Zarha's POV

Samuels keeps slipping precariously from Zanthe’s shoulders as she runs. So far he’s managed to right himself, but I can hear his laboured breathing and the pained wheezing whenever Zanthe’s movement jolts him too hard. My ears strain for the beat of his heart while Zanthe’s swivel to pick up anything and everything around us.

My mind wanders to what just happened. The fight between the Beta and Samuels, and Levi... it was all so sudden.

He’s dead.

  • Marked by fate   Chapter 660

Zahra's POVHe's alive. He's fucking alive, and he's awake. Oh, thank the Goddess!‘Mate,’ Zanthe hums in satisfaction as she gently purrs for Medus, the rumble low in my mind. The word jerks me back to my senses. Mate. And memories flood back into my exhausted and panicked brain. Max walking away, the anger and disgust on his face back at the lake house. The utterly devastating heartbreak as my mate ran away from me in the forest.Zanthe is still purring, so fucking happy to have Medus close again, and now that those memories have come rushing back, I almost resent her for it. How can she be so pleased when I can still remember every horrible second of what happened between us? I know she missed him. Fuck, I missed him too, but that doesn't mean I've forgotten what he did.I pull back, reality crashing back in. Max's face scrunches as I retreat, his brows furrowing, and something that looks horribly like hurt flashes through those green eyes. He reaches for me, his hand coming up tow

  • Marked by fate   Chapter 659

Max's POVPain. Fuck, the pain is back. I feel like my body is encased in cement. It's heavy and almost impossible to move. My body still feels restrained somehow, but that fact doesn't seem to fully register. It's like my mind flits onto other observations before I've processed what it means. The billowing roar is still there, as are the vibration and the bumping, but there's no more scent of blood and no more sound of fighting wolves.Zahra! Her beautiful face flashes through my mind, and I reach for her down the bond. It's shadowed. Gentle emotions drift down it like they are muted, dialled down from usual, and the difference confuses me. It's more like what I was getting back in Eclipse, but I can scent her here, close to me. Her heartbeat reaches me beneath everything else, steady and familiar, and some of the tightness in my chest eases before I can stop it. I know it's not distance that's turned down the focus. Is she asleep?I check the emotions again. She's calm, exhausted. T

  • Marked by fate   Chapter 658

Max's POVTerror fills my chest like ice, and it feels like my lungs have frozen solid. I try to move, try to clutch at my sternum, to rub some warmth back in or check my heart still beats inside my rib cage, but I can't move, and the fear intensifies. It claws at my frozen chest until something finally clicks through the fog. This part is mine. This fear is fucking mine. But if this is mine, then the other...?The world feels heavy again, like a weighted blanket falling over my face, and darkness envelops me.A wolf's roar startles me. I try to blink open my eyes, but they feel like they're cemented closed. The cold in my chest is still there, the fear almost overwhelming. I feel my body sliding, but I'm helpless to stop it. Fuck, am I falling? A nauseating feeling envelops me, and I think I might be sick.“AIDEN!”The scream cuts through everything. Something inside me reacts before I even know why, my heart kicking painfully against my ribs as I fight whatever is holding me down. T

  • Marked by fate   Chapter 657

Tobias's POVEvery muscle in my body locks, and beside me Lincoln jerks upright at exactly the same moment, his half-finished coffee forgotten in his hand.“What the fuck?” he breathes, his eyes snapping to mine.I don't answer because he already knows. The anxiety we've been feeling from Zahra all night changes so violently there can be no mistaking it. This isn't worry about Max anymore. It isn't frustration, impatience or fear of what might happen. This is panic, sharp, sudden and fucking real.Thor surges forward so hard that my vision flickers, and a growl tears from Lincoln's chest beside me as Lex reacts to exactly the same thing.“She's in trouble,” Lincoln says, his voice suddenly hard.“I know.”My phone is in my hand before the words are properly out of my mouth. I call Zahra and press it straight to my ear, listening as it rings with no answer.“Come on,” I mutter, ending the call and immediately trying again. “Come on, angel. Fucking answer me.”Still nothing.“I'm callin

  • Marked by fate   Chapter 656

Tobias's POVI put the food in the back, keep one coffee for myself and check my phone again.Nothing.My jaw tightens as I look towards the road.‘She's still safe,’ Thor reminds me.‘I know.’‘Then stop staring at the road as if you can make her appear.’‘Don't act like you wouldn't run straight back there and carry her out yourself if I let you have control right now.’Thor just huffs in the back of my mind rather than dignifying that with a proper response.I take a drink of coffee, trying to keep calm. Why haven't they left yet? I can't feel her getting any farther away through the bond. Her location feels roughly the same as before, and it's beginning to worry me even more than I already fucking was.Lincoln returns a couple of minutes later, and the look he gives my phone tells me he's noticed the same silence I have.“Still nothing?” he asks quietly, keeping his voice low with so many of his pack moving around us.“No.”His eyes drift towards the road, his expression tightenin

  • Marked by fate   Chapter 655

Tobias's POVWe head towards the food court with everyone else, keeping enough distance between us that nobody looking our way would see anything more than the Crown Prince walking beside Shadow's Alpha. After twelve miles sitting alone together in the car, where touching him had already started to feel natural, having to remember that nobody knows about us is fucking strange. Lincoln isn't ready for his pack to know yet, though, and after everything he's already asked them to accept tonight, I'm not about to take that choice away from him.The mundane normality of the place feels fucking bizarre. Bright signs advertise burgers, fried chicken, coffee and sandwiches as though there aren't armed warriors positioned outside every entrance. Music plays quietly through speakers in the ceiling, almost drowned out by the voices of Shadow wolves moving through as quickly as possible, and the smell of chips, coffee and grilled meat hangs heavily in the air.Nobody is treating this like a prope
