Chapter 1

After the banquet ended, Madre found me standing alone in a corner, tears glistening in her eyes.

"Vera, I know you're a good girl."

I didn't answer. Instead, I remembered how, in the final moments of my previous life, Madre had received the news of my condition and still couldn't be bothered to come see me one last time.

My gaze fell on my younger sister, Arianna Valenti, as she walked over with Dario Lancieri.

"I'm sorry, Vera," she said. "This is all my fault…"

When I was born, our family had been ambushed. My parents had grabbed Arianna and fled, leaving me forgotten in the car.

The rival faction had found me and taken me away, but they soon decided I was more trouble than I was worth and abandoned me by the roadside.

A kind civilian had taken me in and raised me as her own. It wasn't until a few years ago that my family finally found me.

If our family's power hadn't been declining and they hadn't needed a marriage alliance to secure their position, my parents probably would've forgotten they had another daughter at all.

Arianna's hand flew to her mouth as she began to cry. Dario immediately pulled her into his arms.

"Don't cry, tesoro," Dario said, pressing a tender kiss to her forehead. "This is what she deserves."

Then he turned toward me, undisguised disgust evident in his eyes. "You agreed to this yourself, so don't go back on your word."

Madre wiped away her tears, picked up a champagne glass, and walked over.

"This is certainly something worth celebrating," she said. "Arianna is finally getting what she's always wanted."

Papa turned to Dario and started discussing the wedding date. Then he glanced at me, who had remained silent the entire time, and smiled.

"Since Arianna's wedding is happening this month, why don't we have Vera's wedding on the same day?"

The satisfaction on Madre's face told me exactly how much she liked the idea.

Still, with all the guests watching, she put on a show of concern.

"But wouldn't that be a little unfair to Vera?"

Papa laughed.

"Vera's future husband is the Bellini family's elderly Don," he said. "A man of that wealth and status? The sooner she marries him, the better. He'll give Vera a life other people can only dream of.

"Vera, I couldn't be happier for you!"

He said it with such enthusiasm, proudly proclaiming his love for his daughter. Seeing this, several guests nearby raised their glasses and came over to offer their congratulations.

I heard the older members of the family and guests from the various factions whispering among themselves.

"The Bellini family's elderly Don? He's a brutal man. Absolutely ruthless."

"I heard he's nearly 60. Poor Vera," a guest muttered. "She only just came back to the family, and now she's being sacrificed for a marriage alliance."

In my previous life, I would've slipped away to my room and cried where no one could see me.

This time, I simply picked up another glass of champagne and took a slow sip.

When the banquet ended, Dario and Arianna walked ahead while Papa and Madre walked beside them, discussing the wedding details.

No one noticed me trailing behind.

I watched Dario open the car door, crouch to straighten Arianna's dress, and help her get in.

She lowered her head with a sweet smile and planted a kiss on his cheek.

"Arianna, seeing how much Dario loves you makes us so happy for you," Papa said, patting Madre's hand as he leaned over to whisper something to Arianna.

Just like in their previous life, they didn't notice the daughter who was always walking a few steps behind them.

I looked down at my dress. The hem was far too long because it was Arianna's dress.

Madre had told me that it would take time for a tailor to alter a dress, so for now, I could only borrow Arianna's gown.

Everyone kept praising Arianna for being kind enough to lend me her dress, yet no one once asked whether I wanted to wear something meant for her.

Dario was about to close the car door when he noticed me.

"Vera," he said, walking over with a frown. "I know Don Bellini's much older than you, but his wealth and status are enough to give you a life most people could only dream of."

He lowered his voice and continued, "Once it's all over, I'll make sure you have a way out."

"Got it," I simply replied.

He looked up at me, clearly surprised by my response. After all, the Vera he remembered would've argued with him until her voice was hoarse.

After a long silence, Dario turned and walked away.

Papa helped Madre into the car. Once they drove off, my phone buzzed with a message.

"We forgot you weren't in the car. Get yourself a ride home."

I'd grown used to being forgotten like this in my previous life.

The moment I stepped through the front door, Arianna came rushing toward me, practically glowing with excitement. A sparkling diamond ring gleamed on her finger.

"Vera! Dario just proposed to me," she squealed. "He said he was so grateful to God for bringing me into his life."

She threw her arms around me. "Thank you for giving him to me, Vera!"

I smiled at her, then returned to my room.

Once the door closed behind me, I slowly shut my eyes.

This time, I'd give them exactly what they wanted. I'd put everything back the way it was supposed to be.

