LOGINZahra's POVAnother wolf bursts out of the trees. It goes for Aiden's truck again, but one of our wolves intercepts it before it reaches the road. They collide hard enough that I hear the impact from inside the car, both of them disappearing into the undergrowth in a blur of fur and teeth.Another takes its place almost immediately.Fuck. There are so many of them.Everywhere I look, there are wolves running through the trees, darting towards the road and disappearing again as our warriors meet them. I can't tell whether we're actually getting through them or whether more are simply arriving faster than we can leave them behind. The earpiece crackles again, and Xander's head tilts slightly as he listens.“Copy,” he says.“What?”“They're dropping the trucks back. All of them.”“What?”I look forwards. There are at least three Task Force trucks ahead of Aiden, maybe four. I don't even know anymore. There are more behind Zach, their headlights bouncing in my mirrors every time I look ba
Zahra's POVI glance out of the back window, but I can't see anything except the convoy behind us.Fuck, I can't do this. The tension is going to kill me. I have no idea how far we are from Night Howlers still. Brant's sending some warriors to greet us and bring us in, but how far away are we from them?More howls break through the nervous quiet of the car, and I glance out of the windows. It looks like there's more movement in the trees, but I'm not sure if it's just me seeing things in the dark. That's what I'm going to tell myself anyway.Shit.I glance behind us again. Warriors are leaping off the back of the Task Force truck, shifting mid-air and charging off into the trees.I mean, that's fucking cool. I'm fucking good at a flying shift, but these guys don't even stumble when they hit the ground at this speed. One second, they're human bodies throwing themselves off the back of a moving truck, the next they're wolves landing on all fours and immediately breaking into a sprint.I
Zahra's POVOnce we're out of the gate, the road is fairly straight...Zanthe is pacing, her ears swivelling constantly as she searches for threats, but she's quiet now, keeping her anger to herself until we make it to safety. We reach the pack gates. They're still open from when the others left. The open gates look fucking wrong. Shadow has spent generations keeping enemies out, and now we're driving away and leaving the front door wide open. There's no point closing them. It's not like the gates would keep an entire rogue army out for long anyway. We slow fractionally to make the ninety-degree turn onto the main road, but not much. I glance back and see the trucks behind us swinging wildly as they make the turn. Now we're on the main road, the wolves move to the verge and the edge of the trees. Strictly speaking, they should be running through the trees, away from prying human eyes, but there's no way any of them will do that today. And I doubt Edwardo will order it, even if we pass
Zahra's POVEdwardo’s commanders start barking orders to the warriors around us. Several jump into the trucks parked on the grass behind the SUV, while others shift into their wolves, clearly preparing to run out around us.My eyes snap back to Max.He's unconscious. Sedated. He can't shift. He can't fight. He can't even fucking wake up if something happens. We have to get him out of here.Now.My adrenaline spikes. This is it.The rogues are actually fucking here. Not some distant threat we have hours to prepare for anymore. They're seven kilometres away, and we're out of time.Xander's eyes meet mine as he steps out of the car. “We're ready.”Fucking just in time too.The doctor climbs into the middle row of seats, one nurse beside him, while the other sits in the back beside Max on the makeshift bed. Xander climbs into the driver's seat, and I take the passenger seat beside him.My brother and the other Blood Moon guys get into Zach's truck, while Tobias's unit get into Aiden's tru
Zahra's POVI watch as Zach and Oscar help Xander and the nurses wheel the hospital bed out towards the waiting SUV. They've collapsed the back seats down and removed one of the middle row, then the warriors have laid some of the hospital bed mattresses down to make a sort of makeshift bed.Seeing Max like this makes something inside me ache. I've spent weeks trying not to think about what it would feel like to see him again, and in every version that managed to creep into my head, he was still the same huge, strong, infuriating Alpha who walked away from me.Not this. Not unconscious, pale and covered in bandages while four people carefully manoeuvre him into the back of a fucking car because he's too badly injured to move himself.I have no idea where the bags that were in the trunk have gone, but I'm hoping they were just moved into the truck before the others left. To be honest, right now, that's the least of my worries.“I've given him a bolus of sedation and pain relief, so he s
Xander's POVShe puts her phone back into her pocket before looking back up, at where the doctor works on max. “Once you've finished stitching, Doctor, what else will he need before we can move him?”The nurses both stop what they're doing and turn to the doctor. He doesn't stop stitching.“A couple of days sedated in the ICU with antibiotics and round-the-clock monitoring. But given the circumstances, I think we could try to transport him as soon as he's bandaged up. His blood pressure is already improving. We can monitor him in transport and continue to infuse him. But I really think his best chance will be to move him to a local pack and get him into a hospital as soon as possible.”For the last hour, I've been thinking about getting him stable enough to put in the fucking car with us. Catch the convoy. Keep moving. It hadn't occurred to me that getting him stable might mean taking him somewhere else entirely.I glance down and see Zahra looking back at me. She chews on her botto
