Chapter 3

Author: Soleil
With the wedding drawing near, Dario came to our house more and more often.

Each time, he claimed he was there to bring gifts for Arianna, but every now and then, I felt his gaze linger on me.

One day, he arrived carrying a box of freshly baked apple pie, still warm. He handed it to Arianna, but she pushed the box back.

"I never eat cheap food like this."

Dario froze for a moment before instinctively looking at me.

The day before, he had passed by a bakery and remembered how, in his previous life, I would often stare at apple pies with longing. So before he knew it, he'd bought one.

"Since Arianna doesn't want it, you can have it," Dario said.

I glanced at the box he was holding out to me.

"You can ask the maid to throw it in the food waste bin," I said, lifting my chin.

With that, I turned and went upstairs without sparing Dario another glance.

Dario stared at the box in his hands, wondering if he'd been out of his mind to go out of his way to buy something so beneath his.

The day before my wedding, Madre knocked on my door and handed me an old wedding dress that had already lost its luster.

"The tailor's busy making Arianna's gowns and wedding dress," she explained. "He doesn't have time to take your measurements.

"This is the wedding dress I wore when I married your Papa. It's a little old, but your future husband is already 60. It will do."

I glanced at the dress. The pearls along the sleeves were coming loose, the hem was frayed, and dust had become embedded in the lace trim so deeply that I couldn't brush it away.

"No need, Madre. I already have a dress."

Madre hadn't expected me to refuse. Her expression darkened as she placed the dress on my bed.

"You and Arianna are different," she said, frowning. "She's the pride of our family, and all the guests will have their eyes on her. But no one cares about your marriage. Stop being so picky!"

With that, she turned and left.

I quietly closed the door, then opened my wardrobe.

Inside hung a pure white dress. Under the light, the satin shimmered like champagne in motion, its smooth fabric cinched elegantly at the waist, while delicate beadwork gathered around the neckline.

Alberto had delivered it earlier that day. He'd told me it had been custom-made to my measurements.

A knock sounded at the door again.

I walked over and found Dario outside.

"The wedding is tomorrow. Don't even think about causing trouble," he warned, awkwardly rubbing the bridge of his nose. "Arianna has suffered enough. But this time, she won't have to know what pain is ever again."

I almost laughed at Dario's absurd claims.

Arianna had grown up by Papa and Madre's side, received an excellent education, and become the most accomplished young lady in the family.

I, on the other hand, had been left to fend for myself from childhood. I delivered pizzas, washed dishes, pulled weeds—I did every kind of work imaginable.

Even after my family found me, they gave me the maid's room to live in and Arianna's unwanted clothes to wear. The other members of the Valenti family mocked me, saying I reeked of being a commoner.

In my previous life, after I married Dario, everyone blamed me for Arianna's death.

"If Arianna had married Dario instead, none of this would've happened!" Madre had cried out in front of all the guests at Arianna's funeral.

In the end, when I was dying of illness, there wasn't a single person by my side.

Dario seemed unaccustomed to my silence.

"Where did you get that ugly dress?" he asked, his gaze falling on the open wardrobe behind me. "It belongs in the trash."

"Are you planning to embarrass Arianna and yourself in front of all the guests with that thing?'

I didn't want to waste another second arguing with him, so I slammed the door shut in his face.

Staring at the closed door, he let out a cold snort before turning and walking away.

Only after Dario had disappeared from sight did Luca finally relax, the tension in his presence easing. He stared at the apple pie in my hand without saying a word, then took my hand."Did he hurt you?" he asked. "Call me the next time you run into him. I'll make sure he disappears for good."I smiled and shook my head, then leaned in to press a soft kiss to the corner of Luca's mouth. "What are you doing here?" I asked. He gently pinched my cheek, then carefully blew on the red marks around my wrist. "I was afraid you might get lost," he finally said. What a liar. He was obviously worried about me. Luca and I walked home hand in hand. When he opened the door, Sofia had already prepared a sumptuous dinner and was waiting for us. This was the home I'd longed for in my previous life but had never had. …After Arianna found out that Dario was divorcing her, she sent me messages filled with curses and insults. "Make Dario and his wife disappear from this city," Luca orde

