CHAPTER 9: WHAT SHE LEFT BEHIND

Xavier was already moving, the guard trailing behind him barking orders into a radio, and I found myself running to keep pace, my bare feet slapping against marble floors I still did not know the layout of.

"Seal every exit," Xavier snapped as we reached the private elevator. "Nobody leaves this building without being searched, staff included."

"She's already gone," the guard said. "Her car cleared the north gate eleven minutes ago."

"Then find out where it's headed." Xavier's charm had vanished completely, replaced by something cold and efficient that made him look, for the first time since I had met him, like a man who genuinely ran strategy for a war pack. "Get Ryder, now."

The elevator doors opened, leading to the lobby, and Damian was already there, still in the shirt he had worn to say goodnight to me hours ago, his face carved from stone as he listened to a second guard giving a rapid, clipped report.

"Helena." His eyes found me first, sharp with something that looked almost like relief before it hardened back into focus. "Xavier said you found something."

"Financial fraud," Xavier said, handing over the stack of documents. "Falsified vendor records and inflated invoices, all approved under Mara's signature, going back at least four months. Helena found the discrepancy this afternoon. Mara knew she'd been caught the moment Helena walked out of that meeting."

Damian's jaw tightened as he flipped through the pages, the same cold calculation crossing his face that I had seen on Xavier's minutes before. "Four months," he repeated. "That's not a woman panicking and making a mistake. That's a woman being careful for a long time and finally getting unlucky."

"Or careless," I said. "She didn't expect anyone to look. Least of all me."

His eyes lifted to mine, something unreadable moving behind them, and for a moment it was not fraud or fear or family secrets between us, just the strange, sharp fact of me standing in his lobby at midnight having uncovered something his entire household had missed. "You did this in a week," he said quietly.

"I had nothing better to do than pay attention," I said, echoing what I had told Xavier, though it felt different saying it to him.

Kade came jogging in from a side hallway, hair disheveled like he had been pulled up straight from his sleep, Ryder a step behind him, already dressed and alert as if he had never been asleep at all.

"Someone wants to tell me why the whole house is on a lockdown," Kade said, then caught sight of my face and the papers in Damian's hands. "Okay, not a drill then."

"Mara ran," Ryder said before anyone else could answer, his dark eyes scanning the room with the same careful precision he seemed to bring to everything. "Which means she has somewhere to run to. People who work alone don't disappear this cleanly in eleven minutes. She had a plan already in place before tonight."

"Which means she wasn't acting alone," I said slowly, the thought forming in my mind as I spoke it. "Someone helped her prepare for exactly this. Someone who knew she might get caught eventually and wanted her ready to disappear the second it happened."

The room went quiet at that, five sets of eyes settling on the same unspoken question none of us wanted to say out loud first.

"Track her car," Damian finally said, handing the papers to Ryder. "I want to know where she was headed and who she called in the last twenty-four hours. Xavier, pull every vendor record tied to these invoices. If she's been funneling pack resources somewhere, I want to know exactly where they've been going and for how long."

"On it," Xavier said, already moving.

"And Helena." Damian's eyes found mine again, softer than I expected, though his voice stayed even and controlled. "Thank you," he said to me.

"Don't thank me yet," I said. "We still don't know what she was hiding, or who she was hiding it for."

We do not have a long time to waste. Ryder had barely finished dividing the household guards into search teams when a second call came through to one of the men stationed near the garage. Word spread through the lobby fast, murmured from one guard to another, until Xavier finally turned to relay it to the rest of us.

"They found her car," he said. "Abandoned on the West Side Highway, hazards still blinking. No sign of forced entry, no blood, nothing to suggest she was taken against her will."

"She just left it there," Kade said, frowning. "In the middle of the highway?"

"Pulled onto the shoulder, actually. Deliberate." Xavier's expression had gone sharp and calculating again. "Which means somebody picked her up. A clean, planned exit."

A phone rang somewhere in the room, sharp and sudden in the tense quiet moment, and Ryder answered it fast, his expression shifting from alert to grim within seconds. He lowered the phone slowly, his eyes finding Damian's across the room.

"That was the team at the car," he said. "They found something else. A note, left on the passenger seat."

"For who?" Damian asked.

"It doesn't say." Ryder's dark eyes moved to me for a fraction of a second, careful and unreadable, before returning to Damian. "No name on it. Just a few lines."

"Read it," Damian said.

Ryder hesitated a moment longer than felt necessary before he spoke again, his voice low and even. "It says, tell them I did what I was told, and nothing more than that. If they come looking for answers, they won't like where the questions lead."

The room went very quiet.

"That's not a confession," Xavier said slowly. "That's a warning."

"To us," Kade said, "or to whoever sent her?"

Nobody answered that. Nobody could.

I stood there in the middle of a lobby full of powerful men who had no idea what to do with a note that said everything and nothing at once, and felt, for the first time since I had walked into this house, that whatever Mara had been hiding behind those falsified numbers was only the smallest visible edge of something far bigger, patient, and already watching all of us far more closely than any of us had realized.

Damian folded the note once, carefully, like handling it wrong might set something off. "Seal the estate," he said. "Nobody in or out until we know exactly who helped her disappear this cleanly."

