LOGINHey beautiful readers, If you are still here...a huge thank you. Let me know what you think about the story so far. ❤
Something had changed. Kai had been acting strange all day.He was quieter. His eyes screamed that he had not slept properly. As someone who would spend nights tossing, turning, and running away from her dreams, I knew the look on his face too well. He wasn't making jokes, wasn't annoying me every five minutes, and worst of all, he kept checking his phone whenever he thought I wasn't looking.Something was definitely wrong. We had not talked about the photograph or the symbol either. We were walking out of the college campus, but Kai hadn't said a word, he was in his world. As though it were not enough, he suddenly stopped walking and turned to face me, "Why don't you go home? I have to go somewhere else."I looked at him without blinking. "You want me to go home?""Yeah.""Without you?" I asked. Ever since everything had started happening, he made sure to keep me company. Hearing these words was not a good sign. "Where do you have to go?" I decided to ask, even though he was not
The next morning, Kai was already waiting for me outside the college library. He looked tired. Not normal tired. His eyes were red. The kind of tired that came from spending too much time staring at something you probably shouldn't be looking at."You look horrible," I told him."Thank you," he replied, picking up the large backpack beside his feet. The books were peeking out from inside as he tried to close the bag, but when there was no success, he removed three books from inside. I stared at the bag, "What are you doing?""Research."I took a moment before asking, "About the photograph?"His expression changed for half a second. "Yes."Something about his reaction made me suspicious, but before I could ask anything else, he handed me those books, "Hold these."I looked down at the three books in my arms, "Why?" They were not enormous like the ones in his bag. "Because I have more.""Where did you get all these?" I frowned, he was not the one to rely on the books. According to him
The next morning was not any different. I was pretending the fingerprints on my wrist didn't exist. I covered them with the sleeve of my shirt and went to college as if nothing had happened. It was easier that way. At least, that was what I kept telling myself, while trying to ignore the headache. But my plan of pretending nothing had happened was succesfully ruined by Kai.But his presence at the same time was somehow enough to make everything feel slightly less terrifying.I had barely finished telling him about the fingerprints when he stared at my wrist for almost a full minute. Then he looked at my face...then at my wrist again...then back at me."I have a question," he finally started.I raised an eyebrow. "What?""Why do supernatural things keep happening to you when I'm not around?"I blinked twice."That's your question?" I kept myself from screaming the words at him. "Yes," he shrugged."Kai.""What?" He looked genuinely confused. "I'm your best friend. I should at least g
The next morning, I decided I was going to stay busy...very busy.If I kept my mind occupied, maybe I wouldn't think about what happened last night.Whoever said keeping yourself occupied with work could scare away dreadful thoughts was entirely wrong. If I kept myself busy, maybe I wouldn't remember that Lucien was standing in my room, maybe I wouldn't remember the way he looked at me when I asked him the question. Were you going to kill me? I shook my head.No.I wasn't going there.I had classes. That was enough.I spent most of the morning going through my previous notes, rewriting the ones I had barely understood the first time. But it was not enough, I started making notes for the next class. Then I went through the previous notes again.I knew it was pointless. I wasn't even reading half the words I was writing. My mind kept going back to him.If you were the threat the prophecy described...I pressed my pen harder against the paper. My hand didn't stop moving aggressively on
The room had become too quiet.I could hear my own breathing in the deafening silence. Lucien was still standing near the window, but he wasn't saying anything either.I kept looking at the covered mirror. Maybe it was easier to look at the cloth than at him, even though I could feel his burning gaze on the side of my head. A small part of me wanted to remove the cloth, at least I knew the red eyed girl was more consistent than him. "Was I the reason you were here?" I finally asked, breaking the silence.I heard the sound of his heavy sigh, "Tonight?"I nodded."Partly.""Partly?" I repeated. He didn't answer.I turned around to finally face him."I came here because I was worried about you," his voice was smooth as silk, but how could I trust the words coming out of his mouth?"You came here because you wanted to see if I was okay after what happened at the lake."His jaw tightened. "Yes."I swallowed and laughed a humourless laugh. "Because you thought I might be the witch from
I had been staring at the ceiling for what felt like hours, but my mind refused to slow down. The lake, the red eyed girl, Lucien, the water following me...everything was connected somehow, but I still couldn't figure out how.I turned towards the window. The mirror was still covered with the beige cloth.I hadn't removed it since the last time I saw her in the mirror. I didn't want to see those haunting red eyes again.I pulled the blanket closer to myself and closed my eyes tightly.Maybe I should have gone to sleep. Maybe pretending everything was normal would make it easier.A sudden shift in the air made my eyes wide open again. My heart skipped a beat. I slowly turned towards the window. The curtains moved slightly. How did I forget to close the window? And then I saw him, in the darkness, moonlight was falling on half of his face, highlighting his sharp features perfectly. I sat up immediately."Are you serious?" I whispered the words to myself. He didn't move from his spo
I just wanted to sleep. I felt like I had not slept properly in days, which was not wrong. The mark was not burning anymore....I ran my fingers softly over the mark, remembering his touch. I looked outside at the sky, the clouds were moving slowly....just like the time in the classroom. I glanced
The night brought something else with darkness.Questions.I didn't move away from the window, I stood there as the sun bid its farewell and the night replaced the day. I could not take my eyes away from the forest, it was as though something was calling me. Something or someone was there, waiting
Something had changed. Not around me, inside me.“You were never meant to be here.” The words kept haunting me all night.Everything was the same, and yet nothing felt the same. The mark was no longer burning, it had gone silent. It was as though nothing was on my wrist. But I could not say the sam
It was 7:45."You are late."I knew it was coming."My classes will start late today," I replied, avoiding eye contact.Mom could read the lies hiding behind the words effortlessly."We all have to follow a routine," Mom folded her arms. It was a warning and I knew better than to argue with her.I
