Chapter 2

Autor: Liora Z
"True feelings?"

Over the phone, I let out a bleak, cold laugh.

"Maya, did you forget how I ended up by his side?"

I was a low-ranking half-breed.

And Chloe was my half-sister, the high and mighty pureblood Alpha heiress.

She was as dazzling as the sun, and Sterling's fated mate.

Seven years ago, Chloe's throat was ripped out in a rogue attack.

That day, the supreme Alpha who controlled the entire North aged ten years in an instant.

My family needed the territory alliance.

So, they threatened my mother's life.

They boxed me up like a cheap prize and shoved me at Sterling.

When I first arrived by his side, I walked on eggshells.

I was terrified of being kicked out. I was even more terrified that my mother, controlled by the family, would be killed because of it.

I started wearing the white dresses Chloe loved. I sprayed her favorite rose perfume. I even poorly imitated her spoiled tone.

Until one day, Sterling slammed me against the wall in the Packhouse hallway.

His tall body pressed me hard. His strong thigh pushed between my legs.

The overwhelming aura of a supreme Alpha made it almost impossible for me to breathe. His intense pheromones made me tremble all over.

His fingers pinched my chin hard, forcing me to look up.

"Stop acting, Harper. You are not her. This imitation of yours only disgusts me."

I squeezed my eyes shut in terror, thinking I was dead.

But the next second, he let go. He smoothed out my messy collar.

He looked down at me, his tone returning to its usual gentle cruelty.

"Be yourself. Stay, and be a proper mate. But I will never love you."

For that single word "stay," I suppressed my true nature and stayed with him for seven full years.

For these seven years, I was like a soulless puppet, perfectly fulfilling the duties of a fiancée.

Until I got the acceptance letter from the High Design Academy in Halo City.

That was the first time in my life I wanted to live for myself.

Holding my ticket and waiting to board at the airport, I thought I had completely let him go.

But just as the final boarding call echoed through the speakers, a tall figure savagely broke through the gate.

It was Sterling.

The usually arrogant Alpha wasn't even wearing his suit jacket. His tie was pulled loose and crooked.

With red-rimmed eyes, he yanked me fiercely into his burning embrace.

"Don't go, Harper. Please."

He buried his face in the crook of my neck, his voice hoarse, even choking back a sob.

"If you leave, my world will be completely empty. I thought I would never love again in this life, but I found out I've unknowingly fallen in love with you. I can't lose someone again."

He cupped my face and kissed me hard.

That kiss was full of an Alpha's feverish, desperate, and intense possessiveness.

He pried my teeth apart, brutally ravaging my breath, as if wanting to devour me whole.

For someone like me, who grew up starved of love, that kiss and that confession were deadly poison.

I fell for it.

I tore up my ticket to freedom, gave up my studies, and stayed behind heart and soul, ready to become his Luna.

"But Maya, it was all fake."

Sitting in the SUV, my tears finally broke like a dam, smashing against the back of my hand.

"Last month, I moved into the master bedroom on the top floor of the Alpha estate. He was taking a shower, and his safe wasn't fully locked."

On the other end of the phone, Maya held her breath.

"Inside was a dark leather diary." I gritted my teeth, my voice shaking. "Every page was packed with one name. Chloe."

I would never forget the words I read that day.

They were like sharp razor blades, slicing away my pitiful remaining pride until nothing was left.

He wrote in the diary:

The elders want me married. I only agreed because the half-breed has your eyes. Chloe, I wish you would tear me apart in my sleep. Just so I could see you again.

And the handwriting on the last page was so deep it almost pierced the paper, as if written in blood.

[Chloe, I promise you. No matter who stands beside me as Luna, my soul and my body will forever remain loyal to you alone.]

The date it was signed... was the exact night he tearfully begged me to stay at the airport.

Maya gasped over the phone, too shocked to say a word.

How cruel.

His vulnerability and tears at the airport. His feverish, deep kiss in front of everyone.

It was all just to fill the void after losing his first love.

He used the most affectionate disguise to tie me, his useful stand-in, firmly to his side.

"I tried to lie to myself."

I clutched the fabric over my chest tightly, as if that was the only way to ease the ripping pain in my heart.

"The day I found the diary, I spent the whole night mentally preparing myself. I told myself, as long as he doesn't kick me out, as long as he's still willing to pretend to love me, I can pretend nothing happened."

Even if he kept the necklace with Chloe's lingering scent close to his heart, I could turn a blind eye.

I closed my eyes.

In the fitting room, his heavy panting roared in my ears again.

His burning body heat, his large hands gripping my waist, his fangs piercing the skin of my artery...

"But today..." I choked back a sob, almost grinding my teeth to dust.

"When he pinned me in front of the mirror... forcefully claiming me... and in his passion, he moaned Chloe's name..."

I took a deep breath and violently wiped the tears from my face.

"I realized I just can't do it."

