LOGINLAYLA
Standing in front of the mirror, I stared at the mark on my neck.
Yeah. That mark. You know the one you get after your fated mate marks you with a kiss. Although my mark looked like it, it was literally smoking like a cursed barbecue. Black smoke curled out of it with little flashes of red, like someone shoved a demon inside my skin, but whatever it was, I was so happy about it. My entire existence was not in vain. I finally had a purpose goddess chose me for.
I had seen marks before of Omega marks, Beta marks, and even a few Gamma ones. Cute little bite marks with some glowing patterns or sometimes a little shimmer. But mine? Oh no. Mine looked like it crawled straight out of a dark prophecy. Of course. Because why would my life ever be normal? I was, after all, a human slave with the shittiest luck in the whole damn world and now mated to the so-called Cursed Prince.
Layla was no normal being! I smirked to myself.
When I walked back into the servant quarters, every single head turned towards me. Even the lowest-ranked omega washing socks paused to stare at my neck like I was some celebrity.
Rumour travels fast. Apparently, even the fleas knew it by now: I. Layla, The Fat Chick, was mated to the Cursed Prince.
Speaking of the prince… Every time I thought about him or that kiss, my knees tried to commit mutiny. I didn’t know if it was the mate bond or the fact that he looked like sin wrapped in royal silk, but that kiss… Goddess. It was too intense to name and too warm to forget.
And those red eyes? People said they were terrifying. Idiots. They looked like rubies, my favourite gemstone and also the only stone I might actually lick if nobody was watching, because it looked like cherry candy, my favourite kind.
There was a knock at my door.
Someone. Knocked. On. My Door. When did that start happening? Yesterday, people threw trash at me. Today, people knock politely? Was I dreaming? Did I die?
“Miss Layla?” An omega woman bowed. “Gamma Lance is calling for you.”
Excuse me? Me? Miss Layla?
Did I fall into a portal? As I followed her, the mixed-bloods glared at me with pure jealousy, and the omegas walked like I suddenly owned the corridor.
What in the rotten potatoes was happening?
When we reached Gamma Lance’s office, I noticed Gamma Ben’s disgusting chair was empty. Good. That shitass was gone.
The omegas whispered that he got transferred to House Ashbourne because his mate was someone of high status. House Ashbourne was the dukedom. They were Betas by blood, nobles by rank, and the Queen herself was an Ashbourne. The Head of every household is given the rank of Alpha, Alpha-Duke in the case of House Ashbourne, which is the highest noble title in the kingdom.
So now my criminal Gamma Ben, who had bullied me all my life, was off living the good life under a Duke.
I couldn’t even take revenge.
Goddess, why do you hate me personally?Gamma Lance cleared his throat. “You will be transferred to the fourth floor. Macey will show you your new room. You are the mate of the Prince now. Don’t cause trouble. Don’t get arrogant either. You are marked, not wed. Don’t expect to be treated like a princess yet. But you won’t be serving anymore. You may choose one mixed-blood and one omega to serve you.”
“Yes, Gamma,” I said quickly. I wasn’t stupid. My life was finally improving, and I wasn’t going to pick a fight. I knew I wasn’t princess material. I had nothing to offer the prince, like no noble alliance, or wealth or anything. The soldiers even said he could still marry a noblewoman, and she wouldn’t die because the curse would kill me instead. The curse was applicable to a mate only. A mate and wife can be separate individuals as well.
Stupid nobles. Always finding loopholes like rats in a pantry.
My new room made my jaw drop. I’d slept next to garbage piles for years. Now I had a soft mattress that hugged me like it loved me. I threw myself onto it and grinned like a maniac.
There were fruits too. I devoured them all, letting grape juice drip down my chin like I was some vampire dripping with blood. Life was good.
A knock came again, and Daisy walked in.
I jumped up to hug her, but she bowed.
“Miss Layla.”
“What the fuck is wrong with you?” I asked her straight.
“Gamma Lance said you chose me as your… servant.” Daisy bowed deeper. “Thank you for the honor—”
“Oh shut up,” I rolled my eyes. “I chose you because you’re my best friend, dumbass. We suffered together, we rise together. If life is finally giving us a break, we’re taking it with both hands. No lies. No power games. Trust me.”
She squinted at me suspiciously, because trust was something we learned only through trauma and stolen bread.
“I swear,” I put a hand over my chest. “If I lie, may my heart explode and I die on the spot.”
Finally, she smiled.
We collapsed on the bed, laughing, eating fruits and acting like idiots who discovered happiness for the very first time.“How is the prince?” Daisy whispered. “Is he scary?”
“Opposite,” I said proudly.
“Really?”
“He is tall and strong and brave and handsome… and his red eyes look like candies. I just wanna chew them and swallow them.” I answered her truthfully.
“EWW!” Daisy gagged.
“I wanted to show you something,” Daisy suddenly said. “Something strange happened when I ran from the fire… I think I can do this.”
“What—?”
Suddenly, my butt lifted.
My WHOLE body lifted.“What the FUCK—?!” I screamed, floating like a fat balloon in a storm.
Daisy stood there, glowing gold.
I stared at her, eyes wide. “You… you… you HAVE MAGIC?!”
I was so shocked I forgot to breathe.
“I think so?” Daisy squeaked. And as she panicked, I drifted backwards, farther and farther toward the window.
I yelled in panic, “DAISY STOP! Don’t come closer. When you come near me, I go further!”
She didn’t understand. Because panic. Because chaos. Because us.
And then I was out the window.
Outside.
FOURTH. FLOOR.
“I HAVEN’T EVEN SLEPT WITH MY MATE YET!” I shouted to the goddess. “YOU CAN’T KILL ME NOW! YOU SHOWED ME CANDY AND DIDN’T LET ME TASTE IT?!”
