Selene’s POV

I had never been more relieved to see Rowland in my entire life.

The tightness in my chest eased when I looked up and he was standing by my window.

I hated it. I hated how comfort came easily with him. Even after all these years.

I glanced at him. He had on a suit like he was coming from somewhere official.

The thick scent of his perfume wrapped around me as I stepped out.

My hands flew to my mouth. “My goodness, was I interrupting something important?”

“N…”

“Oh dear, I really did

Rowland’s POV. “Oh dear, I should have called the police earlier.” I watched the old lady, who stood in front of the abandoned house, with her fingers wrapped around her body. “You really wouldn’t have known, honey.” An elderly man, who I presumed to be her husband, rubbed her shoulder lightly. He turned to the officer. "We need to head in now, Officer, before my wife's blood pressure spikes.” I threw my head back in frustration. That man seems to be ten steps ahead. Mark stood a few feet away on the porch, talking to the inspector. I watched the inspector receive a call and place the phone over his ear. He nodded and slipped the phone into his pocket. It seems there has been a sighting in the east. I straightened, alarmed. “Do you think it’s them, Inspector?" “It has to be.” He mumbled something into the walkie-talkie on his shoulder and headed for his car. "It has to be; the description matches the one from the old lady. A car is parked lazily on the r

Rowland’s POV. Mark sat across from me in my little office. I tilted the glass of thick liquor over my lips. I needed to calm my nerves. “I was thinking with that amount of money, we should have found Selene by now.” Mark sighed. "You have to be calm, brother…trust the police are doing their work.” “There is no time… mark. Selene and my child could be anywhere right now; lord knows how they are faring." Mark leaned forward. “I honestly think…” My phone rang. Mark and I both exchanged glances. It was past midnight. Who could be calling at this hour? I reached for the phone so quickly that I nearly knocked over my glass.“Hello?”“Mr. Rowland?”I straightened immediately.“Yes.”“This is the inspector."My heart lurched.“What happened?”“We have a possible lead on Mrs. Selene.”I was already on my feet.“Where?”“There was a report from a local resident. An abandoned property was recently spotted with signs of activity around it. We sent someone to check the area, and they fou

Selene’s POV. Tom was gone for hours. I had gone round, trying every single lock in the house. Rummaged through the wardrobes for something. Anything that could help, and now, I was tired. Left for me, I wouldn’t dare eat anything Tom left for me. For all I knew he could have put something in it. But I had to consider the baby. All that running around the house had made me weak and tired. My stomach grumbled…I placed a hand over it. “I know,” I whispered. “I’m hungry too.”I pushed myself to my feet and walked to the kitchen. An owl hooted somewhere in the woods. I pulled up the refrigerator and bent over. It was completely stocked. Different containers of refrigerated food arranged neatly in a row. My eyes lingered on them. I picked up one of the containers and read the label. Chicken and rice. “Fine.” I whispered, looking around the empty room. I placed it inside the microwave and pressed the button.I stood there with my arms folded, watching the food turn slowly beh

Selene’s POVWe had been indoors all day. Tom had moved from one hushed conversation to the next. Occasionally pacing around the living room. My heart raced; it all felt unreal. My eyes followed his every move. His shoulders tensed. He glanced through the window each minute. The storm had quieted now. “Stay here," he whispered. “Don’t leave the house no matter what, or I would be forced to lock you in.” I said nothing. “Did you hear me?” I nodded. He got out of the house, and in the next few seconds, the sound of a failing engine emanated from outside.I pushed the blinds an inch and peeked my face through. Tom was bent over the bonnet, with his sleeves rolled up to his elbows. I needed to think; a small path led away from the house. That was probably where he had come from. I tried to recall the path and everything I had seen in the way. I should remember when I am out, I would wait till he’s gone. I stood quietly, watching him work. Suddenly, footsteps shuffled through

Rowland’s POV I was reckless; I couldn’t go home or drive to work either. And I had no idea where Selene was. The call from Sophie had shaken me more than I realized. I sent the details to the inspector. “Oh, Tom," I muttered through gritted teeth. “Pray I don’t catch you before the police do.” I hit the accelerator and surged forward. I had been on the road for hours, driving aimlessly. My heart skipped at every brown-haired lady who glanced at me. I left Mark at home. Lord, I am elated he’s here. I needed all the support I could get. My car pulled up in front of Lisa’s. I don’t know why I was back here. I just couldn’t shake off the feeling; something’s up with her. Time was running out. I sat inside for a few minutes, trying to recollect my thoughts. Had Selene mentioned something earlier? Had there been something I’d missed? I gripped my hair in my fingers. “I am sorry, Selene. I shouldn’t have let you stay alone that night.” First, I had lost a

Selene’s POV. My head rested on the headrest. My eyelids refused to close. My mind kept spiraling. From Rowland to Sophie, my mother, and Amira. My arms were crossed over my stomach. I looked ahead at nothing. The room was dark, except for a beam of the moon's light ray coming in through the blinds. Tom lay beside me. Snoring lightly. The sound made my ears tingle in annoyance. How could he sleep so peacefully? After everything he has done. How dare he lie beside me tonight? I gazed at him. My pulse raced; anger seeped through my veins. I wonder what would happen if I just used the pillow. He’s stronger than me. He would push me away before I even get the chance to ram it over his face. Lord! Selene, what are you even thinking? I looked down at my fingers; they had curled into a fist so tightly that my knuckles had turned white. Tom had always brought out the very worst in me. I exhaled a shaky breath. Why weren’t they here yet? Tom’s phone vibrated beside him. He still

Selene’s POV.The morning passed by too fast. Amira sat at the back seat, nibbling at the candy I had given her. I didn’t want the school bus taking her today.I had woken up with a sudden realization that Tom was going to do anything to get us back, and I couldn’t let him use Amira as leverage. We

A blonde woman sat on Tom’s lap, her arm draped over his shoulder as she sat crosleged over his Lap, their faces close enough to touch. My chest tightened, my legs felt like jelly, and for a second I couldn’t breathe. Tom stood up abruptly, pushing her gently aside. My voice quivered. “What's
