Rowland’s POV.

“You should have told me.” I rested on the railings outside the station.

The sun had gone down. The women had been sent back home while the men stayed back.

Mark shook his head. “I couldn't, Rowland. Mother begged me. She pleaded with me not to tell you anything.”

My heart twisted in my chest. “Did you… did you know she had my baby?”

Mark straightened. “No! None of us knew. We would have never hidden that from you. I would never have.”

I exhaled... taking everyth

Rowland’s POVI was reckless; I couldn’t go home or drive to work either. And I had no idea where Selene was. The call from Sophie had shaken me more than I realized. I sent the details to the inspector. “Oh, Tom," I muttered through gritted teeth. “Pray I don’t catch you before the police do.” I hit the accelerator and surged forward. I had been on the road for hours, driving aimlessly. My heart skipped at every brown-haired lady who glanced at me. I left Mark at home. Lord, I am elated he’s here. I needed all the support I could get. My car pulled up in front of Lisa’s. I don’t know why I was back here. I just couldn’t shake off the feeling; something’s up with her. Time was running out. I sat inside for a few minutes, trying to recollect my thoughts. Had Selene mentioned something earlier?Had there been something I’d missed?I gripped my hair in my fingers. “I am sorry, Selene. I shouldn’t have let you stay alone that night.” First, I had lost a daughter I didn’t even ge

Selene’s POV. My head rested on the headrest. My eyelids refused to close. My mind kept spiraling. From Rowland to Sophie, my mother, and Amira. My arms were crossed over my stomach. I looked ahead at nothing. The room was dark, except for a beam of the moon's light ray coming in through the blinds. Tom lay beside me. Snoring lightly. The sound made my ears tingle in annoyance. How could he sleep so peacefully? After everything he has done. How dare he lie beside me tonight? I gazed at him. My pulse raced; anger seeped through my veins. I wonder what would happen if I just used the pillow. He’s stronger than me. He would push me away before I even get the chance to ram it over his face. Lord! Selene, what are you even thinking? I looked down at my fingers; they had curled into a fist so tightly that my knuckles had turned white. Tom had always brought out the very worst in me. I exhaled a shaky breath. Why weren’t they here yet? Tom’s phone vibrated beside him. He still

A cough emanated from behind us. I spun around quickly. Selene’s father stood still. His eyes were weary and tired. “Sorry to interrupt." His gaze turned to me. "Can I have a few words?" Mark looked from me to Richard and then back. “Why not?" “I would be in the car, ro," he said, placing his hands over his belt buckle before walking away. He had stayed in South America for so long; he now looks li

Rowland’s POV. My heart leaped. A gleamer of hope rose up in me. “I will be heading there now.” I snapped before cutting the call. Lisa straightened. “We aren’t done here.” I said, without turning back as I headed for the door. I dashed into the driver's seat and turned on the ignition. Lisa ran down the stairs faster than I have ever seen her move. “Wait!” She heaved out, “I am coming with you.” Before I could protest, she yanked the door open and slid in. "Drive," she muttered. “I don’t have time for this, Lisa." “Then drive, Rowland." I exhaled and hit the accelerator. It took every bit of willpower in me not to speed off the road. ***** The location kept moving farther on the map. Lisa sat quietly beside me. Her hair was tied up in a ponytail. Her eyes were fixed on her fingers splayed in her lab. She might actually have no idea where Tom went. She was quite a strange woman. Hard to read. She’s young. What made her latch so deeply ont

Selene’s POV. I leaned against the window pane. It had been raining for a few hours, and we had been on the road for hours. I had drifted in and out of sleep countless times. My mind drifted back to the house. I hope they found the recording. I knew Rowland would be on his way now; he would find me soon.Could Tom be telling the truth about Sophie? Have I really lost my Sophie? My chest tightened. I pressed my palm against my chest. It all felt unreal. I kept my eyes forward. I didn't want to look at him. He was a completely different person. I would have never imagined. “We are here, honey.” I heard him say. I sat up quickly. My eyes scanned the road. The rain had fizzled down now, but all I could see were bushes. I held my breath. “Where are we?” “Oh, just my little investment for the time being.” He pushed his door open. "We can’t travel immediately."I swallowed. He made his way to my side of the car and pushed open my door. “They would be looking for you now; we mi

Tom’s POV I side-eyed Selene as I drove along the lonely road. Her head rested on the window pane. She sat so still that it looked like she was asleep, but her eyes moved sometimes. She will understand soon why I am doing all these. No one can love her like I do. We are going to be so happy. A car swept past us. Her eyes followed the direction of the sound till it disappeared behind us. I reached for her palm and gave a light squeeze. She remained still. Her other hand rested over her stomach. A smile tugged at the corner of my lips. Our child. I was getting closer to the garage. “Hey, honey," I muttered, gazing at her. “We are going to stop at the garage. We need to change the car.” She gazed at me, finally. An expression I couldn’t quite read. “Why?” “Extra caution, my love.” She looked ahead, her lips parted to speak, but nothing came out. “Don’t worry, everything will be fine soon. I trust you to be on your best behavior.” A lock of h

Selene’s POV. I tossed the scrambled piece of paper into the trash for the thirteenth time. My head was a big mess. I stared at the report I was given to take care of as part of my team contribution to the magazine and I had only two days to turn it in. I placed my head on the desk slowly. I hadn

Rowland’s POV I didn’t go to work today. My mind spiraled. I hated seeing Selene look that way. She looked so fragile, so pale. I walked to my wine cellar and popped open a bottle of champagne. I closed my eyes, savoring the feel of the alcohol going down my throat. How was I going to hel
