Chapter 4

Author: Soleil
On the day of the wedding, there were no flowers at the entrance, and no red carpet.

Papa and Madre kept urging me to hurry into the car, worried that any delay might offend the Bellini family.

Arianna showed up in an extravagant wedding gown, a jeweled crown resting on her head. Her eyes were red-rimmed as she came over and took my hand.

"Vera, I'll pray to God every day that you'll be happy."

I pulled my hand away, not wanting to deal with her.

Arianna froze, clearly not expecting that reaction. She turned and threw herself into Dario's arms, covering her face as she began to cry.

"Is Vera blaming me because I'm not the one marrying into the Bellini family?"

Dario gently kissed away the tears from her cheeks, then turned toward me with a frown.

"You agreed to the marriage arrangement yourself. So why are you taking your anger out on Arianna?"

I didn't respond. Instead, I looked down the road, where a convoy of Rolls-Royces had appeared in the distance.

As one black car after another pulled up, the guests who had come for the wedding were stunned. They stared wide-eyed at one another, whispering among themselves.

"Wasn't she supposed to be marrying some old man? How can they afford something this extravagant?"

Papa and Madre were stunned as well. Arianna bit her lip, clutching Dario's hand tightly.

Dario frowned as soon as he recognized the cars. A silver family crest was emblazoned on each door—the unmistakable emblem of the Bellini family.

A bad feeling rose in his chest. Almost instinctively, he took two steps forward.

The lead car rolled to a stop, and the driver got out and opened the door.

A blond-haired man with piercing green eyes stepped out. His features were sharp and striking, his face chiseled and angular. His black suit accentuated his tall, imposing figure, and his presence was so commanding that no one dared meet his gaze.

One by one, everyone lowered their heads and avoided his gaze.

This was the Bellini family's new Don, Luca Bellini.

Rumors claimed that Don Bellini had been bedridden by a serious illness and was on the verge of death, with the Bellini family on the brink of a change in leadership.

Yet the man standing before them looked barely past 30. There wasn't the slightest sign of illness about him at all.

Dario hurried forward, disbelief in his voice as he asked, "Don Bellini, what brings you here?"

Only after Dario had disappeared from sight did Luca finally relax, the tension in his presence easing. He stared at the apple pie in my hand without saying a word, then took my hand."Did he hurt you?" he asked. "Call me the next time you run into him. I'll make sure he disappears for good."I smiled and shook my head, then leaned in to press a soft kiss to the corner of Luca's mouth. "What are you doing here?" I asked. He gently pinched my cheek, then carefully blew on the red marks around my wrist. "I was afraid you might get lost," he finally said. What a liar. He was obviously worried about me. Luca and I walked home hand in hand. When he opened the door, Sofia had already prepared a sumptuous dinner and was waiting for us. This was the home I'd longed for in my previous life but had never had. …After Arianna found out that Dario was divorcing her, she sent me messages filled with curses and insults. "Make Dario and his wife disappear from this city," Luca orde

When Dario came looking for me, I was standing outside a shop buying apple pie. I'd been eating too many sweets lately, and my teeth had started hurting. Luca had forbidden Sofia from making me apple pie, so I'd had no choice but to sneak out and buy one myself. As I walked away with the pie in hand, I saw Dario standing outside the shop. He looked unkempt, with stubble covering his face. His wrinkled suit was stained with marks from who knew where.I frowned and tried to walk around him, but he grabbed my arm. "Vera! I know the whole truth now. I was wrong about you."His grip was so tight that it hurt."I'll divorce Arianna right now," he continued. "I was wrong. I'm sorry! Please forgive me. Can we start over?"I struggled to free myself and shot him a glare. "Excuse me, sir," I said coldly. "I don't know you. Please move.""Vera, I was wrong!" Dario cried. "I'm sorry. I'll give you anything you want. Just divorce Luca and come back to me—"Before he could finish, some

  • Married Off to the Dying Don   Chapter 11

A week after Luca and I got married, Dario and Arianna were already on the verge of divorce. The two families had held their weddings on the same day, but the wedding Arianna had been looking forward to—the one she'd hoped would make her famous throughout high society—became a laughingstock almost as soon as it began. On the day of the wedding, the Bellini family's Don officially announced his retirement, handing full control of the family over to his son, Luca. The news sent every reporter rushing to my wedding. Arianna was so furious that she overturned the wedding cake right there and then. The departing reporters happened to capture the scene on camera, and news of how my family had brought me back to fulfill a marriage arrangement quickly spread. My parents and Arianna became the subject of ridicule throughout high society. On their first night as newlyweds, Arianna and Dario got into a heated argument. "Why didn't you have someone keep those reporters away? Why was

That evening, Sofia prepared a feast, along with the apple pie I loved. I sat at the dining table, unsure where to begin. When I first returned to the Valenti family, I didn't know proper table manners. I was scolded at every meal until, eventually, Papa accused me of ruining the atmosphere at the family table and made me eat with the maids instead. Not long after that, Madre made me lose weight. Little by little, I became accustomed to eating only a few bites before returning to my room. When Sofia brought the final dish to the table and saw that I still hadn't touched anything, she looked uneasy."What's wrong, cara mia? Do you not like the food?"I smiled and shook my head. "There's just too much. I can't finish it all.""Don Bellini said you're too thin, so he told me to prepare more food for you," Sofia explained. Ever since I moved in, she had been researching new recipes for me every day. Before bed, she even brought me a glass of milk at just the right temperature.

Madre had said that Luca's family was unimaginably wealthy, and she hadn't been exaggerating. An entire wedding boutique in the heart of the city was one of the Bellini family's most insignificant businesses. "Don Bellini, the wedding dresses are ready," the designer said.I stared at the five racks filled with wedding gowns, my eyes widening in disbelief.A smile crossed Luca's face as he gestured for me to step forward with a gentlemanly flourish. "Signorina Valenti, this first rack holds ten wedding gowns based on the previous designs."This rack contains limited-edition gowns that Don Bellini had us source from all over the world. Each one is completely one of a kind."I spent a long time choosing before finally settling on one. Luca nodded and turned to the designer. "Then we'll take this one. Have the others made to her measurements and delivered to the house."My heart fluttered a little."I'd like to try it on," I said, turning to him. I stepped into the fitting

Luca was swamped with work until late into the night. It was my first time sleeping on a bed this soft, yet I tossed and turned, unable to fall asleep. Just then, I heard footsteps coming up the stairs. I hesitated, wondering whether I should go out and wish Luca good night when I heard the door next to mine close. Shaking my head, I buried myself deeper into the pillows and closed my eyes.…The next morning, I woke up and stepped out of my room to find Luca dressed in casual clothes. He looked completely different from the sharply dressed man I'd seen the day before. His golden hair fell loosely over his forehead, softening his otherwise sharp features. "Buongiorno," he said with a small nod. Downstairs, Sofia smiled and greeted us. "Breakfast is ready. Come down!"I sat at the table, where Sofia handed me a glass of warm milk. Luca placed an egg on my plate. I glanced at him, but he simply picked up his coffee and took a sip. "This afternoon, we're going to try on
