Chapter 2

Author: Geese
I left the healing center and went straight to the pup nursery to pick up Toby.

The moment he saw me, he said, "It's my birthday today, Mommy."

Then, he continued, "Will Daddy celebrate it with me?"

Tears immediately welled up in my eyes as I stood in the crowded road. "Your father—"

My mind-link buzzed before I could finish. Evan finally had the time to reply to me.

"I'm free. I'll come home."

A rush of joy swept through me. For a moment, I completely forgot about the fact that I had been drugged all this while.

I eagerly nodded. "Don't worry, Toby. Daddy will be home."

Toby clapped and dove into my arms, bursting with excitement.

During the six years we had been secretly mated, this was the first time Evan had agreed to celebrate Toby's birthday.

That evening, I prepared a whole spread of meat dishes. Toby had also finished his homework early.

An hour turned into two, and then three, as we waited.

I sent another message through our mind-link. As usual, no reply came.

Toby seemed to realize something and looked at me carefully. "Mommy, is Daddy too busy?"

A stab went through my chest.

I wanted to explain, but nothing came out of my mouth. All I could manage was, "It's okay. I'll always be here for you."

Toby stopped asking. He obediently picked up his birthday hat. "Can you put it on me, Mommy?"

I nodded and moved to help him. However, I accidentally caught an update from Selena on the WolfNet.

"Today was wonderful. I really enjoyed it." The post included a photo of a dish from the pack's fanciest restaurant.

Even though Evan's face wasn't in the photo, I still noticed the straw ring peeking out in the upper corner.

It was the ring we'd exchanged when we bonded under the moon. I had woven them from flowers that never wither.

However, Evan always wore it on the pinky of his left hand. He was declaring himself single using human custom.

The straw ring that symbolized our mate bond had become a sign he showed the world to claim he was unattached. What an irony.

On Toby's sixth birthday, Evan was having a candlelit dinner at a fancy restaurant with his childhood sweetheart.

All the bitterness inside me settled into a quiet, dead calm.

I liked the post and exited the app. Then, I turned back to Toby and placed the simple cardboard birthday hat on his head.

"Happy birthday, Toby," I said.

I decided to weave him a proper birthday crown next year.

Toby closed his eyes by the candlelight, clasping his hands to pray to the Moon Goddess. "My wish is to always be with Mommy."

I picked up the WolfNet again and captured the moment.

The thought of leaving the pack finally blossomed inside me.

I replied, "Okay. I promise to always be with you."

That night, none of us mentioned Evan again. It was as if this home had always belonged to just the two of us.

After Toby fell asleep, I pulled the rejection agreement I'd prepared in advance from the drawer.

The last trace of hesitation in my heart finally dispersed.

Evan finally came home at 2:00 am.

A flicker of frustration crossed his steel-blue eyes when he saw the leftover cake and cold roast on the table.

He said, "Sorry. I forgot."

I couldn't help but smile bitterly.

Did Evan really not hear the buzzing of my mind-link in his head? Or was he too lost in the arms of his childhood sweetheart to hear it and remember that this was his home?

I took out the agreement and flipped it to the last page. Then, I forced myself to be calm as I handed it to him. "Just sign this—"

Before I could finish, Evan's phone rang.

Selena's slightly panicked voice came through, "My door's lock is broken, Chief Healer Evan. I'm scared I'll be attacked by wild beasts tonight. Can you come keep me company?"

Evan immediately shot up, a flash of urgency in his eyes. "Wait there. I'm coming over."

After ending the call, he signed his name at the bottom without even glancing at the agreement.

I stepped back and watched him go.

Remember that you were the one who chose to abandon this home, Evan.

