He could see the defiance blazing in her eyes as she fled the room, and he found it amusing to watch. Lucian turned toward the tall window, staring out into the deepening shadows of the pine forest. His wolf would usually yearn to go out, to shift and run free amongst the trees. Right now, he only wanted the woman who walked out of the room. Whether Eveline liked it or not, she was his fated mate. Her wolf knew it, just like his. He saw it in her eyes, and he could smell it on her. And that was why he found her defiance amusing. There was no need trying to hide it. Because he was not letting her go. He didn't think after all these years, he would have a mate. He never even considered what it would be like. But the feeling was intoxicating. His wolf surged against his ribs, irritated by the distance that separated them. It had taken every ounce of his self control to hold back from the soft weight of her bosom as she surrendered to his touch, to feel that soft skin…with her that close, her warm breath on his face, her scent luring him in. The memory of their closeness mere minutes ago lingered like a drug. Then there was the mark he had left on her neck during their first night. It had glowed a faint orange minutes ago, a sign that only the Vales could see. It was their ancient mating bond, and that alone was conviction enough. Sooner or later, she would realize she was already his. For now, he would play the professional. Professional enough to let her come to him willingly. It would be far more satisfying to watch her break her own rules, to crawl to him with that fire still in her eyes. A low beeping sound jolted him from his thoughts. He turned sharply, ears twitching here and there, tracking the source. The sound was faint, a frequency most people would miss, but his alpha senses caught it immediately. It was coming from the west wing. Marcus Hart’s room. The old man’s heart rate was plummeting. Lucian moved swiftly, hurrying up the corridor. He found Eveline already inside, her face wrinkled with worry. “I need you to give him some space,” he told her, gently guiding her outside. “But-” “He'll be fine, don't you worry.” He turned down the hallway and called, “Howard!” The steward appeared almost instantly, striding down the corridor. “Get me the defibrillator,” he said, shutting the door. “Yes, sir.” Howard moved quickly, wheeling the machine in and handing over the paddles. Lucian yanked open the man’s shirt, exposing his chest. The monitors screamed their warning but he didn't hear them now. His healer instincts had kicked in. If his heart rate was falling, this could only be an effect of the I.V diazepam he administered to induce sleep. Which was normally unusual, because he had given just the right dose. He pressed the paddles firmly against Marcus’s skin. “Clear!” The first jolt arched the older man’s body off the bed. No response. Lucian charged again. “Clear!” The second shock hit harder. Marcus convulsed, then drew a long, deep breath. Lucian waited, still holding the paddles, his eyes trained on his patient's face. Only when he was satisfied by the steady beep on the monitor, did he drop them. He still didn’t waste a second. Slipping on a latex glove, he searched the side cabinet, took out an ampoule of purple liquid and snapped it open. His wolf snarled in response, blanching away from the drug. It was known as lupiliis, a wolf anecdote and a milder substitute for wolfsbane. He injected it directly into the IV line. The compound should calm the erratic shifts threatening to tear through Marcus’s fragile system without poisoning him outright. Or else, they would have a full shifted wolf ripping his villa apart. The lupilis worked: the beeping on the monitor slowed even further, to a steady pace. Lucian exhaled, relaxing his shoulders. He gave Howard a thumbs up, and his steward gave a nod in return. “Perhaps we should get him straps?” He suggested. “Tie him down, just in case?” “No,” Lucian shook his head. “That would only agitate him further. Don't worry, he's not going to shift.” “The full moon is close, sir,” Howard reminded him. “I know.” He gave him a look. “Lunch is closer. Come on, get back to work.” Howard nodded. “And the lady?” “I need to check a few things before she can come in.” Howard nodded again, while Lucian checked Marcus' vitals a second time. He was not about to get on Eveline’s bad side by losing her father on the first night. She would eat him alive. A dark smile tugged at the corner of his mouth. ‘Eat him alive.’ He could picture it too clearly. Those pretty lips stretched around his tool, slurping and sucking with that want that was in her eyes a few minutes ago. Her tongue working him, eyes watering as she took him deeper, his hand fisted in her hair while he claimed her throat… “Sir?” Howard’s voice cut through the haze. “Are you alright?” Lucian blinked. “I’m fine. I'll need to monitor him closely for a while, but until then, keep her out.” “Yes, sir,” said the steward, before leaving.LUCIANThere was something different about her look all of a sudden, almost as if he had stolen her breath away. The light of the sunset itself poured in through the dining windows behind him, casting a golden glow across her face. Her eyes seemed to sparkle like confetti, and her skin seemed to glow brighter against the warmth of the light. He couldn't tell which one made him transfixed to the spot. And his thoughts revolved around the impossibility of it all; Alpha Lucian Reed, one of the most sought-after neurosurgeons in both human and wolf territories; felt butterflies fluttering in his belly at the sight of her.He hadn't given much thought to what it meant to be one's mate, but it was as cruel as it was enchanting. And it did seem like she had a charm that had reduced him to a man who needed a dose of her just to function. The thought was equal parts amusing and annoying. When he left the hotel that morning, he didn't think he'd look back. But the feeling that gnawed at his
EVELINEThe bathroom door suddenly swung open without warning. Eveline nearly jumped out of her skin, spinning around with a gasp.Lucian stood in the doorway, completely unfazed by the sight of her standing there naked.“What the fuck?!” she roared, snatching a towel off the rack and wrapping it around herself as fast as she could. “Don’t you fucking knock?!” Lucian leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed. “You seem to forget you’re in one of my rooms. I own this house. I don’t need permission to enter any room I want.” “what?! You gave this room to me,” she snapped, glaring at him. He looked amused for a second, but then he held up his hands. “You're right. I'm sorry, I shouldn't have scared you like that.” She didn't reply, still glaring at him from behind the screen, with the one hand gripping the towel tightly.“I didn’t expect to see you here, though,” he said. “Could you get out?” “I’ve seen that beautiful body before,” he said. “There’s no need to hide now.”Eveline
EVELINEShe looked up when Howard stepped out of the room, then rushed forward. “How is he?” She asked, fiddling with her thumbs. “He is stable now,” the steward replied. “Just a minor issue and the doctor has handled it.” “I want to see him.” She tried to push past Howard, but he held her back gently with one hand. “I can assure you that your father is in very good hands and will soon be well. The only thing that could be detrimental to him at this time, would be your agitation.” Eveline tried to take calming breaths. She wasn't at her best during stressful situations. And when she had seen her father’s life slipping away on those monitors…It was too scary to forget. But she took another look at Howard , and nodded in resignation. “Alright, fine. Fine.” “You must be exhausted. Allow me to show you to your room.”Eveline didn't have the strength to argue. She took one last look at the door, then followed Howard down the corridor. She still thought of the beeping sounds the

EVELINELucian's eyes darkened, but he didn’t reply. He simply held out a hand, gesturing for her to follow him out of the room. Eveline took another look at her unconscious father, with the butler still sitting beside him. Then she followed Lucian. His face was blank again. He made it look so easy. Maybe it came with being a doctor, to keep one's face without emotion. He was so different from the wolf that had ravaged her that night in the hotel room…They were now in a room that was smaller than the parlour, with leather chairs and wide windows that showed the little forest beyond. “I didn’t expect to see you so soon,” he said. “Not after this morning.”She turned to face him, arms crossed tightly over her chest. “My father was ill. What did you expect?” “That you would offer terms.”“I did have terms,” she reminded him. “I said no sex, it was a one time thing only.” “I meant other terms.”His sharp blue eyes seemed to twinkle again as he studied her. She shifted uncomfortably
EVELINE“Gotta go, Tam.” “Where is his place?” Tammy asked, looking up from where she sat on the couch.Eveline paused to put on her jacket, then took up her bag again. “It's out of the city,” Eveline replied. “But I could Uber there apparently.” She had checked just before taking her bath. ‘Vale Villa’ was the name of the place, and it was a ten minute drive. “I still don't understand why he can't just admit your dad at the hospital.”Eveline avoided her eyes. She still hadn't told Tammy about the deal she made with Lucian, or what happened last night, or the fact that he was her fiance's uncle. Or former fiance. “His condition is bad,” she said. “Bad enough to make him shift out of control, so he has to be with…you know, someone who understands. Doctor Lucian is his best option right now.” “Oh, you werewolves.” Tammy stood up, and held her arms out. “Alright, come here.” They hugged each other tightly, and Eveline squeezed her friend's back for extra measure. “He’s a hand
