FIFTY

Daniel and Jane stood in the elevator, hand in hand with silence hanging in the air. But the touch of her hand spoke volumes, it represented the unspoken trust that Jane had in him and that alone was more than enough for Daniel.

He gave her hand a light squeeze and she tore her eyes away from the elevator door to look at him. Daniel returned her gaze. A few strands of her hazel locks hung over her right cheek, near her eye and instinctively Daniel reached out and brushed it away and she smiled at him. But the smile that graced her face faded the moment they reached the lobby and the elevator door slid open.

“JANE!”

Daniel cringed at the high pitched scream of Jane’s stepmother. The pompous woman bulldozed her way through the queue of people in front of the elevator and jumped into the rectangular metal box. The elevator groaned under her weight and for a moment, Daniel had a crazed vision of the pulley system and cables failing and the elevator
