VALENTINA

Marco shook his head after Elia left the room, a crooked smirk tugging at his lips. “Adrian keeps you on a short leash.”

I stiffened. I couldn’t discuss my marriage with him. Not with anyone, really. It would only prove Adrian right when he said trust was something I didn’t yet deserve.

“How’s Mom doing in her new role as the rising star of our circles?” I asked, forcing a light tone.

He snorted, but at least he took the bait. “She’s panicking. She thinks taking in Kiara will destroy

ADRIAN The tires screamed against wet asphalt as I took the last corner too fast. It had started raining, and the headlights cut through it like knives, but everything beyond the windshield was a blur. My pulse hammered in my throat, in my temples, in my goddamn fingertips clutching the steering wheel. Rico’s last words still rang in my ears, louder than the engine. ‘I simply took what belongs to me.’ Stefan. My son. Taken. I slammed the brakes in front of the house. The car hadn’t even fully stopped when the front door flew open and Valentina came running barefoot across the gravel, coatless, hair plastered to her face by the rain. She looked like a ghost in the floodlights— pale, wild-eyed, and already breaking. “Adrian!” The scream tore out of her the second she reached me. She collided with my chest so hard I had to brace my legs to keep from falling backward. Her hands clawed at my jacket, my shirt, anything she could grab. “Tell me I heard wrong. Tell me you didn’t sa

  • Married To Danger   CHAPTER 104

ADRIAN I closed the door on Valentina’s terrified face before facing Rico, who was still holding his gun. Despite the almost irresistible urge to pull my own, I didn’t. I still had to show respect to Rico and he appreciated me more than most of his other Underbosses. That didn’t mean he wouldn’t kill me. There wasn’t a man or woman that Rico wasn’t capable of killing, except for his wife and daughters— maybe. “Did you kill Serena?” He suddenly asked. “No. I didn’t even consider it,” I said. “She killed herself, like I told you. She missed him too much.” The pain of the past didn’t come this time. Serena was the past. Valentina was my present and future. She’d shown me what it meant to love a woman as fiercely as I loved my children. Rico sheathed his gun. “I expect the truth from my men.” I swallowed, knowing that we were starting to breach dangerous territory. “I didn’t want anyone to find out that Serena had cheated. Some people did, of course, and their reaction was bad enou

VALENTINA I smiled, trying to mask my nerves. “Good evening, Rico. I’m sorry to disturb you. Can I have a word with you?” Rico glanced behind me at Elia and the look in his eyes sent a chill down my back. “I didn’t expect you, Valentina.” He said as his wary gaze settled on me. We were family, but that didn’t mean we were close or that Rico trusted me the slightest bit. He didn’t trust anyone. After a moment, he nodded and opened the door for me. “Come in.” I walked past him. “Elia will wait outside. What we have to discuss is private.” Rico raised an eyebrow but didn’t comment as he closed the door. According to the rules in our world, this was inappropriate. A married woman wasn’t supposed to be alone with another man, but I’d never bothered with these rules and wasn’t going to start now. Rico motioned me toward the seating area of his suite. I sank down on the white sofa. He took a seat in an armchair across from me, then returned his gun to the holster around his chest, b

  • Married To Danger   CHAPTER 102

VALENTINA My father’s face became hard like stone. He glared down at his plate and I almost felt guilty because despite all his faults, I loved him. He’d been a better father than many other men in our world. “How can you speak in that tone to your father? Show some respect,” Mom hissed. I took a bite of the beef tenderloin, trying to stay calm. Keeping a level head had become more difficult since pregnancy hormones were in play. “I respect you, but your ambition is going to ruin our lives. I don’t care if this baby becomes Underboss. I want only the best for him, but becoming a leader in our world isn’t part of it.” “You were always a dreamer, Valentina. It’s what I love about you,” Dad said, breaking through my rising anger until his next words. “But as a man, I can’t afford irrational daydreams. I know the realities of our life. And the truth is that all that matters is a position of power. I won’t have the son of a cheating whore as an Underboss. Our grandson will rule over

  • Married To Danger   CHAPTER 101

VALENTINA I didn’t breathe until the hallway door swung shut behind me. My father. How could Ernesto have told my father of all people? “He might as well have printed flyers and thrown them on the streets,” I muttered under my breath, anger pushing heat up my throat. “Why would he tell anyone?” I marched down the corridor so fast I nearly bumped into Gemma. She grabbed my arm before I could fall. “Whoa! hey, hey,” she said, eyes wide. “What happened? You look like you’ve just seen a ghost.” “Nothing,” I instantly lied, forcing my expression into something neutral. My heart was hammering, my palms felt slick. “I just remembered… I’m late. For something. I have to go.” Gemma frowned. “Val—” “I’m fine,” I said too quickly. “Really.” She didn’t look convinced, but she stepped aside. I gave her a tight smile and hurried toward the elevators. Elia was already there, standing alert like always, eyes scanning the corridor. When he saw me coming at him like a storm, he straightened

  • Married To Danger   CHAPTER 100

VALENTINA By the time I reached the fourth month of my pregnancy, I was starting to feel self conscious. The baby, our “the little bean” as we were calling him until he was safely in our arms, had taken up permanent residence on my bladder and seemed to think my ribs were a drum kit. I knew it was still too early to be feeling all of this, so it was probably just my anxiety that was making it all worse. I was exhausted, emotional, and secretly terrified that every twinge I felt meant something was wrong. Then the call came in the middle of the night. Adrian’s dad, Ernesto, had collapsed at the dinner table. He’d had another heart attack, and this one worse. The doctors were careful with their words, but their eyes said everything: Prepare yourselves. Two days later, Ernesto asked to see me alone and I was immediately filled with dread. Adrian was in California on business he couldn’t postpone. I could have waited. I should have waited. Instead I kissed the kids goodbye, told S

ADRIANShe let out a shaky breath. “We’ll be married in three months.”Her voice trembled, and the words hung in the air between us.I nodded. “Yes, once you turn twenty one.”Her brows pulled together. “Do you really think it makes a difference? A few more months won’t suddenly turn me into a wife

ADRIAN“Hey, I got this for you,” Damien said, handing me a flask.I tugged my tie into place, feeling the knot tighten against my throat like a noose, before accepting the flask he offered. “I won’t be drinking hard liquor today.”His mouth curled into a smirk. “It’s not for drinking. VALENTINA “Is Daddy a bad man?”I nearly fell off the ladder. For a heartbeat, I forgot how to breathe. In the three weeks since his birthday, Stefan had barely spoken. He had only made small, hesitant words here and there, and now, on the morning before Christmas Eve, this was what came out of h

ADRIANI hadn’t had a family dinner at the beach house in a really long time. I could tell how immensely pleased Gemma was over this new development. She’d been trying to convince me to do one for months.Emiliano joined me for a quick Negroni before dinner, and I caught him looking at Valentina i
