Levi's POV

The hospital always smelled like bleach and sadness.

I walked through the hallway so many times. I drank so many bad coffees from the machines while I walked back and forth. But that smell always stuck with me. It told me that I was still here. Still waiting. Waiting for her.

Nova.

I just came back from the little prayer room. My hands were still shaking from trying to pray. I begged God and anyone else who might listen to bring her back to me. I used to make jokes about prayer in work meetings. Not anymore.

I could not handle a world without her. I was not strong enough.

The elevator doors opened and the doctor walked up to me. The same one I talked to before. But his face looked different now. Less worried. Maybe even hopeful.

"Mr Adam," he said. He had a tablet pressed against his chest. "Nova's brain is showing better signs now. Small waves of movement. Much better than yesterday."

My breath ceased for a while. Something cracked open in my chest and hope spilt out.
