A sigh left my lips as I closed my eyes to soak up all the rays of the sun touching my skin.

Usually, it would make me feel calm, but it was not a usual day.

I had been sitting near the fountain for a few minutes now and everything around me felt like a blur. I could see people talking, walking past me, but their words were not reaching my ears.

For the first time, I did something I had never done before, I skipped a class. I could already imagine Mom shaking her head in disappointment.

Being inside the four walls was taking all the oxygen left inside my body.

Being near the fountain, away from others, was the only place that gave some peace to the storm inside my head.

The vivid images of what happened in the forest and what could happen in the future kept playing in front of my eyes whenever I closed them.

On the other hand, Lucien was nowhere to be found.

Weirdly, I felt a pang of disappointment....or maybe I just wanted some answers from him.

I moved my gaze from the sky to the water inside the fountain.

I gently touched the surface of the water with my index finger. A sense of relief washed over me. The water touched my skin in a familiar way, like it knew it already, the water started moving strangely under my touch.

My eyes widened in surprise as I witnessed water making circles around my finger.

The waves started growing like they were dancing to a familiar song.

"What are you doing here?"

I quickly removed my hand from the water, like a thief who had been caught stealing something by the police.

"I-I was just sitting here."

Kai removed his glasses to stare at me for a moment before saying, "Didn't you have a class?"

"Yeah..um..it got cancelled."

"You look like you have fought a ghost and lost the battle," Kai took a seat next to me.

Only if he knew the truth.

I shrugged in response, "I didn't get enough sleep last night."

"That's the third time you've said this," I knew Kai was studying my face, and I made sure to avoid eye contact.

"You need to focus on your classes and not on my sleeping schedule."

"And, you need to stop avoiding my questions," Kai did not wait before replying.

I took a moment before answering, the sound of birds and the constant chatter of students filled the silence between us.

I finally looked at Kai, "You are overthinking."

"No, I am thinking just enough," he raised his brow.

I opened my mouth to answer but he put his bag on the ground. He was not leaving without getting answers.

"Did something happen that you're not telling me?"

"I-"

The wind shifted around me. The sound of birds and people disappeared.

A strange awareness crawled over my skin.

Like I was being watched.

My eyes quickly shifted towards the corner of the school building.

He stood near the corner of the building, still enough to be missed if I wasn’t already looking for him.

Students moved past him without a second glance.

But he didn’t belong here.

Not because of what he wore.

Not because of how he looked.

Just... because everything around him felt normal, making him hard to notice among the crowd, he was too silent...too careful...too mysterious, but not in a good way.

His eyes were focused on me, he was not blinking but neither was I.

The only difference was that he knew his surroundings too well. He picked a spot from where he could watch everyone without getting noticed easily.

But the dark demeanor he carried felt out of place, like he didn't belong among us.

Maybe he didn't and I should keep my distance from him, a tiny voice said loudly in my head.

"Who is he?"

I noticed Kai looking between us, "Do you know him?"

I shook my head in a no and quickly stopped looking at Lucien, "No."

Kai moved his gaze from me towards the man, "Then why does he look like he knows you?"

Something changed, now Lucien was staring at Kai but not like how he was looking at me earlier.

His eyes were darker, which I thought was not possible. He was looking like a predator watching its prey.

Kai was not breaking eye contact either.

Lucien finally smirked and walked away, giving one final look at me.

I let out a sigh of relief.

"Are you sure you don't know him?"

"No."

"You said you had a class with him?"

I inhaled a sharp breath, "Yeah...just like many other students...it doesn't mean I know everyone?"

Kai did not look happy with my answer but gave a nod, “I’m telling you, there’s something wrong with that guy.”

Kai wasn’t wrong.

There was something wrong with Lucien. And I was well aware of that but that wasn't the part that scared me.

