Chapter 1 One Last Goodbye

Evan Shore
Audrey's POV

"I'm so fed up with her using her grandmother to force me to stay with her every day!"

Hunter Jones's words pinned me firmly in place as I stood outside the door listening to him.

Hunter and I grew up together, and he confessed his feelings to me in college. We had been friends for 18 years and lovers for eight. Yet, never had I imagined that it would all be a lie.

My knuckles turned white as I gripped the doorknob. Suddenly, I felt dizzy. It wasn't until my phone vibrated that I snapped back from my blanked-out state.

"Ms. White, your Grandma is undergoing emergency treatment. Please come as soon as possible."

When I rushed to the hospital, my grandmother had already been wheeled out of the emergency room.

I calmed down as my eyes landed on her loving face. However, what the doctor said next came like a bolt from the blue.

"The patient is dying, so please say what you need to say quickly."

My footsteps felt unsteady like stepping on cotton as I walked toward the door to my grandmother's ward. After I pushed the door open, I saw my grandmother smile at me. "Audrey, you're here. Where's Hunter? Why didn't he come with you?"

Although my grandmother looked much better, I knew it was just an illusion.

"Grandma, he's busy with work. I'll call him right now."

I made more than a dozen phone calls that day. The disappointment in my grandmother's eyes only intensified when all the calls went straight to voicemail.

I called again and again, refusing to give up. Finally, Hunter answered the phone.

However, he snapped at me before I could even speak, "Audrey, didn't I tell you I was busy? Why do you keep calling me?"

My voice trembled as I choked with sobs, "Hunter, Grandma's dying. Can you—"

Before I could finish speaking, Hunter interjected, "Stop it, Audrey! How dare you lie about something like this! I'm very busy today, so let's talk about it tomorrow."

Before the call ended, I heard Sarah Moore's voice. She was calling Hunter, "Honey," intimately.

My grandmother immediately noticed that I was upset. She gently stroked my hair, just like she did when I was a child and said softly, "Audrey, my greatest wish in this life is to ensure your happiness. I'll always be with you no matter what."

I lay down next to my grandmother, just like I did when I was a child. I stayed like that until the ECG machine emitted a piercing sound.

I couldn't speak. My throat was tight with sorrow. My vision blurred as tears streamed down my face like broken pearls.

"Deepest condolences to you, Ms. White."

I sat blankly outside the morgue, wanting to call Hunter over to say goodbye to my grandmother.

Only after I called did I find that I had been blocked.

Hence, I tried reaching him through other ways, but none of my methods succeeded.

Eventually, I saw Sarah update her social media.

In her post, she was walking on the beach. Hunter was holding her hand and smiling gently.

'I was just feeling down, but my husband came with me to the beach overnight to get some fresh air.' She wrote.

I immediately unlocked my phone and bought a flight ticket for three days from now.

Since they both were so in love, I supposed I need not make a fool of myself.

Farewell, Hunter.

It was yet another bright and sunny day. Lucas and I agreed to go to a nearby town to buy our daily necessities together.I opened the window just as I have been doing ever since I've taken to staying here. To my surprise, I saw a familiar yet unfamiliar figure standing outside the yard.Hunter's haggard state was certainly a rare sight to me. He met my gaze, took a few quick steps forward, and gripped the fence tightly."Audrey, I've finally found you."The moment I saw him, my good mood for the day immediately soured. A look of annoyance inadvertently appeared on my face. It seemed that Hunter actually saw it as he seemed to be hurt by it. His whole body began to tremble, and his voice choked as he rushed to explain, "Sarah and Jerry lied to me. I had no idea that Grandma had passed away. Grandma has been so kind to me. I couldn't possibly neglect her. I just…"He stood there with his lips parted, struggling to put his reasons into words."I'm sorry, Audrey."Meanwhile, I lo

