just outside the doorway, her small hands clasped nervously in front of her, her eyes glassy with guilt. My heart ached. I let the bucket slip gently to the floor and bent to her level, opening my arms. She rushed into them without hesitation, her tiny body trembling slightly as I held her close and stroked her hair."It's okay, baby," I whispered against her temple. "You were only trying to protect your sister, we’ll find better ways next time, together. I promise."Later, after their warm bath and soft towels, we gathered at the dining table for a quiet meal, their laughter returned little by little. In the lounge, I clipped their nails carefully, my hands steady even as my mind wandered back to the events of the day. I kissed Shaelith’s bruised finger before wrapping it in a sma

  • Marked By Midnight    Chapter 68: Elegance Has Teeth

Lunessa's POVWe used the back gate and drove straight to the school after they calmed down. The girl’s father was already waiting in the principal’s office, while her mother remained back at the hospital. My uncle sat with the twins, their legs swinging in nervous silence on the bench.I entered the principal’s office, keeping my tone calm as I greeted her, then gave reports.“Nyra is in stable condition,” I reassured her. “The burns weren’t too deep. She’s conscious and will heal in no time.”The principal didn’t waste time.“What your daughter did is absolutely uncalled for,” she began. “We will address how she managed to do such a thing later, but right now, let’s focus on what this says about her morals.”‘Morals?’ Due snapped through the mindlink. ‘How dare she talk about morals when the other child struck first?’‘Easy, Due,’ I replied back. ‘Let me handle this.’The principal leaned forward, folding her hands like she was delivering a sermon. “What kind of child attacks her c

  • Marked By Midnight    Chapter 67: In Defense Of Her Sister

Lunessa’s POVAfter the incident at the market, I didn’t wait for the whispers to catch up with us. That same evening, I told my uncle everything. The next morning, the woman showed up at our house, voice shrill and furious.“That evil child of yours wrecked my shop!” she screamed, her eyes wide with indignation. “I demand compensation!”The girls were inside. I stood outside with my uncle. He stepped forward with calm grace, hands clasped behind him. “I’m sorry for the unfortunate incident,” he said evenly.“You should be!” she snapped. “I need a new door! That demon child of yours…”His head tilted just slightly.“How dare you raise your voice at me?” His words were soft. Measured and deadly quiet. She froze.“You insulted the twins, called them names, refused to sell them what they wanted. Trapped my niece in your shop and still expected kindness in return?” His voice didn’t rise, but something in it coiled like a blade unsheathed. She stared at the ground, visibly shrinking under
