MARTIN.

I lay tossing and turning in bed for hours and stared at the ceiling of the pitch-black room. It was impossible for me to keep Charles away from my mind despite all the efforts I put in trying to chase the thoughts off.

I couldn't pick which part of him held me locked completely. I had paid attention to every detail. The way he stooped and hugged himself when none was paying attention.

I closed my eyes and drifted into the darkness.

Charles was standing on the brink of a precipice. "

MARTIN.Raymond rubbed his jaw. "I thought I kept him safe after everything. Turns out I did the worst job at that."Anger burned hot up my neck. My free hand clenched until my knuckles went white. "You did your best. He's not going through it again. Not while I'm breathing.”Raymond met my eyes. Something shifted in his expression. He held out his hand. I stared at it for a second, then took it and shook it. "Zane thinks I owe you an apology for the threats.”“Nah. I bet he did the same with you.”“Yeah,” Raymond smiled, making me smile too. “He did. I do have to thank you, and no, this isn't me handing off my brother to you. I'm choosing to trust you for the time being.”A small smile crossed my face. “Understood.”Charles stirred. His eyes opened, and they met ours. The handshake ended right there. "What are you two grinning at?"Raymond grabbed him for a hug first, and I followed suit, throwing my arms around both of them. Charles laughed softly from inside our embrace, weak but w

MARTIN.My hand moved smoothly over Charles’ back, back and forth in a consistent pattern I’d been maintaining for the past twenty minutes. He was curled up in the fetal position, knees tucked close together and his face almost entirely covered by the pillow, breathing shallowly as though his body was waiting for the next high. I remained right where I was, sitting on the edge of the bed, wearing my jacket and keeping my feet firmly planted on the floor. His shoulder tensed, and I continued to rub him. “Shh. Just go to sleep.”My mind raced back to the wild minutes I was in that damn house. ~Knocking out the final guard with one blow to the head that broke his bones. The shouts rang out behind me, but I kept going. Then I heard it—the sound of pure, heart wrenching weeping that cut through me right there. It brought me to a dim passage where I found a locked storage room. I rammed my shoulder into the door until it burst open.Charles sat slumped against the far wall, his shirt ripp

RAYMOND.Zane said nothing. He didn't ask any questions and simply squatted next to me. His hand settled upon my shoulder firmly and softly. It was warm and comforting. "He's dead," I croaked. My voice was gone. "I killed him.""I know." "He hurt Charles. All those years. He—" The words stuck in my throat. I could not say it. Could not give voice to the terrible reality of it.Zane squeezed my shoulder. "I know, Raymond. I heard quite a bit before you finished him.”I finally looked at him. His face was stone. But his eyes. There was something in his eyes I had rarely seen before or rarely. It was worry. I didn't want his pity. "We need to find Charles." I tried to stand, but my legs buckled beneath me.Zane grabbed me and stopped me from hitting the floor."He needs... I have to—" I started but he cut me off. "Charles is safe."I froze. "What?""Martin has him. He tracked the guards that kidnapped him and got him away before they could transfer him to Domino's secondary location.

RAYMOND.I stood up. I don't remember how. I just did it and with raging blood; even though I had been lying on the floor with broken ribs and a fractured skull. My body was alien to me, as if it didn't belong to me. As if it did not feel pain. As if it had no boundaries.Domino's eyes widened. He swung the rod and I caught it. The suppressant burned my skin. I didn't mind. I took the rod from his hands and flung it across the room, where it stuck in the wall with a crunch of plaster."That's impossible," Domino whispered. He backed away. For the first time in my life, I saw fear in his eyes. "The suppressant should have—"My fist connected with his jaw.His head whipped to the side. Spittle and blood gushed out of his mouth. He staggered but remained on his feet. His reflexes were quick but not as I expected. He was old, cornered, and beaten, he still had some fight left in him.He lunged at me, punching again. I didn't stop him.Again, the punch landed. I relished the pain. I deserv

RAYMOND.My footsteps landed heavily on his wet body as I crossed it. I could hear nothing but my own heartbeat now. This is too quiet. That son of a bitch is lying somewhere around here in this hallway. I just know it.Two guards emerged from around the corner and stopped dead in their tracks, seeing me. The first one tried to pull out his weapon, but I grabbed hold of his arm and snapped it easily. He screamed in pain and agony. His partner tried to beat me with the baton but missed, hit me in the leg, and I dodged aside, hitting him with an elbow and then a kick into his stomach, making him go down to the floor.I kept going. The long, dark pathway was filled with the portraits of Wolfe family members that would certainly have turned in their graves knowing about their descendants. Domino was always an egocentric maniac, leaving his footprint everywhere he went. His scent was strong. A door slammed somewhere ahead. And I ran.The corridor forked in three ways.I stopped, closed my

ZANE.I finished cleaning off any remnants of blood from my hands using the guard's shirt itself. He was unconscious, lying down at my feet with a puffed-up face and breathing that sounded strained. His last words before I had knocked him unconscious was. “Carla took him to the warehouse district. He's waiting. I was supposed to leave but I didn't get the chance when cleaning the evidence off. I deleted half the footage.”I straightened myself up when I saw Raymond come down the stairs, his shoes hitting the marble stairs with such a bang. He had gotten rid of his suit jacket and left the inner body piece, hugging his triangular body shape. "You finished him off?" Raymond demanded, eyes locked on the body. “You said you would let him live.”I shook my head. "He's alive. Barely. Don't talk like you care to spare his life.”Raymond wouldn't stop looking. “This much blood is nasty. Are you sure you didn't kill him?”“When have I given you a cause to doubt me?” Raymond shook his head o