Sarah excitedly rushed to the meeting place when she got Hunter's call."Honey, I have some good news for you," she said, her tone laced with excitement. "I'm pregnant. It's yours. We're going to be parents."Hunter held the pregnancy test report indifferently and scoffed, "I always use protection. Besides, I've been taking male contraceptive injections for a long time to prevent myself from accidentally impregnating you. So, whose child is it that you're carrying?"Sarah's face turned stark white. Finally, she understood why she didn't get pregnant despite sleeping with Hunter so many times. Regret crawled at her chest, for she wouldn't have thought of getting pregnant by another man out of desperation if she had known about it.Still, she didn't expect Hunter to have used protections the whole time he was with her. Jerry certainly hadn't said a thing about it."Jerry's spilled all the beans that needed spilling. So what about you? Do you have anything to say?"Sarah started sh

Hunter returned to the house he shared with Audrey in a daze. The once cozy living space was now drab, and the flowers on the windowsill had withered as well. Tears streamed down his face as he collapsed to the floor.Just then, the doorbell rang. Hunter hastily scrambled to the door."Audrey!" he called out in a hopeful tone.Unfortunately, there was only a deliveryman holding a small box standing before him instead of the figure he was hoping for."Excuse me, are you Mr. Hunter Jones? You have a parcel from Ms. Audrey White."Hunter eagerly signed his name and accepted the package when he heard Audrey's name.He was dumbstruck after opening the box. That was because there was a fake marriage certificate, Audrey's engagement ring, and several printed images of Sarah's past social media posts in the box.It turned out that Audrey had long known about his marriage registration with Sarah. Each of his affections toward Sarah was posted on social media and became the weapon Sarah

"Lucas, you're back!" Nora greeted the man before introducing him to me."Audrey, this is my brother, Lucas."She happily bounced over to her brother. "Lucas, this is Audrey, my friend from the East that I'd mentioned to you before."After that, she turned to me and said, "Audrey, this is elk meat. It's delicious. You should stay here for dinner tonight!"As she spoke, she carried the elk meat into the kitchen, eager to set up the dinner. As she flitted away, Lucas stretched a hand to me."Hello."Since he had his back to the light, his tall figure seemed to loom over me. His blond hair shimmered under the dim lighting, and his blue eyes resembled a tranquil sea. Yet, there was no denying that he was as warm as Nora. When he learned that I was about to go to the beach alone to take photos, he swiftly offered me to come aboard his boat. "The scenery at sea is exceptionally breathtaking. I can take you diving nearby, and we can go fishing for fresh sea urchins," he said.Althoug

  • Marriage by Betrayal   Chapter 7 Something Is off With Jerry

Hunter bought some nutritional supplements for Grace and a gift for Audrey. On his way to the hospital, he kept thinking about how Audrey would react when she saw him.'Will she cry aggrievedly? Or will she glare at me angrily? Maybe… she'll throw herself into my arms?'A faint smile played on his lips as he thought about it.Hunter swore he would definitely make it up to her now that he was back, feeling bad for putting Audrey through all sorts of misery recently.Halfway through the journey, he suddenly received a call from Jerry."Mr. Jones, uh… Ms. White had checked her grandmother out of the hospital this morning, and I don't know where they are now."Hunter instinctively retorted, "That's impossible. Grandma is too weak to endure any strains. How could she possibly be discharged from the hospital?"On the other end of the phone, Jerry stammered and couldn't answer. He simply said that the hospital had handled the discharge procedures that morning and that he had only just

We have safely sent Ms. White back home."Hunter felt a lot more relieved upon hearing his answer. After all, Audrey's grandmother, Grace Smith, was still in the hospital. So, Audrey definitely won't leave. Therefore, he figured he could just make it up to her when he got back. However, Hunter couldn't wait any longer before the honeymoon was even over. He returned three days early and removed Audrey from his blocked contacts list.'Audrey, are you finally aware of your mistake?' He texted.Unfortunately, his unease gradually intensified when his text message went unanswered for hours.
