Chapter 8

Author: Liora Z
"You truly love me?"

I laughed out loud. The sound rang sharp on the empty balcony.

"Sterling, do you even know what love is?"

Sterling's eyes were red. His raspy voice shook. "Harper, I messed up. I lost Chloe and thought my heart was dead. Then you left. I finally realized what I lost."

He paused. He struggled to find the words.

"You saved me. Seven years of your care. Your sweetness. Your patience. I can't live without you."

Tears rolled down his cheeks.

This arrogant Alpha looked so weak

"You truly love me?"I laughed out loud. The sound rang sharp on the empty balcony. "Sterling, do you even know what love is?"Sterling's eyes were red. His raspy voice shook. "Harper, I messed up. Your patience. I can't live without you."Tears rolled down his cheeks. This arrogant Alpha looked so weak in front of me. "I admit it. I used you as her shadow. But things are different now, Harper. My wolf only wants to submit to you."Sterling tried to step closer. I held up my hand to stop him. "Sterling, do you know what this is?" I looked at him calmly. He shook his head blankly. "This is just a bruised ego. You are just a greedy Alpha losing his favorite toy." I tore his pity party to shreds. "I would have killed for these words years ago." I watched his panicked eyes. I felt nothing insi

I adjusted to life in Halo City quickly. Nora pushed me to embrace my wild side. I stopped suppressing my hybrid wolf. She gave me unique design ideas. That creativity was always locked away under the North's strict rules. One month later. The Halo City Emerging Designers Exhibit. "Harper, are you sure about tonight?" Nora asked with worry. "This is the biggest design event in the city." I was trying on my dress for the night. It was a backless gown, blazing red like fire. The woman in the mirror glowed with health. Her eyes sparked with fierce confidence. "Of course." I traced the wild, handmade embroidery on the skirt. "I designed it."One month of freedom fully awakened my inner wolf. Wild inspiration poured out of me. My work pulsed with brand-new life. The hall was brightly lit. Elites from everywhere gathered around. I wore my red dress. I chatted and laughed with some top neutral-city designers. "Your new line is stunning, Harper. That raw power is peak wolf aesthetic

"Harper! Over here!" A bright voice called out from the crowd. I dragged my small suitcase out of the terminal. A girl in a bright yellow tee waved at me. She had curly chestnut hair. Her smile was as bright as the morning sun. "I'm Nora. The Halo Design Academy sent me to pick you up." She rushed over. "Oh my goddess, you are even prettier than your picture!"I wasn't used to this raw kindness. Back North, even close friends cared about bloodline rules. "Thank you," I replied politely. Nora was a Beta. But she didn't look down on my hybrid blood at all. "I saw your design portfolio. Your lines are so wild yet delicate! It's pure genius!" she gushed. "The professors can't wait to meet you."We hopped on the bus to the academy. I looked out the window. This city was nothing like the strict North. Wolves of all bloodlines chatted freely on the streets. Nobody used their Alpha aura to crush others. The air felt clear. Young designers rushed by with their portfolios. No one bow

My phone screen lit up in the dim cabin. The glare stung my eyes. It was a text from Sterling."Crawl back and apologize to her right now. Do that, and tomorrow's mating ceremony goes on as planned. Do not test my patience, Harper."This was the man I loved for seven years. An arrogant, top-tier Alpha to his very core. He would never admit fault. He would never show weakness to anyone. Just hours ago, he cursed me out. All for a cheap replacement. He always looked down on me. His forgiveness felt like throwing a bone to a stray. He was so sure. He thought I would crawl back begging. Just like I did for the last seven years. He thought I needed him. He thought I needed our fated bond.In the past, I would give in out of pure fear. I would cry and apologize. I would put on that heavy white dress. I would play the perfect puppet. But now? I just felt sick looking at those cold words. My stomach churned. This fake love disgusted me. I didn't reply. I calmly popped open my phone

Tears completely blurred my vision. My heart felt like it was gripped tight by a large, thorn-covered hand, throbbing with pain.Seven years of foolish delusions finally met a pathetic answer at this moment. The mate mark he kept promising was fake. The Alpha loyalty he was so proud of was fake.He didn't go to the border to fight rogues last night. He went to a trashy hotel, holding a stand-in who looked exactly like my dead sister, having wild sex.Thankfully, it was almost all over. There were less than twenty-four hours left until my flight to Halo City.Dawn broke. Sterling still hadn't returned to the Packhouse. The elders were already frantically rushing the final steps of the coronation ceremony.I ignored them.I ordered a cab and headed straight for the pack's corporate tower.I was going to see him one last time. To get an answer that would kill my hope completely.I pushed open the heavy mahogany doors of the Alpha's office.Sterling was sitting behind his massive desk. See

Dead silence on the other end of the phone.Dozens of seconds later, Maya sent a screenshot of a first-class e-ticket to Halo City. The flight time was tomorrow night, right after my coronation ceremony ended. Her attached message was just one line: " I already moved your mother to a safe house. Go, Harper. Don't look back."Cold air rushed in as Sterling slid into the driver's seat.He caught a glimpse of my lit screen and a calm smile curled his lips."What are you looking at? Honeymoon tickets to Stardrop Island or Halo City?"I quickly locked the screen, forcing down the sting in my eyes, and put on a flawlessly obedient smile."Haven't decided yet." I softly changed the subject. "Pull over at the intersection. I want to buy a few boxes of the blood-berry tarts the elders like."Sterling paused as he started the engine. He gave me a deep look. There was no love in his eyes, only extreme satisfaction towards a handy tool."Harper, you're always so sensible." He sighed, half-joking.
