Sable's POV

"What do you mean, warned you about?" I asked.

Bram's grip on my wrist didn't loosen. If anything it got tighter, like he was trying to keep me from disappearing before he finished saying whatever was stuck in his throat.

"Bram." Rook's voice cut in, sharp. "Let go of her arm."

"She's got the mark," Bram said, ignoring him. "The one everybody's been talking about since the rogues hit the east ridge. They said Ironclaw's Alpha used the Words on some girl."

"That's enough," Rook said. "You're in shock. You're not thinking straight."

"I'm thinking fine." Bram's eyes finally left my collarbone and found my face instead. "Who told you to come here?"

"Nobody told me anything," I said. "I ran. Ivy found me."

He didn't look convinced, but the fight seemed to drain out of him along with whatever adrenaline had kept him talking. His hand slipped off my wrist, and his eyes rolled back before closing completely.

"He's out," Ivy said, checking his pulse. "But he's breathing steady. Whatever you did worked."

I sat back on my heels, arms shaking, the strange warm feeling in my hands gone as fast as it had come. My whole body felt hollowed out, like something had been scraped clean from the inside.

"Get him back to camp," Rook said. "Careful with that side."

Two wolves lifted Bram between them, moving slow and steady toward the trees. Ivy helped me up when my legs wouldn't cooperate on their own, and the walk back felt twice as long as the walk out here had.

By the time we reached the Hollow's main camp, word had already spread. I could feel it in the way people looked at me, the way conversations dropped low the second I walked past. Whatever Bram had said out there in the clearing, it hadn't stayed a secret for long.

That night, a dozen or so wolves gathered around the central fire, and I wasn't invited, but I could hear every word from where Ivy had told me to wait near the supply tent.

"He nearly died out there, and she's the reason those rogues were in our territory to begin with," a man said. His voice carried an edge I recognized from Reva, the kind that decided things before anyone else got a say.

"She didn't bring them here on purpose," Ivy said. "She's the one they were hunting."

"That's exactly the problem." Another voice, older, rougher. "An Ironclaw Alpha doesn't waste the Words on nobody important. Whatever she is, it's got somebody's attention, and now it's got ours too."

"She saved Bram's life tonight," Rook said. "That should count for something."

"Or it should scare us more," the older voice shot back. "What kind of omega heals a gut wound with her bare hands? That's not pack magic. That's something else."

The fire crackled loud enough to fill the silence after that. I pulled my knees up to my chest and stared at the ground, listening to strangers argue over whether I deserved to exist in their camp.

"She stays," Rook said finally, flat and final. "I found her. I'm responsible for her. If anyone's got a problem with that, take it up with me directly instead of talking around a fire like a bunch of gossiping pups."

Nobody answered right away. I heard someone shift, a log settling in the flames, boots scraping dirt.

"You've done this before," the older voice said, quieter now. "Taken in strays who bring trouble with them. Doesn't always end well for the rest of us."

"Noted," Rook said. "Anything else?"

More silence. Then, slowly, the group started breaking apart, wolves peeling off toward their own tents without another word. I stayed where I was, not sure if I was supposed to move yet, not sure where I even belonged in this camp full of people who clearly didn't want me here.

Ivy found me a few minutes later and sat down next to me without saying anything at first.

"That went about how I figured," she said eventually.

"They don't want me here."

"They don't trust anything they don't understand. That's different." She picked at a loose thread on her sleeve. "Give it time. Most of them came in here the same way you did. Scared, bleeding, no idea where else to go. They'll remember that eventually."

"And if they don't?"

"Then you learn to not need their permission." She stood, offering me a hand up. "Come on. You look like you're about to fall over."

I let her pull me up, my legs still unsteady from whatever I'd done to Bram's wound. We walked back toward the tent Rook had pointed me to earlier, past the last few wolves still lingering near the fire's dying embers.

One of them stepped into my path before I could pass. He was older, grey through his beard, the same rough voice from the argument by the fire. Up close his eyes had a hard, calculating look to them, like he was still deciding something about me even now.

"A word," he said, not really asking.

Ivy stopped walking. "Whatever you've got to say, you can say it in front of me."

"This won't take long." His gaze dropped to my collarbone, same as Bram's had, same as everyone's seemed to lately. Before I could step back, his hand shot out and grabbed my wrist, hard enough to make me gasp.

"Let go of her," Ivy said, reaching for her knife.

"I'm not going to hurt her." He didn't let go. His grip stayed tight, his voice dropping low enough that only the three of us could hear it. "I just want her to understand something before she gets comfortable here."

"Then say it and let go," I said, trying to keep my voice steady.

He leaned in close, close enough I could smell woodsmoke and something bitter underneath it, like herbs gone stale.

"That mark isn't a rejection," he said. "It's a leash. You just don't know who's holding it yet."

He let go of my wrist and walked off into the dark before either of us could respond, leaving me standing there with my heart pounding and his words sitting heavy in my chest, refusing to make any sense at all.