“Layla!” Daisy cried. “I can’t hold you anymore! You are too heavy!”
“DON’T YOU DARE DROP ME! If I fall, I’ll be buried seven feet deep just from impact! No shovel needed!”
And then, of course, I fell.
“Goddess,” I screamed, “YOU ARE MEAN AND RUDE!”
How are you liking the story so far? Spoiler: The Second Male lead will come now!
Layla“Lucian, I have something to talk to you about,” I said as I knocked on his door.He looked up from his study and saw me standing there. “Come inside.”I took a seat in front of him. He frowned. “You didn’t tell me you went to court again.”“Twice in one week,” he added.“You were busy,” I said softly.“I am never busy for you, Layla,” he replied.“Okay,” I said.“I think you agreed in the end because you don’t want me to pursue the matter,” he said.I lowered my eyes. “It’s nothing like that.”“Are you sure?” he asked.I nodded, but he didn’t look satisfied.“I came here for something urgent,” I said. “While leaving the palace, I met the queen. Well… something bad happened.”His voice turned possessive. “Did she do something to you?”“No,” I said quickly. “It’s not me she’s going to hurt.”I looked at him and said, “It’s Arielle.”I continued, “I found out that my staff worker, Sora, and Prince Matthew are having an affair. I didn’t ask her about it because I didn’t want to con
The court fell silent as the royal scribe finished reading the king’s judgment. “The court finds that Princess Layla’s decision is lawful and justified. Duke Hawthorne gave his words in writing. It can therefore be implied that Duke Hawthorne accepted that any member of his house would be at Princess Layla’s disposal, provided the token was used.”The king gave a slow nod, signalling that the matter was closed. There would be no further discussion and no appeal. The judgment had been delivered, and it could not be undone.A broken voice shattered the silence.“Your Majesty. Father..... Please.”Princess Elena rushed forward, ignoring the shocked gasps around her as she fell to her knees before the throne. Her hands trembled as she clutched the edge of the king’s robe, her eyes filled with desperation and fear.“Please reconsider,” she begged. “My father, my brothers, they do not deserve this. This punishment is too cruel.”Her voice shook as she pleaded, but the king did not respond
“What do you mean by this, Princess Layla? Are you threatening Duke Hawthrone?” Prince Marcus asked sharply. Behind him, his wife, Princess Elena, looked furious. Her eyes burned with rage. All three of her brothers were about to be sent to Prince Lucian’s household as servants. To her, it was unbearable humiliation. She looked as if she wanted to tear my face apart. I could read her thoughts clearly. But did I care? Not at all. “What do you mean by *what*?” I asked, putting on my most innocent expression. “Brother-in-law, we are standing in the court of law, before the king himself. I should not be accused before His Majesty gives his verdict. He is the moon of our empire, and his decisions are final.” The king grunted in irritation. He clearly disliked being dragged into a family dispute, but Prince Marcus had insisted on bringing this matter before him. “Your Majesty,” I said calmly, stepping forward and holding up a golden token. “Prince Marcus and Princess Elena gave this t
LaylaSer Lewis and Carl returned to the prince’s mansion late into the night. Until they came back, I did not sleep even for a moment. My mind kept running in circles, replaying every possibility, every answer they might bring. I needed to know what had happened. Had they accepted the token. Had they agreed. Even if they had not, I was not prepared to let this matter rest. They owed me this much for nearly taking my husband’s life.“Princess,” Ser Lewis said the moment he entered.I sat up immediately. “What is the news,” I asked, unable to hide the excitement rising inside me.Ser Lewis hesitated before answering. “They did not agree.”Carl stepped forward and added, “They claim they cannot allow a commoner who does not have a formal education to study medicine.”“But I can read and write,” I said sharply.“They said you do not possess a certificate,” Ser Lewis replied.Carl continued, “Duke Hawthorne was close to agreeing, but his brother objected. He said the medical institution i
Layla “Your Highness, a few months ago you gave me a token from the Hawthorne family. You said I could use it however I wished. Do you still feel the same?” I asked him with my heart thumping in my ears. He looked at me, confused. Had he changed his mind? What if he had done? “Why would I change my mind about something I already told you?” he said. “I genuinely wanted you to use the token, Layla.” “Okay.” My heart warmed. So things weren’t as bad as I had feared. At least, he was still allowing me to use the token. “What will you be using it for?” he asked. “I want to learn medicine,” I said. “Medicine?” he repeated. Was he judging me? Then he added, “That’s good. You would be going to the Hawthorne family?” I nodded. “For outsiders, especially those who aren’t Hawthornes, there’s a very tough entrance exam to enter their medical institute,” he explained. “I’m not trying to discourage you. I’m merely saying they don’t like outsiders. They rarely accept them. If there’s so
Layla“Why did you not tell me that you had to come to court?” Lucian asked as soon as the doors closed behind us, his voice calm on the surface but strained underneath.I met his gaze, already knowing there was no answer that would satisfy him. How could I have told him when he had shut himself away, drowning in his own bitterness and refusing to look at anything beyond his wounded pride?“You were busy,” I said quietly. His eyes flared red, the control he prided himself on slipping. “Busy?” he repeated sharply. “We live in the same house, Layla. What could I possibly be so busy with that you could not enter my chambers and tell me you needed me? I have never ignored you.” He paused, his jaw tightening. “I see you as my responsibility.”The word landed like a blow.“Responsibility,” I echoed, forcing my expression to remain neutral even as my chest ached. “Is that what I am to you?”His brows drew together in confusion. “That is not what I meant.”“But that is what you said,” I repli
