Hours of silence flooded Remi's room; she could not believe what was about to happen to her.
"Where is she?" her father said coldly. "I don't know; maybe she should be in her room," her mother responded, coughing afterwards. The silence in her room was so much that she could hear a needle sound, and yes, she did hear all her parents said. A badge into the room; the door was opened ajar. The sound brought her back from her thoughts. "He is coming this evening, and you are going with him," her father said authoritatively. With so much shock in her eyes, she said, "Daddy, why are you doing this to me? I thought I was your best daughter, your only star. What has changed? What is happening?" She moved toward him with tears rolling down her eyes in an attempt to touch him. Her father felt the pain in her voice, but that was the only thing he could do. "As I said, my words are final, and you will do as I say," he answered her in words, looking away and turning to the door. "Wait! I have something to tell you. I am not getting married to any man overnight," she sniffed with so much courage, moving back to her room. The house became very hot inside; though it was cold outside, the laughter, smiles and energy the Bolajis had disappeared in a twinkle of an eye. It was late as Remi wondered about it in her cemented duplex building. She was losing her mind; she moved to the sitting room and then to her room while her parents were upstairs discussing silently. "Should I run? Where will I run to? I made a few friends cause I had everything a friend could give, and now things have turned around. How am I supposed to survive now? I have to think of a plan before midnight," she finalized it. She walked to her room when she heard noises. This made her tiptoe, but she was still caught by a voice. "Remi, what is wrong with you?" she heard it behind her back. She wondered why the voice seemed calm. If she could remember, she was the one being forced to get married overnight and should not be the insane one. She turned, and it was her mother. "Mummy," she said. "Why me?" Her mother signalled that she should be quiet as she placed one of her fingers on her lips. She dragged her to her room; on her bed, they both sat. "My heartbeat," her mum ended the drama and spoke softly. She interrupted her and said, "If you are not in support of this, why don't you stop your husband? Why don't you remind him it is still his only daughter he always fought for and sweated to protect? What has blinded him so fast that he forgot all the sweat, memories, and bond we shared? Mummy, why?" "It is okay, Remi," she consoled her. "Your father still loves you up till now," she added. In deep disappointment, Remi rose from the bed and faced her mum with tears running down her eyes. "Mummy," she called. "Can you remember when you both sweated to protect me? The story of how I came after the death of your first son, how my father got a new contract that changed and raised the family after my birth. The way I was pampered, the don't touch anything scheme you subscribed me to and after all, I made sure I never disappointed you and my brothers. I was in my best manners, obedient to all and very respectful. You and my father promised me a dream, so I could be successful, go to school and become the great star I wanted to be. But now you want to throw me into the hands of a man I do not even know overnight. I have no decision, no choice, not a day to think and accept." "Enough, enough," her mother thundered. Remi, in shock, moved backwards, still trying to maintain her balance. Her mother said, "Your father loves you, so do I, but this is what it is. You are getting married tonight for your brother's visa approval. You know this family needs money, and this is the..." "Mummy," she said in shock, holding her chest like she was going to have a heart attack. "I thought I came to comfort this family, as I am called. Why am I turning out to be the sacrifice? There are other ways to get that done, but why do you all choose my denial of everything..." "Mummy," she said calmly while breathing gently. "Leave my room. Closing my eyes this time, I just have two counts, and you are gone." Her mother never wanted any further scene; she left the room and headed upstairs to wait for her son-in-law at midnight. Remi fell on her bed, looking up at the ceiling; she felt nothing around her but betrayal and imagined how she got into this big mess. She thought of how her brother treated her in school. Her brothers would beat her for telling her dad the truth about what they did, which always got them punished. She recalled how her brothers were so jealous of how smart she was that they would even reduce her snack portion and sometimes threaten to lock her up if she reported. She recalled how her dad had always been her saviour, teaching her brothers a lesson every single time. "Why the twist in my life," she said faintly. "What will I be doing in marriage? I just got out of high school; what am I going to do there? Do my parents have something they are not telling me?" She wondered, still very confused. She moved her body on the bed; she felt something that didn't feel like her bedding. She woke up to check; it was a paper. She pulled it out from her bedding; it was a little envelope. "What is inside?" she said aloud. .He raised his head and smiled effortlessly. "This will be the last time I will be so close to you, patient and kind. I had to bring all these up so this contract marriage will work out well," he clarified, still looking at her. "Sonny, please go straight to the point. Why are you beating around the bush?" Remi said with annoyance. "Can you keep quiet? Why are you like this?" He got triggered and stood up from his chair. He backed away and said, with his hand on his head, "I know how much of a mess this is. I am trying to figure things out, and then you are here being so unreasonable." "Oh, you call it unreasonable? Let us see how you will get this marriage done tonight with this unreasonable person." She stood up and was about to leave. She felt a strong grip on her hand. She turned. "Where are you going?" Sonny said, his eyes red. He was already angry. "Please, leave me. I am going for the fitting. After that, we will both meet at the wedding, and then everything is over," Re
