April's pov.

If there was anything I hated more than my shit head boss, it was the excruciating sound of moans that I was forced to listen to while sitting outside his office.

The only thing Rowan knew how to do was make my life miserable with his irrelevant tasks and torturous long hours at work. However, I had no choice because being his secretary paid just enough to sustain my mom and I.

Plus, it was a good distraction from the fact that my boyfriend of four years had just gotten married a week ago and I was completely oblivious to the fact that I was the side chick.

I didn't want to talk about it.

After what seemed like forever, the blonde girl who had been moaning so loudly finally stepped out of his office, her hair disheveled and her make-up smeared all over her face. She flashed me a grin, barely able to walk, and I rolled my eyes at her.

“He wants you in there to clean up..” she paused to giggle. “Things got kinda messy.”

My eyes followed her as she left, and then I got up, adjusted my dress for God-knows-what reason and made my way through the thick aluminium doors.

He was sitting in his favorite position when I walked in, staring out the glass windows at the bustling city, with his white shirt unbuttoned and a glass of whiskey in his hand. He looked anything but pleasant, and I had noticed how upset he had been for the past few days.

It all started when his father visited the office. I overheard them yelling at each other, but I didn't quite figure out what the argument had been about.

“Good evening sir.” I greeted, standing before his desk and scrunching my nose at the scent of sweat and semen that wafted through the air. Papers were scattered everywhere, chairs thrown in different directions.

“Do your fucking job.” He ordered, cold and brutal as always.

A deep frown formed on my face instantly. “Sir, it's not my job to clean up after you. We have cleaners for that.”

Rowan didn't look at me, he poured the rest of the whiskey into his mouth and smashed the glass on the white, marble floor, making me flinch in shock.

“If I repeat myself, then don't bother resuming on Monday.”

I hated this so much. He always threatened to fire me whenever I stood up to him. He knew how much I needed this job, he knew that my mother's life depended on the money he paid me, and he was taking advantage of it. What could I do? Absolutely nothing with a boss like him who could tear down my world in a single day.

“I'm sorry, sir.” I muttered, dragging my feet along as I walked towards one of the chairs, my chest tightening in pain and rage.

I watched him grab the bottle of whiskey and empty almost half of it into his mouth as I cleaned. Then, a desperate groan escaped his throat, confirming that something was indeed bothering him. I didn't care, he deserved all the pain he was getting.

Picking up some of the scattered documents, I went around his table to place them on the desk, and for a short moment, I was closer to him than I wanted, and his minty scent mixed with his alcohol breath filled my nose, making my heart stop for only a second.

Then, I felt his eyes on me, lingering longer than they should have, just out of pure rage, at least that was what I thought. I moved quickly, my eyes meeting the clock.

“I've taken care of everything, and it's five already. I think I'll be on my way.” I cleared my throat, wiping my sweaty hands on my pencil skirt before proceeding to the door.

“You will leave when I am ready to go.” His order came, sharp, chilling and making my chest twist in fury.

He was going to make me stay in the office for no reason again! He just loved to do it, he hated me that much.

“Yes sir.” My jaw ticked, and I left the office.

Outside, I wanted to scream, but that would be of no use, it might even cost me my job. I sank into my chair, letting out a loud sigh before grabbing my phone to inform my mother that I would be home late again.

Minutes turned into hours, and sitting suddenly felt like a chore. I paced the length of the office, staring out the windows and wishing I was out there instead of in this quiet office.

I found a leftover bottle of brandy on one of the shelves, the same one I was secretly sipping on the day I found out that Mark, my ex, was getting married. Thinking about it again made my chest ache, so I grabbed the Brandy to try and numb the pain.

I poured myself a glass, which soon turned into two glasses. By the third glass, I became tipsy and decided to stop if I wanted to make it home in one piece. The room spun, but my eyes managed to land on the wall clock and saw that it was already 9pm.

My sick mother was all alone, and that asshole boss of mine is keeping me here! I couldn't take it anymore, I stumbled into his office, eyes barely staying open, only to see him passed out on his desk and surrounded by three bottles of whiskey.

“Oh my goodness, sir!” I yelled out, my heart dipping. I ran over, grabbed his shoulders and tried to pull him to an upright position. He was heavier than I had expected.

“What have you done to yourself?” I groaned. “Security!” I bellowed, my voice bouncing off the walls of the office. I staggered back, struggling to hold him up, and then a grunt escaped his throat.

“Sir, are you okay?” I questioned, relieved that he didn't die on my watch. What could have gotten him so distraught?

“Miss O’Reilly.” He called, batting his lashes at me, his voice hoarse in a way that made my stomach tighten. I hated that feeling.

“We have to get you home.”

The veins in my neck and arms almost popped as I pulled him up to his feet, sweat trickling down my face. We were barely able to stand, and I couldn't hold him up for long because my ankle shifted and we both fell back.

A scream tore from my lips when my back hit the cold floor. He fell, but not on me, he managed to keep himself from crushing me by steadying his arms on the floor. His face was directly above mine, and I hated that my eyes lingered on him for so long.

I swallowed when he brought his face closer, and as if that wasn't enough, he pressed his lips on mine… slowly. My eyes widened, my heart racing so fast that I thought it was going to burst out of my chest.

I shouldn't have, but I didn't stop it either, and before I knew it, I was already kissing him back.
