Ryan expected me to walk into that courtroom alone.

He expected the woman who had spent four years smoothing over his bad moods, defending him to her family, and swallowing every hurt because she loved him.

He was about to meet someone else.

I stepped out of Damian’s car and adjusted the sleeve of my cream blazer. My hands were cold, but I refused to let them shake.

Damian came around the car. For one second, I looked at him. He didn’t ask if I was ready.

He simply held out his hand. I stared at it. Then I took it. His fingers closed around mine, firm and warm. The gesture shouldn’t have meant so much.

It did. Inside the courthouse, Ryan was waiting with his lawyer. Sophia stood beside him.

The moment Ryan looked up and saw me, his expression changed. Then he saw Damian.

The color drained from his face. I almost smiled.

Almost. Ryan’s eyes moved between us, lingering on Damian’s hand around mine.

What the hell is he doing here? His voice carried across the corridor. Damian didn’t even look at him.

Instead, he leaned slightly toward me. You don’t have to speak to him. I nodded. Ryan took a step toward us. Eva. I stopped.

For the first time since everything fell apart, I looked directly at my husband without feeling the desperate need to ask why. Why Sophia?

Why me? Why wasn’t I enough? There was nothing left to ask. You look different,” he said. I’m not.

His eyes narrowed. You were crying yesterday.”

I was. And now? I held his stare. Now I’m done.

Something flickered across his face.

I saw it. He hadn’t expected that.

For four years, Ryan had known exactly how to make me fold. A disappointed look. A cold shoulder. A few carefully chosen words.

He knew how much I hated confrontation.

He knew I would rather hurt quietly than fight loudly.

But that woman hadn’t survived yesterday.

She had stayed in the hotel bathroom until her eyes were swollen and her chest hurt from crying.

She had stared at a divorce agreement until the words blurred. She had cried herself empty.

There was nothing left for Ryan to break.

His gaze shifted to Damian. This is between my wife and me. Damian finally looked at him.

“Then you should have treated her like your wife.”

Silence. Ryan’s jaw tightened. Sophia touched his arm. Ryan, we should go inside. He shook her off.

His eyes stayed on Damian.

You don’t know what happened between us.”

No. Damian’s voice was quiet. But I know what happened after. Ryan went pale again.

I felt Damian’s thumb move once across the back of my hand. A tiny gesture. Steadying me. The doors opened.

Mrs. Knight? I turned toward the clerk. Yes.”

“Your hearing is ready to begin. I took one breath.

Then another. Ryan was watching me.

Waiting for me to crumble.

I walked past him without saying a word.

For the first time in four years, I didn’t care whether Ryan approved of the woman I’d become.

I was finally becoming someone he couldn’t control.

The courtroom was colder than I expected.

I sat beside Damian while Ryan took his place across the room.

His lawyer began speaking almost immediately.

The accusation sounded even uglier when spoken aloud.

Fraud. Unauthorized transfer. Twelve million dollars. My name attached to every word.

I kept my eyes forward. Inside, I was falling apart.

I could feel Damian beside me, completely still.

When Ryan’s lawyer finished, the judge looked directly at me.

“Mrs. Knight, do you deny authorizing this transfer?”

I do. My voice didn’t shake. Ryan looked at me.

I saw surprise flash across his face. He had expected tears. Instead, I sat straight in my chair.

The judge studied the documents.

“Your signature appears on the authorization.”

“I didn’t sign it. Ryan shifted in his seat. I looked at him. You know I didn’t. His face hardened.

“Eva Don’t. The word came out sharper than I intended. But I didn’t take it back.

Ryan stared at me like he was seeing a stranger.

Maybe he was.

The judge asked Damian’s attorney to respond.

He stood slowly.

“Your Honor, we have reason to believe the transaction was deliberately structured to implicate Mrs. Knight.”

Ryan’s lawyer objected. The judge allowed him to continue.

A series of documents appeared on the screen.

Bank records. Login histories. Transaction timestamps.

I watched Damian’s attorney move through them one by one.

Then he stopped.

“There is one problem with the plaintiff’s claim.”

Ryan’s lawyer frowned. What problem?”

“The transfer was authorized from a device located inside Mr. Knight’s private office.”

The courtroom went silent. Ryan’s face changed.

I turned toward him. He wasn’t looking at me anymore. He was looking at Damian.

And Damian was already watching him. The judge leaned forward.

“Do you have evidence identifying who accessed the account?”

Not yet, Your Honor. Ryan exhaled. I almost relaxed.

Then Damian’s attorney placed another document on the table.

“But we have requested the complete access records. The judge looked at it. From the bank?”

Yes.And when will those records be available?”

Within twenty-four hours. Ryan suddenly stood.

“Your Honor, there’s no reason to delay this matter. The judge’s eyes narrowed. Sit down, Mr. Knight.”

