The floor moved beneath Rei's feet.

At first, she thought it was another tremor. Then the walls hummed, and the enormous machine beneath the laboratory answered with a deep mechanical pulse that seemed to travel through her bones.

Dominic grabbed her hand.

"Stay close."

"I'm not going anywhere."

Marcus rushed toward the central console, his face drained of color.

"Voss activated the lower chamber."

Dominic looked at him. "Then shut it down."

"I can't."

"Try."

"I've been trying for twenty years."

Another pulse shook the room.

The monitors flickered.

Numbers raced across every screen before stopping on the same message.

OMEGA SIGNAL DETECTED.

ALPHA RESPONSE DETECTED.

DUAL-BLOODLINE ACTIVATION CONFIRMED.

Rei stared at the words.

"What does dual-bloodline activation mean?"

Marcus didn't answer immediately.

Dominic stepped toward him.

"Tell her."

Marcus looked at Rei.

"The machine doesn't run on electricity."

Rei frowned.

"Then what does it run on?"

"Instinct."

The word made her stomach turn.

Marcus pointed toward the two tables.

"Blackthorn discovered that the strongest Alpha and Omega responses aren't created by medication. They're created by emotion."

Rei stared at him.

"Emotion?"

"Fear. Anger. Desire. Protection. Trust."

Dominic's jaw tightened.

"They've been studying us."

"Since childhood."

Rei looked at the machines surrounding them.

"So every time I was afraid..."

"The system collected the response."

"And every time Dominic protected me?"

"Same thing."

Rei felt sick.

They hadn't merely been watching her.

They had been measuring her.

Every frightened heartbeat.

Every surge of adrenaline.

Every instinctive reaction to Dominic.

Everything had been data.

Dominic stepped closer to her.

"Then we're going to give them something they didn't expect."

Marcus looked at him.

"What?"

Dominic's eyes flashed silver.

"Nothing."

The machine suddenly screamed.

A wave of energy erupted from the center of the chamber.

Rei cried out as an intense pressure seized her chest.

Dominic caught her.

"Rei!"

She couldn't breathe.

Something inside her was waking.

Not a voice.

Not a thought.

A memory.

She saw a woman standing beneath the same white lights.

Long dark hair.

Blood on her hands.

Her grandmother.

Elara.

Rei watched helplessly as the memory unfolded.

Elara was chained to the table.

Marcus was younger, standing across the room.

Adrian stood beside Dr. Voss.

But there was another person in the room.

A little boy.

Dominic.

He was crying.

And beside him was a little girl.

Rei.

Six years old.

She watched her younger self reach for Dominic's hand.

The memory shifted.

Elara looked toward them.

"Run."

Young Rei shook her head.

"No."

Elara smiled sadly.

"You have to."

Young Dominic stepped in front of Rei.

"I'll protect her."

Elara's expression changed.

She looked directly at Marcus.

"You see?"

Marcus said nothing.

Elara continued.

"He doesn't need to be taught."

Then the memory shattered.

Rei gasped.

She returned to the laboratory.

Dominic was staring at her.

"You saw it too."

She nodded.

"You protected me."

"I remember."

Marcus closed his eyes.

"I hoped you would."

Dominic turned on him.

"You knew."

"Yes."

"You knew we were children."

"Yes."

"You knew they put us in that room."

Marcus's voice broke.

"I knew."

Dominic's anger exploded.

"You let me believe I was broken!"

"I was trying to keep you alive."

"You could have told me!"

"And they would have killed you!"

The room went silent.

Marcus looked at his son.

"They killed everyone who knew the truth."

Dominic's breathing slowed.

"Who?"

Marcus looked toward the machines.

"Your uncle Adrian."

Dominic's expression changed.

"He's alive."

"No."

Marcus shook his head.

"The man you saw wasn't Adrian."

Rei stepped forward.

"Then who is he?"

Marcus stared at the door.

"His replacement."

Dominic frowned.

"What?"

"Blackthorn created him."

Rei's blood ran cold.

Marcus continued.

"They took Adrian's memories, his blood, his genetic records, everything they could use. Then they created a biological replica."

Dominic stared at him.

"You're telling me that man isn't my brother?"

"No."

"Then where is Adrian?"

Marcus looked at Rei.

"He's the reason Blackthorn needs you."

Rei felt her heart stop.

"What does that mean?"

"Adrian was the first successful Alpha experiment."

Dominic's face hardened.

"And?"

"He survived the process."

Marcus swallowed.

"But something went wrong."

The lights flickered again.

A monitor turned on by itself.

A man's face appeared.

Adrian.

Except his eyes were completely black.

Rei stepped backward.

"That's him."

Marcus shook his head.

"No."

The man on the screen smiled.

"Hello, Marcus."

Dominic moved in front of Rei.

The man laughed.

"You still don't understand."

Marcus stared at the screen.

"You're not Adrian."

"No."

The man's smile widened.

"I'm what Adrian became."

The machine began pulsing faster.

Marcus whispered, "They transferred his consciousness into the system."

Rei's blood went cold.

The voice continued through the speakers.

"And now I need her."

Rei looked at the screen.

"Why?"

The man's expression became almost gentle.

"Because your grandmother destroyed the first system."

He paused.

"You are going to complete the second."

Dominic stepped forward.

"You'll never touch her."

The voice laughed.

"You still think this is about touching her."

The monitors changed.

A diagram appeared.

Two figures.

One Alpha.

One Omega.

Connected by a glowing line.

Then the system displayed a third symbol.

COMMAND NETWORK

Rei understood.

They didn't want her to become a weapon.

They wanted her to become the connection between every Alpha and Omega in their world.

A living network.

A bridge.

And Dominic was the key that would make it possible.

Her voice trembled.

"If they activate this, what happens?"