I woke up early to help him pack his schoolbag.Although we had only arrived at the kingdom two days ago, I'd been planning this for a long time.Half a year ago, I'd already contacted an old apothecary friend who had transferred here. I got his help to find me a suitable place to live and an academy for Toby.I wanted to prepare for the day I would dissolve my mate bond.Initially, I hadn't planned to come this soon. But as an apothecary, I had a habit of preparing an antidote in advance for everything.Looking back now, this habit of mine had saved me from becoming completely lost when the time came.It was also thanks to Evan, who still had a shred of conscience and was never stingy with money or resources after the marking.Because of that, I'd saved enough to gain a foothold in the incredibly expensive werewolf kingdom. After watching Toby board the academy carriage, I pulled my coat tighter an

That night, Evan sat on the cold stone floor in the kitchen until dawn. It was the first time he'd looked this miserable. In the past, no matter how late Evan returned, there would always be a warm glowstone lamp left on for him. And there would always be a quiet figure with a faint scent of herbs waiting patiently on the couch for him to return. Now, everything was gone. All that was left in the vast house was himself as he waited alone for the day to break.…The next day, Evan didn't even bother changing out of the robe that still reeked of alcohol before heading straight to the healing center. When he pushed open the door to the apothecary room, my workstation had already been cleared, leaving nothing behind.A thin document sat on the desk. Evan opened it with trembling hands, and a bold line of text came into view."Due to multiple irreconcilable differences between both parties, the mate bond has broken beyond repair. By mutual agreement, both parties voluntarily dis

To keep Selena from senselessly causing more trouble, Evan avoided joining any more conversations with other healers for the rest of the exchange dinner.Even when healers from other packs came over to chat, he only offered brief, polite replies. For the rest of the evening, Evan sat alone on a couch in the corner, downing glass after glass of hard liquor. When the dinner finally ended, he bid his goodbyes to the host and quickly fled.…The liquor was starting to hit hard by the time Evan got home.Pressing a hand to his forehead, he pushed the door open with unsteady steps. "Get me some water, Harper."His words fell into silence.Evan lifted his head and looked at the dark hall, only to realize that Toby and I had already left yesterday. He turned on the glowstone lamp on the wall and walked into the kitchen, pulling out a hangover tonic from the fridge. As Evan closed the door, he suddenly realized that the fridge was covered in pieces of drawings he hadn't noticed before

At 6:00 pm the next evening, Evan attended the Inter-Pack Healing Exchange Dinner. It had been a full day since he'd last seen me. Holding a glass of amber fruit wine, he found himself distracted. In the past, I'd never missed an event like this."It's just a breakup. Is she really going to skip something this important?" Evan frowned, irritation rising in his chest. He pulled out his phone, about to message me.Suddenly, the director of the Mountain pack's healing center walked up and interrupted him, saying, "Evan, about that exchange agreement for the batch of hemostatic herbs—"Evan froze, immediately pushing aside his other thoughts as he switched into work mode.Just as the group of healers was deep in conversation, an out-of-place voice suddenly cut in, "This honey-glazed berry cake is so good, Chief Healer Evan!"Selena was holding a piece of cake dripping with red jam, her eyes wide with callow innocence. The other healers didn't look too pleased at how their conversa

At the same time, while Evan was enjoying time alone with Selena, a sharp pain suddenly struck his chest. It was late at night in the bedroom when the sharp spasm gripped his heart.Evan was certain it was the backlash from a rejected mate bond. But what he couldn't believe was that I had actually done it.He muttered, "Harper, how dare you—"Just then, Evan's WolfNet lit up. A partially visible notification popped up. "Healing Center Staff Transfer: Regarding the apothecary room…"A bad feeling suddenly settled in his chest when he saw those words. He was about to open it when Selena walked in. She was dressed in a revealing silk nightgown, with a cloying floral scent clinging to her."Here's the report on the batch of herbs you asked for, Chief Healer Evan," she said.Selena placed the parchment on the desk, then moved behind Evan with practiced ease. She wrapped her arms around his neck, her fingertips brushing lightly along the side of his face.In the past, their chemistr