"Kai, would you keep that notebook away?" We were sitting in our usual spot for lunch, the only difference was Kai and his constant scribbling. He kept writing in his infamous notebook like a madman. He would then draw something, scratch his head, cut something and rewrite it in a handwriting only he could understand. My words didn't fall in his ears. I picked up a nugget and threw it at him. It hit his head and fell onto his notebook. He paused, picked up the nugget and glared at me before shoving it in his mouth. "What are you even doing, now?" I tried to read what he was writing. "The murders," Kai drew something. I stopped eating. "What about them?""I am seeing a pattern here and yet it is not making any sense."Things left making sense for me a long time ago, I scoffed at the thought. I was thankful for Kai not asking questions anymore about my weird behaviour. I had a good sleep last night, there were no whispers. I was not sure if it was a good thing or just the silen

  • Marked by the Moon   10. Stay away from trouble

Running could never solve anything. It was true. But I spent the rest of the day with Kai...avoiding his questions and running from him was my only option. He got caught up with some college activity and it gave me a free pass to run away from. I was feeling a huge weight of guilt settling on my shoulders but I wanted to figure out everything before dragging anyone else into this mess. Kai and I were already in the parking area when he received a text. Even though he asked me to wait for him here...I decided to do the exact opposite thing. I waited until I was sure he had entered the main college building. The parking ground was almost empty. A few vehicles were parked here and there. Most of the students had already left. I started walking away from Kai's car but my feet stopped on their own once my body realised I was no longer alone. It was surprising how my body knew before my mind about his presence. I licked my lips nervously but stood in my place, waiting for him. “Yo

  • Marked by the Moon   8. There was no trace of her.

"Lucien".The name lingered longer than it should have. The name shouldn't feel familiar but it didn't feel like it belonged to a stranger. The man's presence stirred an unknown feeling inside my heart. Maybe the feeling was survival instinct from the dangers lurking around him?I sat on the edge of my bed, staring down at myself.Dried mud clung to the hem of my sky-blue pants, flaking off in small pieces onto the floor. I was too tired to change my clothes. But the brown mud was a reminder of what had happened in the forest. It was not in my head. The forest. The creature, the way it moved. And him.My fingers curled slightly against the fabric. He killed someone.“What was that…” I muttered, more to myself than anything else. The thought of asking Kai crossed my mind.I grabbed my phone but stopped after noticing the time.It was 5 am.Everything about this moment felt wrong.Still, I unlocked my phone and opened the news. There were no headlines, no reports about another death.

  • Marked by the Moon   7. Who are you

There was a sudden shift in our surroundings. The air had gotten more dangerous. We were no longer the only ones standing uninvited on the forest ground.Something was moving behind the trees, something that couldn't be seen, it only showed its presence by the rustling sound of leaves. My eyes finally caught a glimpse of something or someone moving behind the trees at an unnatural speed.I gasped."Shh," the stranger who was hiding me behind himself whispered. The mark on my wrist flared up, and I held it with my other hand, not looking away from the trees."What is that?" I whispered as it circled around us."Something that shouldn't have found you."I felt as though we were trapped. Unknowingly, I took a few steps away from the stranger who was just waiting for the figure to appear. The forest went silent....too silent. I could feel my heart beating loudly.Suddenly, a figure lunged towards me.I gasped, stumbling back, but before I could even process what I was seeing, the stranger

  • Marked by the Moon   6. Find it

I just wanted to sleep. I felt like I had not slept properly in days, which was not wrong. The mark was not burning anymore....I ran my fingers softly over the mark, remembering his touch. I looked outside at the sky, the clouds were moving slowly....just like the time in the classroom. I glanced at the professor but his words worked as a lullaby. My eyes started getting heavy with every passing moment, the sound of the insects coming from outside was not helping either. "Find it."My eyes opened instantly and I looked around myself. Everything was the same, the students were either listening to the professor or making notes of what he was saying. My breath started getting heavy as I realised the whispers were back...but they were no longer the whispers. They were words, but it felt like a few people were chanting the words over and over again. But find what? I wanted to ask. I started focusing on the voices, hoping they would say something helpful, but the voices were stuck on