  • Marked and Cast Out, She Came Back Untouchable    Chapter 13

Sable's POVSela's words followed me into my tent that night and were still sitting in my chest when Ivy shook me awake the next morning."Up," Ivy said. "We're starting knife work today.""What time is it?""Early enough that you shouldn't be asking me that." She tossed something at me, and I caught it on instinct, a knife, handle first, the blade catching the dim morning light. "Eat later. Get up."I dragged myself out of the tent, the weight of the blade unfamiliar in my hand, my grip already off according to the way Ivy frowned at it the second she saw me holding it."You're holding it like you're scared of it," she said."I am scared of it.""Good. Means you're smart. Now hold it right anyway." She adjusted my fingers with quick, practiced movements. "Thumb here, not wrapped all the way around. You want control, not a death grip."I copied the grip, and the blade sat steadier in my palm after that, though it still felt wrong somehow, like I was holding something that belonged to

  • Marked and Cast Out, She Came Back Untouchable    Chapter 12

Sable's POVYarrow sent me back to camp with more questions than I walked in with, and no real answers to go along with them. I spent the walk back turning her words over ‘he stopped halfway through’ trying to figure out what that even meant for someone like me.By the time I reached the fire pit, the sun had started dipping low, and the camp had shifted into its evening rhythm. Someone was cooking something over the flames that smelled better than anything Reva ever let me eat. A few wolves sat scattered around, talking low, glancing my way and then quickly not glancing my way, the same dance I'd gotten used to over the past few days.I found a spot near the edge of the fire, far enough from the crowd to not feel like I was intruding, close enough to actually feel warm."You're the one Rook picked up."The voice came from behind me, flat, not really a question. I turned and found the woman from earlier, the one Ivy had pointed out on our walk,Sela, the one who said no to an arranged

  • Marked and Cast Out, She Came Back Untouchable    Chapter 11

Sable's POVRook brought me over to Yarrow's tent right after the midday meal, not giving me much time to think of an excuse to put it off. Not that I had one. I wanted answers as much as anyone else did at this point. The old woman was sitting cross-legged outside her tent, sorting dried leaves into small piles when we walked up. She didn't look up right away, though I got the feeling she noticed us long before we reached her."Rook," she said, still sorting. "Took you long enough to bring her by.""Been a busy couple of days.""Mm." She set the leaves aside and finally looked up, studying me with sharp eyes that didn't match the rest of her, tired and lined as she looked. "So you're the one who healed Bram with your bare hands.""I don't really know what I did," I said. "It just happened.""Things like that usually do, at first." She waved a hand toward the ground in front of her. "Sit. Let me have a look at you."I sat, cross-legged like her, close enough that I could smell the dri

  • Marked and Cast Out, She Came Back Untouchable    Chapter 10

Sable's POVRook found me near the fire pit an hour later, watching me the way he watched everyone else get sized up since I arrived."Bram tell you anything useful?" he asked."Not really. Mostly that whatever happened to me last night isn't going away.""Figured as much." He nodded toward a log near the fire. "Sit. We need to talk about how things work around here, since you're planning on staying."I sat, mostly because my legs still felt shaky from the sleepless night. "I didn't realize I had a choice about staying.""You do. Nobody's forcing you to be here." He stayed standing, hands loose at his sides. "But if you're staying, you need to understand what that means, because it's not like Ironclaw. Nobody's going to hand you a bowl and tell you to scrub floors because that's your rank.""Then what do I do?""Whatever needs doing. Same as everybody else." He crouched down, picking up a stick and poking at the dead ash in the fire pit, more out of habit than purpose. "You train. Com

  • Marked and Cast Out, She Came Back Untouchable    Chapter 9

Sable's POVI fell asleep faster than I expected that night, worn out from the walk around camp and everything Ivy had told me about the tent full of rogue gear. My body just gave out somewhere in the middle of turning it all over in my head. The dream came fast and clear, clearer than dreams usually get.I was back in Reva's kitchen, standing over the sink with a bowl in my hands, except the bowl kept filling with water no matter how many times I tipped it out. Water spilled over the edges, ran across my fingers, pooled on the floor around my bare feet. I tried to stop it. I turned the bowl upside down, shook it, set it as far away from the tap as I could reach. It kept filling anyway. The water climbed higher, past my ankles, past my knees, cold enough that my whole body ached with it. I called out for someone, though I couldn't say who, and nobody answered. The water kept rising until it covered my chest, until it reached the mark on my collarbone, and the second it touched the bra

  • Marked and Cast Out, She Came Back Untouchable    Chapter 8

Sable's POVI woke up stiff on a bedroll that smelled like someone else's sweat, sunlight cutting through a gap in the tent flap right across my eyes. For a second I forgot where I was. Then my wrist ached where the old man had grabbed it, and everything came rushing back.Ivy was already outside when I crawled out, sharpening a knife against a whetstone like it was the most normal thing in the world to do before breakfast."Sleep okay?" she asked, not looking up."Not really.""Yeah, the first night's rough for everybody." She slid the knife into a sheath at her hip and stood, brushing dirt off her knees. "Come on. I figured I'd show you around before people start staring at you like you're some kind of exhibit.""They already stare.""Fair. Maybe this'll cut down on it a little."We walked past the fire pit from the night before, cold ash and half-burned logs the only sign anyone had been there. A woman crouched near it, stitching a tear in a leather vest, and she nodded at Ivy with