Marcus answered.

"Every Alpha connected to the network will be susceptible to whoever controls the system."

"Blackthorn."

"Yes."

Rei stared at the machine.

"And me?"

Marcus looked at her.

"You would be trapped inside it."

Dominic's eyes darkened.

"Then we destroy it."

Marcus shook his head.

"It's already connected to her."

Dominic looked at Rei.

A thin silver line had appeared beneath the skin of her wrist.

It was moving toward her shoulder.

Rei stared at it in horror.

"What is that?"

Marcus's voice became urgent.

"The connection."

Dominic grabbed her wrist.

"How do we stop it?"

Marcus looked at the machine.

"There is one way."

"Tell us."

"The original chamber."

Dominic frowned.

"This is the original chamber."

"No."

Marcus pointed toward the floor.

"The real chamber is beneath this one."

Rei stared.

"There's another level?"

"Three."

Dominic looked toward the floor.

"How do we get there?"

Marcus walked toward a small panel.

He entered a code.

Nothing happened.

He tried again.

Still nothing.

Then Rei stepped forward.

Without knowing why, she placed her palm against the panel.

The entire laboratory went silent.

The machine recognized her.

A voice whispered through the speakers.

FIRST OMEGA CONFIRMED.

The floor opened.

A staircase descended into darkness.

Marcus stared.

"It's awake."

Dominic looked at Rei.

She looked back at him.

Neither of them knew what waited below.

But there was no turning back.

Dominic took her hand.

This time, Rei didn't pull away.

Together, they descended.

At the bottom of the staircase was a massive circular chamber.

In the center stood an ancient stone structure covered in symbols.

Rei recognized them immediately.

They were the same symbols she had seen in her nightmares since childhood.

Marcus stopped behind them.

"This is where it began."

Dominic looked at the stone structure.

"What is it?"

Marcus's voice was barely a whisper.

"The original bond chamber."

Rei approached it.

The symbols began glowing.

One by one.

Then the chamber filled with a woman's voice.

Elara.

"Rei."

Rei froze.

"Grandmother?"

The voice answered.

"If you are hearing me, then they have succeeded in awakening the chamber."

Rei's eyes filled with tears.

"How do I stop it?"

There was a long silence.

Then Elara answered.

"You don't."

Rei stared.

"Then what do I do?"

The symbols burned brighter.

"You finish what I started."

Dominic stepped closer.

"What did she start?"

Elara's voice changed.

"Freedom."

The stone chamber shook.

A hidden door opened.

Behind it was a wall covered with hundreds of names.

Rei stepped closer.

Her breath caught.

The names belonged to Omegas.

Generations of them.

Some had been crossed out.

Some had dates beside them.

At the bottom was a final name.

ELARA ANDERSON — 2009

Then, beneath it, freshly illuminated in silver:

REI ANDERSON — 2026

Rei stared at her name.

Then another name appeared beside it.

DOMINIC VALE — 2026

Dominic looked at her.

The chamber doors slammed shut.

And the voice of the thing living beneath Blackthorn whispered through the darkness.

"Let the final bond begin."

The creature stepped out of the black water. For the first time, Rei could see him clearly. He wasn't some mindless beast. He was a man.Or he had once been one.He stood nearly seven feet tall, his broad body covered with scars that looked centuries old. Golden markings ran from his throat down his chest and disappeared beneath the dark water dripping from his skin. Heavy iron bands circled his wrists, though the chains attached to them had long since broken. His black eyes fixed on Rei.Then he looked at Dominic.Something almost like recognition passed across his face."Finally."Dominic stepped in front of Rei."Who are you?"The stranger's gaze remained on him."You carry his blood.""Whose?"The creature smiled."Mine."Dominic froze.Marcus's voice came from behind them."Caelan."The creature turned.Marcus looked terrified.Rei had never seen that expression on him before. Not fear for himself.Fear of something he had believed could never return."Who is Caelan?" Rei asked.

The sound beneath the laboratory floor grew louder. It wasn't mechanical. At least, not entirely. There was something organic beneath the vibration, something that seemed to pulse through the walls like a second heartbeat. • Marked by the Alpha Captain   The Memory Room

For several seconds after the screen went black, neither Rei nor Dominic moved. The hallway had fallen strangely silent. The students who had been whispering moments earlier were now staring at them, sensing that whatever had just happened was bigger than another argument between an Alpha and an Omega. Even Selena had stopped smiling.Dominic kept his eyes fixed on the blank screen."I remember her," he said.Rei's heart tightened."My grandmother?"He nodded slowly."Not clearly. It's like trying to see something underwater."He pressed his fingers against his temple."There was a room. White walls. A window that wasn't really a window. She was sitting on the floor.""What was she doing?""Talking to me.""What did she say?"Dominic closed his eyes."She told me not to be afraid."A shiver moved through Rei."Did she know you?""I think so.""How?""I don't know."He opened his eyes."But I remember you."Rei stared at him."Me?""Not you as you are now."He took a slow breath."You

By the time they reached the road, the rain had stopped completely. The clouds were beginning to break apart, allowing thin strips of morning sunlight to reach the fields. It should have felt peaceful after the night they had survived, but Rei couldn't shake the feeling that the quiet was only temporary. She stood beside the road with her arms wrapped around herself while Dominic examined the damage to the SUV."The back window is gone," he said. "One tire is losing air.""Can it still drive?""For a while.""Then we don't have a while."Dominic looked at her."You're serious about going back.""Yes.""You understand what we're walking into.""I understand that my mother is still being hunted, my stepfather is working with the people who have been watching me, and someone has spent years turning my family into a secret."She looked toward Blackthorn."I'm done waiting for someone else to explain my life to me."Dominic studied her for several seconds. Then he nodded."All right."Mara
