Zahra's POV

'Zahra.'

A gentle voice in my head drags me back towards consciousness.

'Zahra.'

I feel like I’ve been asleep for a week. My whole body is heavy and achy and fuuuck.

The collar around my neck snags as I shift, and reality slams back into place. Damp straw scratches my skin. The dungeon stinks. My right side is still a blur of darkness and red, and when I try to focus, the swelling pulls tight around my eye like it’s been glued shut.

'Zahra.'

I jolt upright into a sitting position. T

Max's POVThen Xander’s shoulders ease a fraction, and he lets out a quiet breath.“Look, Max, I'm not trying to make this harder for you.”I glance up at him.His voice has softened, although he still looks tired and faintly irritated.“I know,” I admit reluctantly. He studies me for another second, as though deciding whether there's anything more worth saying, before giving a small nod and coming back around behind the chair.I hear his hands settle against the handles, and I realise I've been holding my breath.Wonderful.I've managed to upset him before we've even started. He begins manoeuvring me towards the wider cubicle, taking care over the low threshold. The wheels catch slightly as he pushes me inside, and I instinctively brace myself, one hand pressing against my abdomen when the movement pulls at my injuries.“Fuck,” I hiss under my breath.Xander stops so abruptly that the chair gives a tiny jolt beneath me.“Sorry. You all, right?”His voice changes at once, the tension

  • Marked by fate   Chapter 672

Max's POVXander pushes me through another doorway, and the smell of soap and damp tiles replaces the rather unpleasant aroma of the toilets. There's a long wooden bench running along one wall, a row of hooks above it and several shower cubicles at the far end. The floor is wet in places, and somewhere nearby, a tap is dripping steadily. It's not exactly the luxurious hot shower I'd been fantasising about while running towards Shadow, but right now, I'd probably be grateful for someone tipping a bucket of warm water over my head.Xander stops beside the bench and glances around, taking in the narrow entrances to the individual showers before his eyes settle on a wider cubicle at the end.“Right, that one looks like it'll fit,” he mutters, more to himself than me.He walks over to check, pushing the curtain aside and looking inside before returning to the chair. I watch him moving around the room, his damp hair sticking up slightly at the back and his T-shirt pulling across his shoulde

  • Marked by fate   Chapter 671

Max's POVI push it aside as he reaches down and locks the wheels.“I'm going to help you stand,” he says, straightening and meeting my eyes. “But I need you to let me take your weight, all right? Don't try to be a hero.”“I can stand, Xander.”His eyebrows rise.“Can you?”I open my mouth to argue, but he glances pointedly at the way I'm practically folded over myself, and I close it again. The bastard.“I'm not completely fucking helpless,” I mutter.“I didn't say you were.” His voice softens slightly, and he rests a hand against my shoulder. “But you've been badly injured, Max. You're allowed to need help.”I stare at him. It's such a simple thing to say, and he says it so matter-of-factly, as though the idea of me needing someone isn't remotely unusual. But it is.I'm an Alpha. I'm supposed to be strong, capable, the one people turn to when things go wrong. I'm not supposed to need someone to help me stand up so I can take a fucking piss.Especially not Xander. Not after everythin

  • Marked by fate   Chapter 670

Max's POVI try to shift my weight in the chair, hoping to find some position that doesn't feel like it's crushing my fucking hip, but the movement only makes everything worse. My abdomen pulls painfully as I attempt to straighten my back, and the narrow metal armrests dig into my sides, leaving me nowhere to move. I'm so tired now that even holding myself in this awkward position feels like more effort than I can manage.Fuck me, this was a mistake. I should have used the makeshift bedpan like the doctor wanted.I try again, pressing my palms against the armrests to take a little weight off my arse, but my arms are shaking, and the effort sends another horrible pulling sensation through my stomach. A low groan escapes before I can stop it.“Max?”Xander's voice comes from behind me, and I immediately stop moving.“Hmm?”“You all right?”“Yeah, fine,” I mutter, trying to make my voice sound vaguely convincing. There's a pause, and then I hear him sigh.“Bullshit.”I almost smile.Godd

  • Marked by fate   Chapter 669

Max's POVWe're moving again, and the nurses push me towards the restrooms at the back, but as we turn the corner towards the door, Xander's there, right in front of us, looking freshly showered, his hair still damp. His hazel eyes widen as he sees us, then he takes in the chair and frowns slightly.“Alpha,” one of the nurses greets him respectfully.“What are you up to?” he asks, his frown deepening slightly, his tone sharp.I mean, I thought that was fairly obvious, to be honest. But clearly he doesn't want me here. I can feel Zahra's bond pulling towards the door at the end of the corridor. Perhaps he doesn't want me upsetting her any more. And why would he? He's the one who's been here holding her together while I've been off feeling sorry for myself. I wouldn't trust me near her either. Fuck, I don't blame him, to be honest.“Alpha Hunt needs the bathroom,” the other nurse says, and I cringe inwardly.Wonderful. That's exactly how I wanted my first proper conversation with my ex

  • Marked by fate   Chapter 668

Max's POVMy heart feels like it's crumbling into even smaller splinters than before. How can I even begin to fix this?‘Start by apologising,’ Medus urges me, his anxiety skyrocketing as he thinks about his mate believing we want to reject her. He's right. I know he's right. But how the fuck do you apologise for making your mate believe she's so unwanted that you're going to reject her? What words could possibly undo weeks of leaving her to believe that?‘Now. Go to her now.’I'm about to explain that I don't think I can walk when the doctor appears round the side of the car.“Ta-da!” he says far too cheerily, waving his hand like he's revealing something incredible.I take in the small metal chair. I stare at it. It's tiny, narrow, with tiny wheels like a filing cabinet's, not the ones you usually see on a wheelchair.I'm fairly certain I've seen sturdier things abandoned beside supermarket trolley bays. And whatever poor bastard designed this thing clearly wasn't expecting anyone a