It was Ryder's phone that rang again only some minutes later, cutting through the tense quiet of the lobby, and this time, when he answered it, his face drained of color before he had even said a word.

"That was the security at the front gate," he said, lowering the phone slowly. "Someone just tried to breach the eastern perimeter fence. Armed with multiple hostilities."

Damian was already on his feet instantly. "How many?" He asked.

Ryder's dark eyes lifted, grim and certain. "Enough," he said, "whoever helped Mara disappear tonight isn't finished with this house yet."

Ryder took the first watch outside my door, exactly as Damian had promised, and by the third night of it, I had stopped feeling strange about finding him there each time I woke, a steady, quiet presence that made the house feel less like it was holding its breath around me."You don't have to keep doing this," I told him one morning, after I found him still awake despite the early hour, with an unread book opened mostly on his lap."I know." He said, closing the book, unbothered. "But I would rather be here than sleeping and wondering if I made the wrong choice."I sat down across from him, restless in a way I could not quite name. "Ryder, I need to go see Felix."Immediately, something careful crossed his expression. "Why now?""Because he promised me answers, the night his own pack turned on him," I said. "Weeks ago, he said he would tell me everything once we were somewhere safer than his own bedroom. So I let it go because there was always something else happening. And there isn't

When I arrived, I met Cassius waiting in his private study, with the door already open, and no guards stationed outside the way there usually were. His composure was intact, as it always was, though something behind his eyes sat heavier than I had ever seen from him before."Close the door," he said quietly. And I did, with my heart pounding, unsure of what to expect after everything Ryder had refused to explain on the way here."Sit, please," he said.So I sat across from him, waiting, and for a long moment he said nothing at all, choosing his words with the same careful precision he usually brought to every council session."I am not going to tell you what you want to hear," he finally said. "And I want to be clear about that before I say anything else. I do not have proof of anything. But I have a suspicion, both old and unresolved, that I have carried far too long.""Then why did you call me here?" I asked."Because of what I saw in the garden this morning," he said. "The symbol,

  • Married To My Enemy's Pack    CHAPTER 68: WHAT NOBODY WOULD SAY

Not long after the garden carving was found, Cassius arrived after being summoned from wherever he had been that morning, and the moment he saw it, something in his composed expression tightened, like old fear surfacing plainly and unguarded for just a heartbeat before he smoothed it carefully away again."You recognize this," I said quietly, watching him."I have seen symbols like it," he said, too fast and too practiced. "Though it is not uncommon among old bloodlines, it could mean any number of things.""But that is not what your face said a moment ago.""You should be careful," he said, his voice sharpening, "about deciding what an old man's face means before he has explained it himself."Then he turned to Damian instead, closing the subject as firmly as shutting a door. "Double the perimeter watch, and I want a full report on every hire this household has made in the last year, both staff and contractors.""Father," Damian's voice carried an edge of frustration. "If you know som

I opened the door to find Ryder already dressed, with tension written plainly all over his face, and I did not bother asking questions before following him downstairs through the quiet halls toward the east side of the estate."What happened?" I finally asked, once we were far enough away from Kayla's room, making sure that she could not overhear us."A guard found something during the early rotation," Ryder said. "Near the garden wall, and I want you to see it before word spreads out through the household."We arrived at the garden as the sun was still climbing, pale light stretching long shadows across the grass, and Ryder led me toward the far wall where two guards stood watch over something on the ground.Turned out to be the same symbol which I had come to dread, carved into the soft earth, deep enough that no wind or rain had disturbed it overnight, with a crescent moon wrapped in thorned vines, and this one is larger than any of the ones I had seen before, easily three feet acr

Three nights later, I found myself back in the small, dusty study, in the same one where I had first found the shipping ledger, being unable to stay away any longer despite everything else pressing on my mind. This time, the house was fully asleep, with no footsteps in the hall, and there was no careful voice catching me at the door.I checked through what remained of the shelves methodically, my hands steadier now than they had been the first time I had done this. It took me months of practice to get exactly what to look for and what to ignore. That night, I found nothing new. And eventually, I sat back on my heels, frustrated, and let myself think, really thinking, about everything that had brought me to this exact spot.Silver Moon, A pack burned to nothing eighteen years ago. A shipping consignment that left Kingston territory two nights before the fire. A Kingston name on an old Ashwood guest list from the same week.Though none of it was proof, not on its own, but stacked togeth

I gripped Damian's hand tightly without meaning to, as the stirring in my chest started growing stronger with every second as the moon climbed higher, my whole body suddenly humming with something I had no name for."You're trembling," Damian said, quietly close to my ear. "If it is too much? We can go back in.""No, I don't want to go," I whispered. "I feel like something is happening to me which I do not understand."Then I looked around us and saw that pack members were beginning to shift, with their clothes discarding quickly and without ceremony, wolves of every color bounding toward the open stretch of rooftop set aside for running, laughter and howls mixing altogether in the warm night air.Kayla stood beside me, watching with open wonder, and Kade had already stripped down and shifted into a sandy colored wolf, nudging playfully at Xavier's leg before he could finish removing his jacket.I did not notice the light on my body at first. It was Damian's sharp intake of breath th