Ryan obeyed. But I could see the fear now.

Not anger. Not arrogance. Fear. He knew something was coming. And so did I. The judge looked at both legal teams. Until the records are reviewed, no further transfer of the disputed assets will occur.”

My heart gave a hard beat. Ryan’s lawyer immediately protested. The judge raised a hand.

That is my order. The gavel came down. The hearing was over. I turned toward Damian. He wasn’t smiling. He was staring at Ryan. Ryan stood slowly. His eyes met mine.

For a moment, neither of us moved.

Then he said something so quietly that only I could hear it.

“You have no idea what you’ve just started.”

I felt fear rise in my chest. But I didn’t look away. Neither do you. Ryan’s expression changed.

And for the first time, he looked afraid of me.

Sophia stood in the bedroom doorway, and the sight of her wearing nothing but the silk robe I had once bought for myself made something inside me twist, not with jealousy, but with the quiet disgust of seeing the final proof of how completely Ryan had desecrated everything we had built together. Her hair was loose around her shoulders, her face carefully made, as though she had taken the time to look perfect before coming downstairs. But the confidence disappeared the moment her eyes landed on Damian. She stared at him for several seconds, and I watched the realization settle over her face. She had expected to find me alone, broken enough to argue with her, perhaps desperate enough to demand that Ryan choose between us. Instead, she had walked into a room filled with packed boxes, a husband who could no longer control me, and the one man she had probably never imagined would stand beside me.I didn’t give her a reaction. I turned back to the wardrobe and reached for another stack of c

The first flash hit the windshield before Damian had even turned off the engine, and the second one came so quickly that I instinctively turned toward the window. There were photographers everywhere. They crowded the pavement outside the house, cameras raised, waiting for exactly what I had been trying to avoid. My stomach tightened as I looked toward the front door, wondering how they had gotten there so quickly. Then the door flew open, and Ryan came striding outside as though he had been waiting for the sound of Damian’s car. He stopped at the top of the steps, looked straight at the cameras, and gave them the wounded expression of a man who had just been betrayed in front of the whole world. There he is, one of the photographers shouted. Is that Damian Knight?Ryan didn’t hesitate. He pointed toward our car, his voice carrying across the driveway. Yes. Look at him. Look at the man who destroyed my home. Look at the man who took my lovely wife away from me.I felt the blood rise to

The photograph stayed on my screen. I couldn’t look away.It showed me standing outside a restaurant, my face turned slightly toward the camera. Damian was beside me. The date underneath it was three weeks before Ryan filed for divorce. Three weeks. My stomach twisted. The headline above it was worse.Billionaire’s Wife Secretly Involved With His Cousin Before DivorceI stared at the words until they blurred. No. Damian moved beside me. Let me see. I handed him the phone. His eyes moved across the article.I watched his face change. Not panic. Not fear. Something colder. This was taken three weeks ago,” I whispered. I know.” I wasn’t with you three weeks ago.”I know. The article didn’t care about that. Neither did the people commenting underneath it. They had already decided what happened. So she was cheating before the divorce? Ryan was right. She planned this. She wanted Damian’s money.I scrolled once. I shouldn’t have. There was another photograph. Then another. Different days.Di

Damian’s last words followed me into the bedroom.Ryan has started talking.I stood by the window with my arms folded across my chest, staring down at the city while Damian remained behind me. The streets below were alive with movement, headlights sliding between buildings, people rushing home, couples sitting in restaurants, living ordinary lives.Mine had stopped being ordinary a long time ago.My phone vibrated. Then again. I looked at the screen.Twelve notifications. I frowned and opened the first one. A photograph filled the screen. Ryan called before the sound of Damian’s footsteps had faded from the hallway.I stared at his name glowing across my screen, my pulse still unsettled from everything that had happened tonight. I had just told Damian I thought I was falling in love with him, and now the man who had spent four years teaching me what betrayal felt like was calling as if he still had the right to reach into my life whenever he pleased. I almost let it ring. Then I answered. What do you want, Ryan?”For a few seconds, he said nothing.I could hear his breathing, slow and deliberate, as though he was choosing every word before letting it out. You sound happy. My fingers tightened around the phone. I was. A quiet laugh came through the speaker. Was?I glanced toward Damian. He had stopped near the bar, his attention fixed on me. He didn’t ask who was calling. He already knew. I don’t have time for this.”You always say that when you’re angry with me. No. I say it now because I don’t want to talk to you.His vo

Then he sat across from me.No questions. No instructions. Just silence.I wrapped both hands around the glass. My mind kept returning to Ryan’s face in that courtroom. The shock when he saw Damian beside me.The way his confidence disappeared. The way he’d looked at me afterward, as if he couldn’t understand how the woman he’d left crying had walked into that courtroom with her head held high.I keep thinking I should be crying, I said.Damian leaned back.