"That is nothing to worry about, dear. He is very much fine," Funke said quickly."But why did you not tell me last night?" Remi asked."I never wanted to spoil your day with your man." Funke raised her eyebrow at Sonny, who was not even following the conversation. She moved to Remi, patted her back gently and said, "I have to rush to do one or two things in the market. My clothes are ready. I planned so much for this day that I started making dresses already.""Sonny, catch you. I will be right back," she added."Eh?" Sonny said, raising his voice after hearing his name. He was startled."Okay," he responded as he watched his mother-in-law walk out of the house. The house fell into deep silence.Sonny worked tirelessly at his desk, his fingers flying over the keyboard. Remi was in her room, writing in her diary and looking through her books. She flipped through her previous goals and expectations. At this point, she realized that a lot was about to change.Whether it was negative or
How would I tell her this? I cannot be left out of my father's share. This young girl is not attractive to me, how can I keep on with this? I have to come up with something she will believe so we can go ahead with the contract marriage.Sonny stared at the message on his screen until his eyes went wild."I just saw a task that got me overwhelmed. The venue will be known after the card drops today," he muttered to himself.Remi was done eating. She carried her plates to the kitchen. Her appetite was gone. The feedback she just got did not sit well with her. She had a feeling something was fishy.Sonny was confused."How will I get to do this?" he said under his breath. He called his brother immediately."Mr. Man, my brother, my brother, how are you doing?" Sonny said."I'm doing fine," Smith replied. "How is your sugarplum?"Smith teased him from the other end."Man, please, can we talk? Stop this! What is the meaning of this?" Sonny said, trying not to smile."Hey, bro, I hope you sle
Oh God, I'm so pressed," Remi whispered. She hurried into the bathroom and locked the door. She needed a minute to herself. The whole house felt tense since morning. She had just finished easing herself and was adjusting her clothes when she heard some sound. She was not scared because it was her bathroom and no else's.The movement she made while dressing her bed gave her body an alert which was what made her pressed it was nature and not her fault. The bathtub curtain pulled back.Sonny stepped out, a white towel wrapped low around his waist. Water dripped from his hair down to his broad shoulders and his well-built chest.Remi's eyes widened."Jesus! My eyes!"She turned away instantly, covering her face with both hands."Damn it!" Sonny cursed, just as shocked. He rushed out of the bathroom covering his chest with his hand and banging the door behind him."Stay there! Let me change!" he shouted from her bedroom to her in the toilet "You keep messing up my day!"Remi flushed the to
"Do not cry, my angel, please. I don't mean to hurt you."He moved closer to her, trying to calm her down."Don't you dare come close to me!" she snapped, her voice filled with anger. "I am very angry with you. It's just been a few hours and you are already acting so rude. You want to beat me up, right?"Sonny remembered what her mother had told him, to take it easy with her. He became restless, wondering what his next move should be."Okay, fine. I am sorry," he said. "It is a contract marriage. Let us just make it work, then we will go our separate ways.""I will not forgive you for this," she replied coldly. "You said it yourself. This is a contract marriage. That is all. No more talk."She checked the time. "It's just four hours left before the normal house chores begin. You have been awake. You should take a nap or something."She ignored him, moved close to her bed, picked up a mat and handed it over to him."This is enough for you. You can manage."He stood still, watching her
Remi moved slowly into her room. The introduction was over. The wedding date was near. Dinner was done. Drinks were cleared. Now was the time to act like a couple who actually wanted marriage. She opened her door and walked straight to the mirror. Downstairs, Funke smiled at her future son-in-law. "Mr. Sonny, my son," Funke said softly. "I know you must be tired. Let me show you to your wife's room." Sonny looked exhausted. One hand rested on his head as he relaxed on the sofa. He turned to his soon-to-be mother-in-law and forced a smile. Funke was not satisfied with that smile. "Son, come on," she said, pulling him up from the sofa. "Let me take you there." "Okay, I'm here. I will follow right after. Just direct me. I will find my way when I am ready," Sonny replied. "Directing you is not enough. Come and see it yourself," Funke insisted. As if she had won the argument, Sonny stood up sluggishly and followed her to the corridor where Remi's room was. He stopp