Only after Dario had disappeared from sight did Luca finally relax, the tension in his presence easing. He stared at the apple pie in my hand without saying a word, then took my hand."Did he hurt you?" he asked. "Call me the next time you run into him. I'll make sure he disappears for good."I smiled and shook my head, then leaned in to press a soft kiss to the corner of Luca's mouth. "What are you doing here?" I asked. He gently pinched my cheek, then carefully blew on the red marks around my wrist. "I was afraid you might get lost," he finally said. What a liar. He was obviously worried about me. Luca and I walked home hand in hand. When he opened the door, Sofia had already prepared a sumptuous dinner and was waiting for us. This was the home I'd longed for in my previous life but had never had. …After Arianna found out that Dario was divorcing her, she sent me messages filled with curses and insults. "Make Dario and his wife disappear from this city," Luca orde

  • Married Off to the Dying Don   Chapter 12

When Dario came looking for me, I was standing outside a shop buying apple pie. I'd been eating too many sweets lately, and my teeth had started hurting. Luca had forbidden Sofia from making me apple pie, so I'd had no choice but to sneak out and buy one myself. As I walked away with the pie in hand, I saw Dario standing outside the shop. He looked unkempt, with stubble covering his face. His wrinkled suit was stained with marks from who knew where.I frowned and tried to walk around him, but he grabbed my arm. "Vera! I know the whole truth now. I was wrong about you."His grip was so tight that it hurt."I'll divorce Arianna right now," he continued. "I was wrong. I'm sorry! Please forgive me. Can we start over?"I struggled to free myself and shot him a glare. "Excuse me, sir," I said coldly. "I don't know you. Please move.""Vera, I was wrong!" Dario cried. "I'm sorry. I'll give you anything you want. Just divorce Luca and come back to me—"Before he could finish, some

  • Married Off to the Dying Don   Chapter 11

A week after Luca and I got married, Dario and Arianna were already on the verge of divorce. The two families had held their weddings on the same day, but the wedding Arianna had been looking forward to—the one she'd hoped would make her famous throughout high society—became a laughingstock almost as soon as it began. On the day of the wedding, the Bellini family's Don officially announced his retirement, handing full control of the family over to his son, Luca. The news sent every reporter rushing to my wedding. Arianna was so furious that she overturned the wedding cake right there and then. The departing reporters happened to capture the scene on camera, and news of how my family had brought me back to fulfill a marriage arrangement quickly spread. My parents and Arianna became the subject of ridicule throughout high society. On their first night as newlyweds, Arianna and Dario got into a heated argument. "Why didn't you have someone keep those reporters away? Why was

  • Married Off to the Dying Don   Chapter 10

That evening, Sofia prepared a feast, along with the apple pie I loved. I sat at the dining table, unsure where to begin. When I first returned to the Valenti family, I didn't know proper table manners. I was scolded at every meal until, eventually, Papa accused me of ruining the atmosphere at the family table and made me eat with the maids instead. Not long after that, Madre made me lose weight. Little by little, I became accustomed to eating only a few bites before returning to my room. When Sofia brought the final dish to the table and saw that I still hadn't touched anything, she looked uneasy."What's wrong, cara mia? Do you not like the food?"I smiled and shook my head. "There's just too much. I can't finish it all.""Don Bellini said you're too thin, so he told me to prepare more food for you," Sofia explained. Ever since I moved in, she had been researching new recipes for me every day. Before bed, she even brought me a glass of milk at just the right temperature.

  • Married Off to the Dying Don   Chapter 9

Madre had said that Luca's family was unimaginably wealthy, and she hadn't been exaggerating. An entire wedding boutique in the heart of the city was one of the Bellini family's most insignificant businesses. "Don Bellini, the wedding dresses are ready," the designer said.I stared at the five racks filled with wedding gowns, my eyes widening in disbelief.A smile crossed Luca's face as he gestured for me to step forward with a gentlemanly flourish. "Signorina Valenti, this first rack holds ten wedding gowns based on the previous designs."This rack contains limited-edition gowns that Don Bellini had us source from all over the world. Each one is completely one of a kind."I spent a long time choosing before finally settling on one. Luca nodded and turned to the designer. "Then we'll take this one. Have the others made to her measurements and delivered to the house."My heart fluttered a little."I'd like to try it on," I said, turning to him. I stepped into the fitting

Luca was swamped with work until late into the night. It was my first time sleeping on a bed this soft, yet I tossed and turned, unable to fall asleep. Just then, I heard footsteps coming up the stairs. I hesitated, wondering whether I should go out and wish Luca good night when I heard the door next to mine close. Shaking my head, I buried myself deeper into the pillows and closed my eyes.…The next morning, I woke up and stepped out of my room to find Luca dressed in casual clothes. He looked completely different from the sharply dressed man I'd seen the day before. His golden hair fell loosely over his forehead, softening his otherwise sharp features. "Buongiorno," he said with a small nod. Downstairs, Sofia smiled and greeted us. "Breakfast is ready. Come down!"I sat at the table, where Sofia handed me a glass of warm milk. Luca placed an egg on my plate. I glanced at him, but he simply picked up his coffee and took a sip. "This afternoon, we're going to try on