"You truly love me?"I laughed out loud. The sound rang sharp on the empty balcony. "Sterling, do you even know what love is?"Sterling's eyes were red. His raspy voice shook. "Harper, I messed up. I lost Chloe and thought my heart was dead. Then you left. I finally realized what I lost."He paused. He struggled to find the words. "You saved me. Seven years of your care. Your sweetness. Your patience. I can't live without you."Tears rolled down his cheeks. This arrogant Alpha looked so weak in front of me. "I admit it. I used you as her shadow. But things are different now, Harper. My wolf only wants to submit to you."Sterling tried to step closer. I held up my hand to stop him. "Sterling, do you know what this is?" I looked at him calmly. He shook his head blankly. "This is just a bruised ego. You are just a greedy Alpha losing his favorite toy." I tore his pity party to shreds. "I would have killed for these words years ago." I watched his panicked eyes. I felt nothing insi

I adjusted to life in Halo City quickly. Nora pushed me to embrace my wild side. I stopped suppressing my hybrid wolf. She gave me unique design ideas. That creativity was always locked away under the North's strict rules. One month later. The Halo City Emerging Designers Exhibit. "Harper, are you sure about tonight?" Nora asked with worry. "This is the biggest design event in the city." I was trying on my dress for the night. It was a backless gown, blazing red like fire. The woman in the mirror glowed with health. Her eyes sparked with fierce confidence. "Of course." I traced the wild, handmade embroidery on the skirt. "I designed it."One month of freedom fully awakened my inner wolf. Wild inspiration poured out of me. My work pulsed with brand-new life. The hall was brightly lit. Elites from everywhere gathered around. I wore my red dress. I chatted and laughed with some top neutral-city designers. "Your new line is stunning, Harper. That raw power is peak wolf aesthetic

"Harper! Over here!" A bright voice called out from the crowd. I dragged my small suitcase out of the terminal. A girl in a bright yellow tee waved at me. She had curly chestnut hair. Her smile was as bright as the morning sun. "I'm Nora. The Halo Design Academy sent me to pick you up." She rushed over. "Oh my goddess, you are even prettier than your picture!"I wasn't used to this raw kindness. Back North, even close friends cared about bloodline rules. "Thank you," I replied politely. Nora was a Beta. But she didn't look down on my hybrid blood at all. "I saw your design portfolio. Your lines are so wild yet delicate! It's pure genius!" she gushed. "The professors can't wait to meet you."We hopped on the bus to the academy. I looked out the window. This city was nothing like the strict North. Wolves of all bloodlines chatted freely on the streets. Nobody used their Alpha aura to crush others. The air felt clear. Young designers rushed by with their portfolios. No one bow

My phone screen lit up in the dim cabin. The glare stung my eyes. It was a text from Sterling."Crawl back and apologize to her right now. Do that, and tomorrow's mating ceremony goes on as planned. Do not test my patience, Harper."This was the man I loved for seven years. An arrogant, top-tier Alpha to his very core. He would never admit fault. He would never show weakness to anyone. Just hours ago, he cursed me out. All for a cheap replacement. He always looked down on me. His forgiveness felt like throwing a bone to a stray. He was so sure. He thought I would crawl back begging. Just like I did for the last seven years. He thought I needed him. He thought I needed our fated bond.In the past, I would give in out of pure fear. I would cry and apologize. I would put on that heavy white dress. I would play the perfect puppet. But now? I just felt sick looking at those cold words. My stomach churned. This fake love disgusted me. I didn't reply. I calmly popped open my phone

Tears completely blurred my vision. My heart felt like it was gripped tight by a large, thorn-covered hand, throbbing with pain.Seven years of foolish delusions finally met a pathetic answer at this moment. The mate mark he kept promising was fake. The Alpha loyalty he was so proud of was fake.He didn't go to the border to fight rogues last night. He went to a trashy hotel, holding a stand-in who looked exactly like my dead sister, having wild sex.Thankfully, it was almost all over. There were less than twenty-four hours left until my flight to Halo City.Dawn broke. Sterling still hadn't returned to the Packhouse. The elders were already frantically rushing the final steps of the coronation ceremony.I ignored them.I ordered a cab and headed straight for the pack's corporate tower.I was going to see him one last time. To get an answer that would kill my hope completely.I pushed open the heavy mahogany doors of the Alpha's office.Sterling was sitting behind his massive desk. See

Dead silence on the other end of the phone.Dozens of seconds later, Maya sent a screenshot of a first-class e-ticket to Halo City. The flight time was tomorrow night, right after my coronation ceremony ended. Her attached message was just one line: " I already moved your mother to a safe house. Go, Harper. Don't look back."Cold air rushed in as Sterling slid into the driver's seat.He caught a glimpse of my lit screen and a calm smile curled his lips."What are you looking at? Honeymoon tickets to Stardrop Island or Halo City?"I quickly locked the screen, forcing down the sting in my eyes, and put on a flawlessly obedient smile."Haven't decided yet." I softly changed the subject. "Pull over at the intersection. I want to buy a few boxes of the blood-berry tarts the elders like."Sterling paused as he started the engine. He gave me a deep look. There was no love in his eyes, only extreme satisfaction towards a handy tool."Harper, you're always so sensible." He sighed, half-joking.