When Dario came looking for me, I was standing outside a shop buying apple pie. I'd been eating too many sweets lately, and my teeth had started hurting. Luca had forbidden Sofia from making me apple pie, so I'd had no choice but to sneak out and buy one myself. As I walked away with the pie in hand, I saw Dario standing outside the shop. He looked unkempt, with stubble covering his face. His wrinkled suit was stained with marks from who knew where.I frowned and tried to walk around him, but he grabbed my arm. "Vera! I know the whole truth now. I was wrong about you."His grip was so tight that it hurt."I'll divorce Arianna right now," he continued. "I was wrong. I'm sorry! Please forgive me. Can we start over?"I struggled to free myself and shot him a glare. "Excuse me, sir," I said coldly. "I don't know you. Please move.""Vera, I was wrong!" Dario cried. "I'm sorry. I'll give you anything you want. Just divorce Luca and come back to me—"Before he could finish, some

  • Married Off to the Dying Don   Chapter 11

A week after Luca and I got married, Dario and Arianna were already on the verge of divorce. The two families had held their weddings on the same day, but the wedding Arianna had been looking forward to—the one she'd hoped would make her famous throughout high society—became a laughingstock almost as soon as it began. On the day of the wedding, the Bellini family's Don officially announced his retirement, handing full control of the family over to his son, Luca. The news sent every reporter rushing to my wedding. Arianna was so furious that she overturned the wedding cake right there and then. The departing reporters happened to capture the scene on camera, and news of how my family had brought me back to fulfill a marriage arrangement quickly spread. My parents and Arianna became the subject of ridicule throughout high society. On their first night as newlyweds, Arianna and Dario got into a heated argument. "Why didn't you have someone keep those reporters away? Why was

That evening, Sofia prepared a feast, along with the apple pie I loved. I sat at the dining table, unsure where to begin. When I first returned to the Valenti family, I didn't know proper table manners. I was scolded at every meal until, eventually, Papa accused me of ruining the atmosphere at the family table and made me eat with the maids instead. Not long after that, Madre made me lose weight. Little by little, I became accustomed to eating only a few bites before returning to my room. When Sofia brought the final dish to the table and saw that I still hadn't touched anything, she looked uneasy."What's wrong, cara mia? Do you not like the food?"I smiled and shook my head. "There's just too much. I can't finish it all.""Don Bellini said you're too thin, so he told me to prepare more food for you," Sofia explained. Ever since I moved in, she had been researching new recipes for me every day. Before bed, she even brought me a glass of milk at just the right temperature.

Madre had said that Luca's family was unimaginably wealthy, and she hadn't been exaggerating. An entire wedding boutique in the heart of the city was one of the Bellini family's most insignificant businesses. "Don Bellini, the wedding dresses are ready," the designer said.I stared at the five racks filled with wedding gowns, my eyes widening in disbelief.A smile crossed Luca's face as he gestured for me to step forward with a gentlemanly flourish. "Signorina Valenti, this first rack holds ten wedding gowns based on the previous designs."This rack contains limited-edition gowns that Don Bellini had us source from all over the world. Each one is completely one of a kind."I spent a long time choosing before finally settling on one. Luca nodded and turned to the designer. "Then we'll take this one. Have the others made to her measurements and delivered to the house."My heart fluttered a little."I'd like to try it on," I said, turning to him. I stepped into the fitting

Luca was swamped with work until late into the night. It was my first time sleeping on a bed this soft, yet I tossed and turned, unable to fall asleep. Just then, I heard footsteps coming up the stairs. I hesitated, wondering whether I should go out and wish Luca good night when I heard the door next to mine close. Shaking my head, I buried myself deeper into the pillows and closed my eyes.…The next morning, I woke up and stepped out of my room to find Luca dressed in casual clothes. He looked completely different from the sharply dressed man I'd seen the day before. His golden hair fell loosely over his forehead, softening his otherwise sharp features. "Buongiorno," he said with a small nod. Downstairs, Sofia smiled and greeted us. "Breakfast is ready. Come down!"I sat at the table, where Sofia handed me a glass of warm milk. Luca placed an egg on my plate. I glanced at him, but he simply picked up his coffee and took a sip. "This afternoon, we're going to try on
